Wayne Gillespie
Ret. Teacher, 63

Wayne Gillespie of Newburgh, a retired teacher for Valley Central School District and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh. He was 63 years of age.
The son of the late Jesse and Marilla Cochrane Gillespie, he was born June 30, 1936, in Middletown.
Mr. Gillespie attended the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Mamakating Moose Club.
He is survived by a son, Scott Gillespie of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Kirstie Hodas of Barryville; a sister, Beverly Wechsler of Florida; three grandchildren; and two nieces.
A Service of Remembrance was held Tuesday at the White & Venuto Funeral Home in Newburgh with Pastor Marc Benton officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Arthur L. Burk
Ret. Laborer, 71

Arthur L. Burk of Loch Sheldrake, a 40-year area resident and a retired laborer who worked for various Sullivan County summer camps, died at Roscoe Community Nursing Home on Saturday, June 24, 2000. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Edward H. and Bertha Puff Burk, he was born July 29, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mr. Burk is survived by his wife, Barbara Julian Burk, of Roscoe; six sons, Robert and Ernest Roach and Arthur and Wallace Burk, all of Jeffersonville, Steven Roach of Bethel and Calvin Burk of North Carolina; three brothers, William, Kenneth and Edward Burk, all of Philadelphia, Pa; a sister, Marion Robinson of Kentucky; 17 grandchildren; and 2 and one-half great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home on Wednesday with the Rev. Robert C. Nadelen officiating.
Burial was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery in Hurleyville.

Elizabeth Hirth
Homemaker, 81

Elizabeth "Betty" Hirth, a 50-year resident of Smallwood and a homemaker, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Simco Waslavik, she was born February 9, 1919, in New York City. She was the widow of John S. Hirth who died in 1977.
Mrs. Hirth was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Mongaup Valley.
She is survived by a son, John S. Hirth of Harriman; a daughter, Barbara Panos of Smallwood; and four grandchildren, Elisa Hirth, John Panos, Christine Panos and Michael Panos. She was predeceased by two sisters.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.
Funeral arrangements were made by Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.

Martin E. Schmitz, 62

Martin Ernest "Bummy" Schmitz of Hurleyville, a lifetime area resident, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 62 years of age.
The son of the late Carl and Florence Conklin Schmitz, he was born April 24, 1938, in Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta Schmitz, at home; a son, Kevin Martin Schmitz of Livingston Manor; four daughters, Tarri-Lou Bailey of Grahamsville, Lisa Kearney of Tampa, Fla., Barbara Rooney of Monticello and Wanda Skiba of Harris; a brother, Larry Schmitz of Woodbourne; a sister, Hilda Bogursky of Glen Wild; 18 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Tamok.
Services were held Wednesday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Robert C. Nadelen officiating.
Burial was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery in Hurleyville.

Mary W. Kleinman
Homemaker, 72

Mary Wilma Kleinman of Liberty, a 54-year area resident and a homemaker, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at her home. She was 72 years of age.
The daughter of the late Sidney and Alice Glazer Levine, she was born January 20, 1928.
In a family statement, it was said, "She will always be remembered for her strength, her kindness, generosity and her loving devotion to her husband and family."
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Abraham Kleinman, at home; five children, Sherri Huntzinger and her companion, Jack Gaines, of Newburgh, JoAnn Slaver of Liberty and her husband, John Slaver, Wendy Rudder of Gardiner and her husband, Ed Rudder, Seth Kleinman and Mark Kleinman and his wife, Marian, all of Liberty; a brother, Edward Levine of West Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, Betty Lain of Philadelphia, Pa., and Dorothy Rosenblum of Albany; and five grandchildren, Zoe and Kara Huntzinger, Erin Slaver and Daniel and Aaron Rudder.
Services were held Wednesday at Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Burial was made in the Hysana Road Cemetery.

Bernice Scheffel
Ret. Tech Assoc., 92

Bernice Scheffel of Haverstraw, a retired technical associate for NYSEG in Liberty, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in the Nyack Hospital. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Stephen and Lillie Mae Schaeffer Rapalje, she was born July 2, 1907, in Walden. She was the widow of Paul Scheffel.
Mrs. Scheffel was a member of the First Reformed Church in Walden and the Montgomery Grange.
She is survived by cousins, Louise Jakuba of Hopewell Junction, David Scott of Walden, Jeanette Brown of Sidney and Betty Bevier of Newburgh.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Donovan Funeral Home in Goshen with the Rev. John Rottenberg officiating.
Burial will be made in the Wallkill Valley Cemetery in Walden.

