MONTICELLO August 3, 2001 The deadline to pay off delinquent taxes has been extended.
Initially, payment for taxes due prior to 1999 was due Tuesday, July 31, but its now been moved to Tuesday, November 13.
The reason? County Treasurer Olga Parlow discovered a technical failure in the foreclosure process. Inadvertently, the petition of foreclosure was not filed in a timely manner, said county officials, so to play it safe, Parlow, County Attorney Ira Cohen, and the Sullivan County Legislature decided to extend the deadline by four months.
"This does not stop the tax process," Legislady Leni Binder commented. "Interest will still be accrued."
However, the Real Property Tax Auction scheduled for October 2 through October 5 at Sullivan County Community College has been cancelled, which means between 700 and 1,000 properties wont be auctioned off.
Legislators are considering whether to hold a spring and fall auction next year, or just one. The matter will be discussed further at the Real Property Committee meeting on Thursday, August 9.
