Mabel D. S. Carden
Homemaker, 80

Mabel Daizel Short Carden of Woodridge, a 50-year area resident and a homemaker, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Isabelle McCreadie Gibson, she was born November 20, 1920, in Bearsden, Scotland. She was the widow of Capt. William Short and Raymond Carden.
Mrs. Carden served in the British Land Army during World War II and came to the United States in 1951. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed bowling for which she won many trophies. Mrs. Carden was an excellent cook and was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Gary Slater of Woodridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robina and Gary Fenster of River Edge, N.J., and Walker Valley, and Doris and Andres Castro of Ferndale; five grandchildren, Gregory and Christopher Castro, Deborah DeGraw, Kelly Lynn Fenster and William Short; three great-grandchildren, Braden DeGraw, Nicole Short and Adriana Short; and five sisters in Scotland. She was predeceased by a son, CPO Thomas Short of San Diego, Calif.
Services were held Saturday at the Liberty Free Methodist Church with Rev. David McCarthy officiating.
Private cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Emma J. Ross
Homemaker, 89

Emma J. Ross of Livingston Manor, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Lula Loyd Davenport, she was born April 13, 1912, in Livingston Manor. She was the widow of Walter Ross.
In a family statement, it was said, "Mom lived for all her children and grandchildren. We will miss her. We love you, Mom."
She is survived by four daughters, Hilda Edwards of Parksville and Emma Welch, Pauline Helms and Shirley Velez, all of Livingston Manor; two sisters, Juanita Martin of Middletown and Leona Smith of Liberty; 33 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth and Franklin Ross, two daughters, Viola Alsdorf and Juanita Meyers, and two sisters, Idella McRea and Loretta Slegona.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, with the Rev. Kathryn Loizeaux officiating.
Burial will be made in Orchard Street Cemetery in Livingston Manor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Livingston Manor, N.Y. 12758.

Stuart B. Decker
Ret. Hwy. Foreman, 75

Stuart B. Decker of Claryville, a retired highway foreman for the Ulster County Highway Department and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Bruce and Ada Decker, he was born March 24, 1926, in Neversink.
Mr. Decker was a charter and lifetime member of the Claryville Fire Department. He was a longtime farmer and agriculturalist.
Mr. Decker is survived by his companion, Ruth Cole; and several dear friends.
Friends may call Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Claryville Reformed Church.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. John Wall officiating.
Burial will be made in the Claryville Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Claryville Fire Department, Claryville, N.Y. 12725.

Jeffrey T. Brown
Custodian, 35

Jeffrey T. Brown of Livingston Manor, a custodian at Livingston Manor Central School and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, as the result of injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in the Town of Fallsburg. He was 35 years of age.
The son of the late Frank E. and Myrtha Witham Brown, he was born June 7, 1965, in Bennington, Vt.
Mr. Brown was president of the Livingston Manor Nonteaching Union; a member of the United Church of Roscoe and the Twin Village Golf Club, both in Roscoe.
He is survived by a brother, Frank E. Brown Jr. and his wife, Terry, of Charlotte, N.C.; a niece, Erica Brown; a nephew, Matthew Brown; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held Sunday at the United Church of Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery in Center Rutland, Vt.

Myrtha G. Brown
Ret. Teacher, 64

Myrtha G. Brown of Livingston Manor, a retired teacher at the Roscoe Central School and a 35-year area resident, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, as the result of injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in the Town of Fallsburg. She was 64 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas Connell and Hazel Witham, she was born November 27, 1936, in West Rutland, Vt. She was the widow of Frank E. Brown.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the United Church of Roscoe, the Happy Footers Square Dance Club in Youngsville, the New York State Teachers Union, Sullivan Chapter #298, Order of the Eastern Star, in Livingston Manor, and the Twin Village Golf Club in Roscoe.
A graduate of Castleton (Vt.) State College, she taught elementary education for over 30 years before her retirement from the Roscoe Central School.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frank E. Jr. and Terry Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Edwin Witham of Rutledge, Vt. and Arthur Witham of West Rutland, Vt.; five sisters, Patricia Tarabochi, Lee Romeo, and Lois Workman, all of Rutledge, Vt., Alta Johnston of Ira, Vt., and Josephine Clifford of West Yarmouth, Mass.; two grandchildren, Erica Brown and Matthew Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at the United Church of Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Burial was made in the Evergreen Cemetery in Center Rutland, Vt.

Alice Weinberger
Ret. Seamstress, 81

Alice Weinberger of Harris, a retired seamstress, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Sidney and Ethel Baker Marold, she was born November 25, 1919, in Pennsylvania. She was the widow of Melvin Bauernfeind and Frank Weinberger.
Mrs. Weinberger is survived by two daughters, Sandra Haas of Ferndale and Sharon Houghtaling of the State of Florida; two sons, Nial Bauernfeind of Ferndale and Frank Bauernfeind of North Branch; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
There were no services.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.

Sadie C. Calyer
Ret. RN, 89

Sadie Clarke Calyer of Cornwall, a registered nurse for the Cornwall Hospital and Orange County Visiting Nurse Service, and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Orange County Health Related Facility in Goshen. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Patrick Clarke and Marie O'Mara, she was born December 21, 1911, in Cornwall-on-Hudson. She was the widow of Morris F. Calyer.
A graduate of the Cornwall High School and the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, she was a member of St. Thomas of Canterbury R.C. Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
She is survived by three sons, M. Clarke Calyer of Chatham, Vincent J. Calyer and his wife, Irene, of Cornwall, and Mark A. Calyer of Liberty; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Ethel Rogers, Ann Shutts and Loretta Hannon.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas of Canterbury R.C. Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Burial was made in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Rose-Marie McDowell
Homemaker, 62

Rose-Marie R. McDowell of Wolf Lake near Rock Hill, and a 17-year resident of Vienna, Va., a homemaker, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 62 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ernest Robert Sr. and Dorothy Helen Culver Barnes, she was born August 21, 1938, in Middletown.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer J. McDowell of Vienna, Va., and Wolf Lake. She was predeceased by a daughter, Heather Lea McDowell.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.
Interment will be made in the Westbrookville Cemetery in Westbrookville.
