Harrison Allen Sr.
Maintenance Man, 57

Harrison Allen Sr. of Monticello, a maintenance worker for the Apollo Mall, a lifelong musician with the Allen Brothers Band and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 57 years of age.
The son of James P. Allen and the late Sally Jetson Allen, he was born May 5, 1943 in Fairhope, Ala.
A member of the Masonic Lodge, he was also a member of the Bethlehem Temple Church in Fairhope, Ala, until moving to Monticello.
Mr. Allen is survived by his father of Monticello; his companion, Annie McCoy, at home; two sons, Harrison Allen Jr. and Terry Hooks Allen, both of Monticello; two daughters, Jackie Allen Powell of Monticello and Cheryl Jackson of Los Angeles, Calif.; three brothers, Oswald Allen and Cecil Allen, both of Monticello and Elder Wyan Allen of Boston, Mass; three sisters, Virginia Smith, Annie Bolden and Leona Allen, all of Monticello; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Road, Monticello, with the Rev. Mervin Armstead officiating.
Burial will be made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Harriet K. Ahlberg
Ret. Bookkeeper, 81

Harriet K. Ahlberg of Lake Katrine, a retired bookkeeper for New Paltz Central Schools, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at her home in Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Walter A. and Frances Smith Kilmer, she was born July 9, 1919, in North Tarrytown.
Mrs. Ahlberg was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brannen Van Den Berg Post No. 8645, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the AARP and the United Methodist Church, all in New Paltz.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest B. Ahlberg, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine B. Ahlberg and Russell Bogie of Liberty; a brother, Alfrederick Kilmer of Spring Hill, Fla.; a sister, Edith Baker of Connecticut; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Jack Kilmer, and a sister, Minnie Barrett.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Copeland Funeral Home, 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Rolland French officiating.
Burial will be made in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery.

Paul J. Cawley
Ret. Teacher, 70

Paul J. Cawley of Liberty, a retired teacher for the Liberty Central School District and a 45-year area resident, died at his home on Saturday, December 30, 2000. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late John P. and Catherine Mc Andrew Cawley, he was born November 17, 1930, in Scranton, Pa.
He graduated from Dunmore High School. Leaving college to serve with the U.S. Army in the Korean War, he returned to East Stroudsburg University and earned a BA degree. He received a Master's Degree in Administration and Supervision from New York University.
His forty-year teaching career began in 1954 at the Liberty Elementary School, teaching mainly the sixth grade. He had also taught fifth grade and was head teacher at the White Sulphur Springs Elementary School. Mr. Cawley was treasurer of the Liberty Faculty Association. He also was a teachers' union representative, acted as an alternate delegate for the New York State United Teachers and later served as a liaison to the local association of retired teachers.
Mr. Cawley worked as an interpretive ranger for the U.S. Park Service at the Upper Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River. He was the first director at Lake Superior Park in the Town of Bethel and was also a director of the Volunteer Literacy Program at Sullivan Correctional Facility.
A member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Father Cronin Council #4768, the Liberty Elks Lodge No. 1545, Russell D. Sprague Post No. 109, American Legion, and the Clarence Hoyt Post No. 9217, Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Liberty, and the Retired Teachers Association of Sullivan County.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Celeste Radle Cawley, at home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Kay and Joseph Eckenrode of Lancaster, Pa., Patrice and Stewart Chester of Rock Hill and Bridget and Brian Bidonde of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Devon Chester and Madeline, Peter and John Eckenrode; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marietta and Joseph Forster of Fredericksburg, Va.; a nephew and two nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Anna Koenig
Ret. Secretary, 95

Anna Koenig of Callicoon, a retired secretary for Doubleday Book Publishing Co., died Friday, December 29, 2000, at the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Brookhaven. She was 95 years of age.
The daughter of the late George and Caroline Mueller Koenig, she was born November 29, 1905, in Brooklyn.
Miss Koenig was a member of Holy Cross Church, the Holy Cross Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America, all in Callicoon. She was a former member of the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a nephew, Harold Sandin of Callicoon; two nieces, Pauline Lorenz of Ridgewood, Queens, and Loretta Moore of Saugerties; and nine grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with Father Ignatius Smith, O.F.M., officiating.
Burial was made in Holy Cross Cemetery in Callicoon.

