Leon Greenberg
Attorney, 74

Leon Greenberg of Grahamsville, a longtime area attorney and lifetime area resident, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late William and Sonia Baron Greenberg, he was born March 6, 1926, in Mountaindale.
Mr. Greenberg was a member of the Rotary and Lions Clubs. He was a past president and general manager of the Monticello Raceway at its inception. Over the years, he was involved in the development of many community projects, including Sullivan County Airport, Community General Hospital, Sullivan County Community College, the Tarry Brae Golf Course and Emerald Green. Mr. Greenburg was a past president of the Hebrew Day School in Monticello, a past member of the board of directors for St. Albert's Seminary in Middletown and was the recipient of numerous community awards.
In a family statement, it was said, "He loved Sullivan County and wanted to see it succeed. He did all he could to make that happen. His heart was here. He was passionate in whatever he undertook and fervent in his beliefs. He was a good man and generous in the best sense of the word."
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Brown Greenberg, at home; two sons, Hank Greenberg of Slingerlands and Andrew Greenberg of Tampa, Fla.; a step-son, Robert Yakin Jr. of Smallwood; two step-daughters, Helen Palmer of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Heather Yakin of Middletown; a sister, Ruth Stangler of Newburgh; a sister-in-law, Jean Greenberg of Monticello; five grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Brian, Shoshana and William; and two step-grandchildren, Joshua and Justin. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Isidore Greenberg.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating.
Burial was made in the Mountaindale Synagogue Cemetery in Glen Wild.

Esther Salzman
Ret. Salesperson, 83

Esther Salzman of Fallsburg, a retired salesperson at the Concord Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, in the Skilled Nursing Unit at Community General Hospital in Harris, where she had been a resident for the past four years. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Nathan and Gussie Hoffman Lifshitz, she was born April 3, 1917, in Lima, Ohio. She was the widow of Dr. Murray Salzman.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was an avid gardener, seamstress and loved playing tennis. Esther will be deeply missed by her family and friends whose lives she touched. She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity and love to all she came in contact with."
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Toby and David Sommers of Bethel; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Roz Salzman of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Neil and Gina Alexis Salzman of Hallandale, Fla.; a sister, Elsie Liff of Bethel; four grandchildren, Steven of Bethel, Marc and his wife, Allison, of Farmingdale, Steven and his wife, Susie, of Liberty, and Nathan of Milwaukee, Wisc.; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Anne of Farmingdale; a nephew, Brian Barnett and his wife, Rona, of New City; and a niece, Jane Liff of New York City. She was predeceased by a sister, Anna Lifshitz and a brother, Matthew Liff.
Graveside services and burial were held Wednesday at the Temple Beth El Cemetery in Bethel.

Wasyl Schorobura, 85
Ret. Construction Worker

Wasyl Schorobura of Ridgewood, a retired construction worker for Local 95, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at the Wartburg Lutheran Home. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Wasyl and Maria Schorobura, he was born September 15, 1921, in Ukraine.
He was a member of Demolition Workers Union, Local 95, and Holy Ghost Ukraine Church in Brooklyn.
Mr. Schorobura is survived by his wife of 49 years, Erna Schorobura; a daughter and son-in-law, Olga and George Price of Hurleyville; and five grandchildren, Christopher Carlson of Atlanta, Ga., Erica Carlson, at home; Penny Olivo of Swan Lake, Alan Price of Woodridge and Jennifer Nieman of Liberty.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, Main St., Woodbourne.

Manuel Oliver, 70
Ret. Businessman

Manuel Oliver of Middletown, the retired owner of a maintenance service in Rockland County and 20-year area resident, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Damian Oliver and Crucita Feliciano, he was born January 1, 1930, in Lares, Puerto Rico.
In a family statement, it was said, "Manuel was a great husband for 50 years of marriage. He was a great father and grandfather, who adored his three grandchildren."
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Otero Oliver, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Oliver of Bloomingburg; three grandchildren, Theresa, Daniel and Christopher; two nieces; and a nephew.
Services were held Thursday in the Community Church of Bloomingburg with the Rev. Betty A. Beach officiating.
Burial was made in the Bloomingburg Cemetery in Bloomingburg.

