Margaret R. Mitchell
Owner of Baker's, 77

Margaret R. "Marge" Mitchell of Barryville, the owner and operator of Baker's Tap Room in Barryville and a 36-year area resident, died Monday, December 19, 2000, at the Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, Pa. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Heinz Baker, she was born September 25, 1923, in Yonkers.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Yulan Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Benton Mitchell, at home; two children, Debra Nugent of Stamford, Conn., and Kenneth Mitchell of Longview, Tex.; and six grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Evan Greco officiating.
Interment will be made in Montoza Cemetery in Barryville.

Rose S. Nappi
Homemaker

Rose Scarvalone Nappi of Monticello died Monday, December 18, 2000.
A member of St. Peter's R.C. Church in Liberty, she was the widow of Louis Nappi, who died in 1985.
Mrs. Nappi is survived by three sons, Vincent Nappi of Bushville, Anthony R. Nappi of Dumont, N.J., and Richard Nappi of Yardley, Pa,; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Dumont, N.J.
Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery.

Carrie O'Bryant
Homemaker, 91

Carrie O'Bryant of Monticello, a more than 60-year area resident, died Sunday, December 17, 2000, at the Walnut Mountain Care Center where she had resided the past six months. She was 91 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Lillie Clemons, she was born May 15, 1909, in Harrelsville, N.C. She was the widow of Leroy O'Bryant.
Mrs. O'Bryant was a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello and active until illness curtailed her activities. She was active in the community with her heart and her home was opened to many needing comfort and assistance.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Monticello with the Rev. James Matthews officiating.
Burial was made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

Sam Tomkin, 88
Ret. Owner Beverage Co.

Sam Tomkin of Wurtsboro and Palm Desert, Calif., the owner/operator of the Regal Beverage Company in Middletown until 1969 and a 65-year resident of Middletown, died Sunday, December 17, 2000, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 88 years of age.
The son of the late Mayer and Kate Rosenthal Tomkin, he was born December 23, 1911, in Kiev, Russia.
Mr. Tomkin was a member of Temple Sinai, the Lions Club and Hoffman Masonic Lodge, all in Middletown.
He is survived by his second wife, Martha Axelrod Tomkin, at home; two children from his first marriage, Susan Tomkin of New York City and Steven Tomkin and his wife, Sue, of Tryon, N.C.; three sisters, Mimi Losch of Van Nuys, Calif., Henrietta Levine of Rochester and Natalie Sosinsky of New York City; two step-children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Lori Openden of Los Angeles, Calif., and Barry and Susie Openden of Oceanside; seven grandchildren, Christopher Tomkin and Danny, Jamie, Yussi, Yona, Dahlia and Adina Openden; a great-granddaughter, Esti Openden; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at Temple Sinai in Middletown with Rabbi Joel Schwab officiating.
Interment was made in Temple Sinai Cemetery in Circleville.

Roberta Buchalter
Ret. Clerk, 76

Roberta Buchalter of Loch Sheldrake, a retired clerk for the Bronx Psychiatric Center and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harry and Mary Landy Shapiro, she was born September 21, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Buchalter, and a son, Philip Buchalter, both at home; two sisters, Judith Kogon of Loch Sheldrake and Vivian Shapiro of Los Angeles, Calif.; a niece, Susan Kogon of the Bronx; and two nephews, Stewart Kogon of the Bronx and Marc Kogon of Loch Sheldrake. She was predeceased by a son, Michael.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Brotherhood Cemetery, Thompsonville Road, Monticello, with Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Doris J. Messina
Homemaker, 67

Doris J. Messina of Ellenville, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at her home. She was 67 years of age.
The daughter of the late Curtis and Anna Steffens Davis, she was born August 4, `1933, in Milanville, Pa. She was the widow of Frank Messina who died in 1993.
She is survived by a son, and daughter-in-law, Michael and Monique Messina of Narrowsburg; two sisters, Rose Sheppard of Lake Huntington and Shirley Utegg and her husband, Harold of Narrowsburg; a brother, Elwin "Bucky" Davis and his wife, Claudia of Milanville, Pa. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Davis, and two sisters, Marie Reeves and Marjorie Davis.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Graveside services and burial of the cremains will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, in Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating.

Helen M. Baker
Retired Clerk, 88

Helen M. Baker of Bethel, a clerk at the former Victory Store in Jeffersonville and a former resident of Youngsville, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at the home of her son in Bethel. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Reinhold and Maria Hauser Schultz, she was born March 11, 1912, in the Bronx. She was the widow of Theron Baker.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Jacques Cousteau Society, the Steuben Society and the Smithsonian Institute.
She is survived by a son, Timothy Baker of Bethel; a daughter, Penelope Baker of Bethpage; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Theron Baker, and a brother, George Mueller.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday at the Melville Cemetery in Melville, L.I.

Douglas D. Garlick
Ret. Baker/Carpenter, 71

Douglas D. Garlick of Monticello, a retired baker and carpenter and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, December 17, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Robert and Madeleine Bonilla Garlick, he was born August 19, 1929, in Bristol, Conn.
Mr. Garlick was a veteran of the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze campaign stars.
He is survived by three daughters, Burdell Astras, Kathy Garlick and MaryLou Armstead, all of Monticello; two sisters, Kathleen and MaryLou, and a brother, Norman Garlick, all of Connecticut; and five grandchildren, Bryan, Alexandra and Georgios Astras and Kevin and Whitney Armstead, all of Monticello.
Services were private followed by burial in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Olga F. Kamens
Ret. Teacher, 83

Olga F. Kamens, a four-year resident of New Hartford, a 30-year teacher in Liberty Central School who retired in 1983, died Saturday, December 16, 2000, at the Presbyterian Home in Central New York State. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Morris and Ethel Sommer Frohlich, she was born August 6, 1917, in New York City. She was the widow of Richard Rosenbaum who died in 1970.
Mrs. Kamens was educated in New York City Schools and received her BA degree from New York University and her MA degree from Mount St. Mary's in Newburgh.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Kamens of Miami, Fla.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Alice Capazzi of Vernon, Conn., and Lois and Clarke Peterson of New Hartford; five grandchildren, Christie Capazzi, Timothy and his wife, Erin Capazzi, Jamie Capazzi, Debbie and her husband, Paul Durrence, and Becky Peterson; and a niece, Linda Herbert Endler.
Graveside services and burial were held Wednesday at the Congregation Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.

Rev. Harry Henrich, 72
Ret. Episcopal Minister

Rev. Harry S. Henrich of Callicoon, a retired Episcopal minister and social worker for Sullivan County and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Harold Martin and Edythe Sherman Nickerson Henrich, he was born June 20, 1928, in Jersey City, N.J.
A graduate of Philadelphia Divinity School, the University of Virginia School of Law and the University of Colorado, he was ordained an Episcopal priest on June 16, 1965. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of Holy Cross Church in Callicoon.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hicks Henrich, at home; and a son, Major Theodore Henrich, USAF, Fort Meade, Md. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Henrich.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with the Rev. Ignatius Smith, O.F.M., officiating.
Cremation will be made at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