Thomas J. Haney
LPN, 45

Thomas J. Haney of Wappingers Falls, a licensed practical nurse, died January 2, 2001, in Wappingers Falls. He was 45 years of age.
The son of Theresa Regan Haney Calkin and the late George V. Haney, he was born December 7, 1955, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Haney was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, William Calkin of Youngsville; a brother, Robert Haney of Newburgh; two sisters, Deborah Hubbert of Honesdale, Pa., and Dee Moore of Jeffersonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville with Father Robert Nee, O.F.M., officiating.

Stacey A. Merklin
Homemaker, 46

Stacey Ann Merklin, a 20-year resident of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Baldwin Brothers Memorial Care Services in New Smyrna Beach. She was 46 years of age.
The daughter of the late John J. and Marion McCaffery "Skip" Knapp, she was born December 12, 1954, in Monticello and was Catholic by faith.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece and soon-to-be grandmother. She filled her family's lives with love. She loved family and instilled values, morals and most of all, happiness into the hearts of many. She loved cooking and family gatherings. She was the matriarch of our clan, always strong and always present. Stacey Ann Merklin will be greatly missed and treasured as a strong woman, wonderful sister, wife, mother and an inspiration to all. You will remain in our hearts for eternity. Love you always and forever, your baby."
She is survived by her husband of 23 years, James Merklin, at home; a daughter, Johna Rose; a son, Ryan James; a sister, Rose Knapp Traub; a sister-in-law, Tracy Merklin; two brothers-in-law, Arnold Traub and Tim Merklin; four nephews, Justin and Brandon Traub and Jordan and Kristopher Merklin; a future son-in-law, Mark Norman; and many loving aunts, cousins and friends.

Anthony J. Zuclich
Ret. Cook, 86

Anthony John Zuclich of Middletown, a retired cook at the Middletown Psychiatric Center, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. He was 86 years of age.
The son of the late Antonio and Maria Dundich Zuclich, he was born August 29, 1914, in Nercine, Italy. He was the widower of Grace Weden Zuclich who died February 23, 2000.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served during World War II.
Mr. Zuclich is survived by a son, John Zuclich, and a daughter, Mary Ann DellaPia, and five grandchildren, Jason, Eric and Andrew Zuclich and Jeremy and Leslie DellaPia, all of Middletown; a sister, Maria Bonich of Canada; a nephew, Fernando "Fred" Bonich of Monticello; and a niece, Maria Bonich of Canada.
Services were held Tuesday at the Morse Funeral Home in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Unionville Cemetery in Unionville.

Paul L. Tuttle of Livingston Manor, the owner and operator of T&R Construction in Livingston Manor and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 65 years of age.
The son of the late Leo R. and Ivabelle Hotchkin Tuttle, he was born September 7, 1935, in Livingston Manor.
Mr. Tuttle is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert P. and Sheri Tuttle and George D. Tuttle, and a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnne P. and Jeff Roberts, all of Livingston Manor; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Services were held Sunday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in the Orchard Street Cemetery in Livingston Manor in the spring.