Clarence Bradley
Ret. Hwy. Supt., 90

Clarence Bradley of Barryville, a retired highway superintendent for the Town of Highland and a lifetime area resident, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at the Julia Ribaudo Nursing Home in Lake Ariel, Pa. He was 90 years of age.
The son of the late Atwell and Helen Heinekamp Bradley, he was born December 17, 1909, in Yulan. He was the widower of Jessie Kerr Bradley who died in 1985.
A US Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Eldred American Legion and the Yulan Rod & Gun Club.
He is survived by a nephew, Robert Nelson of Barryville.
There were no services.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville.

Margaret Foley
Homemaker, 67

Margaret Foley of Livingston Manor, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at her home. She was 67 years of age.
The daughter of the late Michael and Anna Yenchi Fitz, she was born May 19, 1933, in Newark, N.J.
Mrs. Foley is survived by her husband, Bernard "Bud" Foley, at home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sherri Foley of Blairstown, N.J., Michael Foley of Liberty and Steven Foley of Denville, N.J;; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty Ann and James Deuel of Suffolk, Va., Donna Foley of Linden, N.J., and Patricia and John Settembrino of Bridgewater, N.J.; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Evelyn Fitz of Linden, N.J.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Irene and Edward Dlugosz of Old Bridge, N.J., and Dorothy Wenk and Theresa Fitz, both of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Church in Livingston Manor.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Roger C. TerBush
Ret. Carpenter, 81

Roger C. TerBush of Ulster Heights, a 52-year member of Local #19 Carpenters Union and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the Ellenville Community Hospital. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Nina Cross TerBush, he was born May 19, 1919 in Sundown.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Central Europe and the Rhineland, receiving the WWII Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, the EAME Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. TerBush was a member of the Cook-Taylor Post #111, American Legion, in Ellenville.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Roberts TerBush, at home; a son, Roger TerBush of Grahamsville; a daughter, Randi L. Miller of Spring Glen; a sister, Esther Depuy of Westport; three grandchildren, Allison Simpson, Kevin TerBush and Heather Miller; a great-grandson, Gavin Simpson; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Cook-Taylor Post #111 American Legion, Route 209, Ellenville, with the Rev. Robert Hoag officiating.
Burial will be made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.

Robert Buonsignore
Ret. Phone Installer, 55

Robert S. Buonsignore of Pine Bush, a retired phone installer and repairman for NYNEX in Ellenville and a 23-year area resident, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 55 years of age.
The son of Mary Yanacek Buonsignore and the late William Buonsignore, he was born October 9, 1944, in New York City.
Mr. Buonsignore was a Vietnam War veteran.
He is survived by his mother of Staten Island; his wife, Gloria Torrellas Buonsignore, at home; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Karen Galdanes of Bloomingburg, Michael and Mami Buonsignore of Circleville, and David Buonsignore and Anthony Buonsignore, both of Pine Bush; a daughter, Maria Galdanes of Middletown; his twin sister, Carol O'Keefe of Staten Island; five grandchildren, Brittney, Cassie, Michael, Jeffery and David; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home in Pine Bush.
Burial will be made in the New Prospect Cemetery in Pine Bush.

Freddie Lee Strong
Presser, 53

Freddie Lee "Foxy" Strong of Monticello, a presser for Dr. Clean and Ellery's Dry Cleaning in Monticello and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his home. He was 53 years of age.
The son of Willie Mae Armstead Strong and the late Joe Horace Strong, he was born January 27, 1947, in Fairhope, Ala.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea from 1966 to 1968.
Mr. Strong is survived by his mother of Monticello; a son, Raheem Strong of Monticello; four brothers, Matthew Eric Strong of Monticello, Eddie Lee Strong of the Netherlands, Joseph Laverne Strong of Boone, N.C., and Anthony Thomas Williams of Georgia; a sister, Lela Christine Houston of Plainsboro, N.J.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lola Armstead.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Road, Monticello, with the Rev. Mervin Armstead, brother-in-law of Freddie, officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Margaret Montag
Homemaker, 83

Margaret M. Montag of Liberty, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, formerly of Livingston Manor, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late John William and Pearl Elizabeth Little Noll, she was born August 7, 1916, in Mt. Vernon. She was the widow of Rudolf Montag.
Mrs. Montag was a member of the Beaverkill United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Montag; a son, Rudolf C. Montag of France; a sister; three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother and a sister.
Services and burial were held in the Beaverkill Cemetery in Beaverkill with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor.

Dorothy H. Wright
Homemaker, 84

Dorothy H. Wright of Beach Lake, Pa., an 11-year area resident and a homemaker, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at her home. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of the late Lionel J. and Hazel Veitch Leonard, she was born March 2, 1916, in Newark, N.J.
Mrs. Wright is survived by her husband of 50 years, Arthur Wright, at home; a son, Arthur J. Wright, and a daughter, Karen Wright, both of Beach Lake, Pa.; a sister, Hazel C. Wilks, and two brothers, Lionel Leonard and Jack Leonard, all of Bloomfield, N.J.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Friday from 2-4 and 7-8 p.m.
Services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kristen Anderson officiating.
