MONTICELLO March 9, 2001 In a meeting reconvened from last week, the Sullivan County Legislatures Public Works Committee spent more than an hour yesterday discussing and debating where to situate the proposed welcome center in the Town of Mamakating.
The two viable contenders a site off Route 17 West between Exits 111 and 112 near the Mamakating/ Thompson border, and a site off Exit 114 at the top of the Shawangunk Ridge above Wurtsboro were narrowed down to one yesterday.
Legislators Jodi Goodman, Bob Kunis, Leni Binder and Rodney Gaebel voted for the Exit 111/112 site, while Gordon MacKinnon and Rusty Pomeroy voted against it thus, that site was picked, though the official choice wont be made until the full legislature approves it at next Thursdays meeting.
The estimated cost to build a welcome center on that site is $4,471,000.