Pauline Rose Ambra of Liberty, a retired laundry manager for the former Liberty Maimonides Hospital, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 97 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Mary Leskovsky Mraz, she was born December 27, 1903, in Czechoslovakia. She was the widow of the late Frank Ambra.
Mrs. Ambra was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Peter and Carolyn Ambra of Bowling Green, Mo., and John Peter and Stephanie Ambra of Shrewsbury, Mass; two daughters, Mary Agnes Fanning of Lowell, Mass., and Helen A. Stuart of Liberty; two sisters, Mary Lafko and Margaret Mraz of Buffalo; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Betty A. Calkin; a son-in-law, Frank Joseph Stuart; two sisters, Agnes and Anne Mraz; and a grandson, Michael Calkin.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Interment was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Hazel Hartz Raymond of Middletown, a homemaker, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at St. Teresa's Nursing Home in Middletown. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Lahm Hartz, she was born June 21, 1913, in Callicoon. She was the widow of George Raymond who died June 19, 1991.
Mrs. Raymond is survived by a son, Gene Raymond of Middletown; a sister, Madeline Wagner of Huguenot; a niece and a nephew.

James Clark
Ret. Plant Super, 76

James Clark of Liberty, a retired plant supervisor, formerly of Woodbourne, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late John and Catherine Windsor Clark, he was born July 1, 1924, in Moosic, Pa.
A U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Concerned Citizens of Hasbrouck.
He is survived by three children, Mary Downey of Staten Island, James Clark Jr. of Neversink and John Clark of Long Island; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Catherine Schlesinger of New Jersey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in a family plot in Pennsylvania.

M. Jane Powers
Ret. Librarian, 81

Margaret Jane Powers of Hankins, a librarian at the Delaware Free Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library in Callicoon and a 35-year area resident, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at the Julia Ribaudo Nursing Home in Lake Ariel, Pa. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas Francis and Katherine Votruba Powers, she was born September 7, 1919, in Chicago, Ill.
Miss Powers was a former librarian at St. Joseph's Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon. She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, the Delaware Free Library and a member and past Matron of St. Tammany Chapter No. 492, Order of the Eastern Star, all in Callicoon. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and her Master's degree from Columbia University.
She is survived by a brother, Thomas Edward Powers of Hankins; a nephew, Thomas Robert Powers of Hankins; a niece, Katherine Curtis of Damascus, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Walter Heller Sr.
Ret. Truck Driver, 62

Walter Heller Sr. of Modena, a retired truck driver for Keyco Motor Freight in Glen Cove and a longtime area resident, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh. He was 62 years of age.
The son of the late Edward and Amelia Guyer Heller, he was born April 6, 1938, in Jersey City, N.J.
Mr. Heller flew racing pigeons and belonged to various racing clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ferrara Heller, at home; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Warren and Dawn Heller of Wallkill, Walter Jr. and Carrie Heller of Gardiner, Timothy William and Laura Heller of Ulster Park, and Michael Heller of Gardiner; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Heller of Monticello and Christine Marie and Anthony McVeigh of New Jersey; two sisters; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Heller, a son, Walter Robert Heller, and nine brothers.

Matilda Schmidt of Cochecton, a homemaker, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at the Flushing Hospital in Flushing. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ceigersmidt, she was born October 5, 1910, in New York City. She was the widow of Frederick Schmidt who died in 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Allan Schmidt of Cochecton and Frederick Schmidt; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Fred Meyerer
Ret. Carpet Mech., 76

Fred Meyerer of Youngsville, a retired carpet mechanic, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late Jacob Frederick and Helen Weed Meyerer, he was born May 4, 1924, in Hackensack, N.J.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Woodcliff Lake, N.J., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8946.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ethel Gillis Meyerer, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Donna Meyerer of Laurel, Md., and James and Bonnie Meyerer of Jeffersonville; five grandchildren, Mark, Steven and Allison Meyerer of Laurel, Md., Christina Strong and Richard Meyerer, both of Jeffersonville; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Richard Meyerer Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty on Wednesday.