Linda L. Rodriguez

Linda Louise Rodriguez of South Fallsburg, a homemaker, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at her home. She was 48 years of age.
The daughter of the late Oscar Louis and Anna Klemm Alfredson, she was born November 5, 1952, in Bay Shore.
Mrs. Rodriguez is survived by her husband, Antonio Rodriguez, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Julio Rivera of South Fallsburg; a son, John Giambrone of Rochester; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2001, at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne with Pastor Dan Kantenwein officiating.

Emma S. Curtis, 96
Ret. Dress Designer

Emma Spielmann Curtis of Youngsville, a former model, dress designer and sales clerk for Gertz Department Store in New York City and a 10-year area resident, died Monday, December 25, 2000, in Wayne Woodland Manor in Waymart, Pa. She was 96 years of age.
The daughter of the late Henry and Anna Weiss Spielmann, she was born May 28, 1904, in Youngsville. She was the widow of Benjamin Curtis.
Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Community Reformed Church in Youngsville.
She is survived by a stepson, Charles Curtis of New York City; a sister, Louise Mackerodt of Manheim, Pa.; a brother, Frederick Spielmann of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Spielmann of Youngsville; five nieces; 10 nephews; and two dear friends, Patty Mill of Damascus, Pa., and Thomas Crowley of Toms River, N.J. She was predeceased by a nephew, George Behnke Jr.; two sisters, Agnes Behnke and May Vogel; and three brothers, Henry, Otto and Karl Spielmann.
Services were held Thursday at the Community Reformed Church of Youngsville with the Rev. Stuart Hunt officiating.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Interment of the cremains will be made in the spring in the Greenhill Cemetery in Youngsville.

Charles A. Greene, 81

Charles A. Greene of Liberty, a retired heavy equipment operator for the Town of Liberty and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Clarence and Roseanna Abplanalp Greene, he was born June 16, 1919, in Liberty.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Battle Stars. He was a member of the Clarence Hoyt Post No. 9217, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Liberty. Mr. Greene was also a member of the Grooville Free Methodist Church in Livingston Manor and a longtime member of the J.C. Young Hose Co. #1 of the Liberty Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cora M. Hamilton Greene, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. Jr. and Bonnie Greene of Berwick, Pa.; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Harry Keator of Liberty; a granddaughter, Andrea Greene Benko of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Franklin and Elizabeth McCormick.
A memorial service was held at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty on Thursday with the Rev. Donald Baker officiating.
Burial will be made in the spring in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Floyd Hall Jr., 49
GM Chemical Engr.

Floyd Hall Jr. of Monticello, a chemical engineer for General Motors and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 49 years of age.
The son of Pauline Houston Hall and the late Floyd Hall Sr., he was born February 8, 1951, in Bay Minette, Ala.
Mr. Hall attended St. Peter's Church in Monticello and St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Forestburgh. He was also a member of the Sullivan County Disabled.
A graduate of Monticello High School, where he served as Student Council president, Mr. Hall was on the wrestling and captain of the debate teams. He was a graduate of SUNY New Paltz and was the wrestling team captain and engineer.
He retired as a bio-chemical engineer for General Motors in Youngstown, Ohio, after being stricken with multiple sclerosis. He became a longtime standing member of the Sullivan County Multiple Sclerosis Support Group and will be missed by many.
Mr. Hall is survived by his mother of Monticello; a son, Shawn Wilcox of Bay Minette, Ala.; two brothers, Raymond Hall and Reginald "Pete" Hall, and four sisters, Pamela Hall Davis, Melba "Sissy" Hall Kimble, Shaunte Hall and Marquicha Hall, all of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Bernard A. Hall.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Church in Monticello.
Burial will be made in St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Forestburgh.