Joseph Carol, 74
Ret. Supt. of Schools

Joseph Carol, a seven-year resident of Lake Worth, Fla., and a retired superintendent of schools including Fallsburg, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at his home. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Samuel and Mollie Carol, he was born in Brooklyn. Mr. Carol received his Doctorate in Education from Syracuse University. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. An avid tennis player, Mr. Carol was a fine educator who felt that children came first. He retired in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta Palmer Carol, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Mark Carol and Dr. Andrea Carol of San Francisco, Calif., David Carol and Karen Franklin of Old Lyme, Conn., and Dr. Ross Carol and Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin of Northborough, Mass.; two sisters, Lillian Ornsten of Adventura, Fla., and Renee Becker of New Port Richey, Fla.; four grandchildren, Emily, Elliott, Hallie and Brenden Carol; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held in Albany December 28 followed by interment at the Beth Shalom Cemetery in Rottrerdam.

Ruth Cunningham
Ret. Lab Tech., 87

Ruth Cunningham of Nyack, a retired lab technician for Champion Paper (now International Paper) in Nyack, died Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Hackensack (N.J.) University Hospital. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Kraus Kutcher, she was born May 7, 1913, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Henry Cunningham.
She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Egan of Queens; three sisters, Mary Dermody of Sidney, Dorothy Meyer of Lake Huntington and Gertrude Martin of Pipersville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Barbara Whyard of Hillsdale, N.J., Donald Cunningham of Stony Point and Kevin Cunningham of Westchester; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Thomas Jones officiating.
Cremation was made at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Dr. Helen L. Kleiner,
Ret. Child Psychiatrist, 90

Dr. Helen L. Kleiner of Middletown, also known as Dr. Helen Metzger, a former supervising child psychiatrist at the Middletown Psychiatric Center, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late Henry H. and Martha Wilcox Metzger, she was born July 21, 1910, in Bayonne, N.J. She was the widow of Dr. Solomon Kleiner.
She graduated valedictorian of Bayonne High School and earned her BA at Barnard College in 1931. She graduated from Syracuse Medical School in 1936, one of two women in a class of 48. She interned at Middletown State Hospital, Jersey City Medical Center, Willard Parker Contagious Disease Hospital in New York City and was a resident at Buffalo Children's Hospital.
Following her marriage to Dr. Kleiner, clinical director of Middletown Psychiatric Center, she moved to Middletown to begin her private practice as a pediatrician and attending staff physician at Horton Memorial Hospital. She retired from practice in 1980.
Dr. Kleiner was active in her community and served as PTA president, University Club president, was a nursing school teacher, Homemaker's Board member and was a supporter of the arts. She also served in the American Psychiatric Association as president, secretary, legislative delegate and legislative representative of the West Hudson District and Area II Council. Dr. Kleiner enjoyed Broadway shows and the opera, was a regular bridge player, an avid gardener and a great cook.
She is survived by three children, David A. Kleiner of Bloomingburg, Gerald P. and his wife, Barbara Bonham Kleiner of Middletown, and Sally J. Kleiner of Reno, Nev.; four grandchildren, Gregory, Hollye and Jennifer Kleiner and Justin Neeley; a sister-in-law, Muriel Metzger of New Hampshire; and eight nieces and nephews.

Lester C. "Skip" Yeomans of Livingston Manor, a former employee for the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 65 years of age.
The son of the late Lester and Lillian Soules Yeomans, he was born December 15, 1935, in Monticello.
He is survived by his companion, Winnie Zimmermann, at home; a daughter, Tracy Gorr of Livingston Manor; a sister, Genevieve Albrecht and her husband, Carl, of Mongaup Valley; two brothers, John Yeomans and his wife, Barbara, of Monticello, and William Yeomans of Newburgh; two grandchildren, Kailee and Jason Gorr; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Muriel Cleveland.
A private memorial service will be held.

Lillian "Pat" Bogan of Woodbourne, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Lena Ballard Hendrickson, she was born August 25, 1913, in Mongaup Valley. She was the widow of Henry Bogan.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a wonderful and devoted mother and friend."
She is survived by a daughter, Mona Bogan of Woodbourne; many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Brunner, and a brother, William Hendrickson.
Friends may call at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, Main Street, Woodbourne, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne with Fr. Lynch officiating.
Interment will be made in the Hillside Cemetery in Woodbourne.