Effie E. Minarsky, 88

Effie E. Minarsky of South Fallsburg, a retired telephone operator and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edward and Blanche Countryman Teller, she was born March 17, 1912, in Monticello. She was the widow of Andrew Minarsky.
Mrs. Minarsky was a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Guild and the Tri-Valley AARP.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. A special lady who cared for others before herself."
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Eileen Minarsky of Grahamsville and Stanley and Barbara Minarsky of Arvada, Colo; three grandchildren, James E. Minarsky and his wife, Sheri, of Montrose, Pa., and Shane Minarsky and Shannon Irwin, both of Arvada, Colo; four great-grandchildren, Sadi and Taylor Minarsky, Josh Minarsky and Cheyenne Irwin; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were held Thursday at St. Andrew's Church in South Fallsburg with the Rev. Nina Hutchinson officiating.
Interment was made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.

Beatrice Pantel, 102
Ret. Resort Owner

Beatrice Pantel of South Fallsburg, a retired resort owner and resident of Century Village in West Palm Beach, Fla., died Wedesday, November 8, 2000. She was 102 years of age.
The daughter of the late Abraham J. Pantel, hotelier, and Mollie Pantel, she was born July 16, 1898 in Paterson, N.J.
Mrs. Pantel was the co-owner of Pancrest Lodge in South Fallsburg with her brother, the late William Pantel.
An active woman throughout her life, Mrs. Pantel was a member of various organizations including the Sullivan County Bunalow Owners Association, The Workmen's Circle Arbiter Ring, the Isaac Walton League and was a life member of the Fallsburg-Woodbourne Chapter of Hadassah. During her residency in Florida, she was the treasurer of her condominium association branch until age 99.
She is survived by a sister, Rose Schwartz of South Fallsburg; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William Pantel and Irving Pantel; and two sisters, Ray Swimmer and Sadie Resnick.
Services were private.
Memorial contributions may be made to any of the charitable endeavors in which Mrs. Pantel was a participant.

Sterling Clark, 79

Sterling Clark of Liberty died Friday, December 22, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late George and Martha Lasher Clark, he was born February 17, 1921, in Poughkeepsie.
He is survived by longtime friends, Jim Cashen of Hudson and Bill Rickard of Kingston.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, with the Rev. Robert Nadelen officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

Margaret Houghtaling
Ret. Nurses' Aide, 77

Margaret Houghtaling of Parksville, a retired nurses' aide and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Jenny Scott, she was born October 26, 1923, in Parksville. She was the widow of Nial D. Houghtaling, who died in 1999.
Mrs. Houghling had been a employee of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty for 26 years.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Gary Wood of Liberty; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Carol Houghtaling of Parksville; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty.
Burial will be private in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

Josephine M. Guzzo

Josephine M. Guzzo of Roscoe, a retired owner of the Fairway Inn in Roscoe and a 25-year area resident, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ralph and Nancy Spataro Grella, she was born May 19, 1927, in Queens.
Mrs. Guzzo was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of BPOE in Montvale, N.J., the Women of the Moose in St. James City, Fla., and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rockland Hose Co. #1 in Roscoe.
She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Guzzo, at home; two sons, Michael Guzzo of Las Vegas, Nev., and Philip Guzzo of Roscoe; three daughters, Stephanie Guzzo of Greensboro, N.C., Julie Streng of East Meadow and Giniene Mojica of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Grella of Brooklyn; two sisters, Elizabeth Grella of Ozone Park and Patricia Hulsmann of Deer Park; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the United Church of Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.

Margaret Nargang

Margaret Nargang of Obernburg, a homemaker and longtime area resident, died Thursday, December 28, 2000 at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital in Callicoon. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Christian and Anna Sorensen Sorgenfrei, she was born February 24, 1917, in Queens. She was the widow of John Nargang.
Mrs. Nargang was a member of the Fremont Center Community Church and the Delaware Senior Citizens in Callicoon.
She is survived by a cousin, William Fox of New Jersey and a niece, Carole Sipple of Mileses.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Saturday from 2-4.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. James O'Rourke officiating.
Burial will be made in the Fremont Center Cemetery.

Daisy Antoinette "Toni" LaBarr, a lifetime resident of Liberty until she moved to Holiday, Fla., in 1983, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at the Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla. She was 75 years of age.
The daughter of the late Henry C. III and Jennie Lippelt Johnson, she was born June 18, 1925, in Liberty.
Mrs. LaBarr was a retired court clerk for the Town of Liberty Court and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liberty.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, William D. LaBarr, of Holiday, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dane C. and Suzanne LaBarr of Tampa, Fla.; her step-father, Albert Campagna of Holiday, Fla.; a brother, Roe W. Johnson of Neversink; a sister, Jane Merkel of Holiday, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was made in Florida.

Robert R. Pinckney, 56

Robert Russell Pinckney of Grahamsville, the owner/operator of his own transportation company, died suddenly Friday, December 22, 2000, in Schenectady as the result of injuries suffered in a vehicular accident. He was 56 years of age.
The son of Ralph Pinckney and the late Grace Cypert Pinckney, he was born October 17, 1944, in Monticello.
A U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam War, he was stationed in France where he met his wife. He was a member of the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, the Sheep Hill Rod & Gun Club and the American Trap Shooters Association.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Therese Pinckney, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mitch Riback of the state of Florida and Nicole and Todd Mahnken of Grahamsville; his father of Parksville; three sisters, Susie Cole of Liberty, Barbara Villaueva and her husband, Albert, of California, and Melody Durso and her husband, Michael, of Ellenville; and two grandchildren, Cody and Matthew Riback. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Pinckney Jr.
Services were held Wednesday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
Burial was made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.

Herbert Silver
Ret. Cabinetmaker, 73

Herbert Silver of Bloomingburg, a retired cabinetmaker for ADF Designs in Middletown, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Jacob and Flora Garrison Silver, he was born October 8, 1927, in Middletown.
Mr. Silver was a US Army veteran of World War II. He was a 20-year member of the Bloomingburg Fire Company, a member of the Carpenters Local Union and loved wood crafts and making furniture. His family was his life and he was a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Maude Onley Silver, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Krys Swiat of Bullville and Barbara and Tim Benedict of Walden; five grandchildren, Kristin, Brian and K.C. Swiat and Rebecca and Carly Benedict; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Hannah "Connie" Aplerin.
A memorial gathering was held Saturday evening at the Morse Funeral Home in Middletown.
Cremation was made at the Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester.

Rose M. Zisser

Rose Morrison Zisser of Loch Sheldrake, a retired manager in the garment business in the Bronx, and an 8-year area resident, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at her home. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Carrozza Valentino, she was born October 1, 1910, in Manhattan. She was the widow of James Morrison who died in 1945 and Hyman Zisser who died in 1994.
She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Blazer of New Jersey and Carol Morrison of Loch Sheldrake; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held Tuesday at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx with Monsignor Patrick Boyle officiating.
Burial was made in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

Sigmund A. Berry, 83

Sigmund A. Berry, the retired owner and operator of Berry Funeral Home in Livingston Manor from 1962-1984, died Wednesday, December 13, 2000, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was 83 years of age.
The son of the late Vincent and Anne Fischer Berezowski, he was born May 1, 1917, in Newark, N.J. He was the widower of Mary Shamin Berry.
Mr. Berry was a member of the Livingston Manor Lodge #791, F.&A.M.; a charter member and first president of the Livingston Manor Lions Club; a member of Brandy Brook Hunting Club; and a trustee for the Orchard Street and Beaverkill cemeteries.
He is survived by a daughter, Annette Cunningham and her husband, James, of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Nellie Murphy of Forest Hills; two grandchildren, Nancy Rebstock of Davie, Fla., and James Cunningham Jr. of Lakeland, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Everett Rebstock, Garrett Rebstock and Jaclyn Rebstock.
Services were held in Florida.

Barbara J. Komatz

Barbara J. Komatz of Smallwood, a homemaker and a 15-year area resident, died at her home on Friday, December 22, 2000. She was 71 years of age.
The daughter of the late August and Mary Kehoe Biedenkapp, she was born July 31, 1929, in Engelwood, N.J.
Mrs. Komatz was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of White Lake.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Komatz, at home; her children and their spouses, John and Dorilda Komatz and Babsy and David Komatz, all of Monticello, and Jesse and Sharri Komatz of Bethel; a brother, Lennie Biedenkapp and his wife, Julie, of Salinas, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
A memorial service was held Saturday at the Reformed Presbyterian Church of White Lake.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.
