Bonnie Lee Stang
Teacher, 59

Bonnie Lee Stang of Liberty, a special education teacher for 15 years at Hopatcong Elementary School in New Jersey, a teacher at St. Peter's School in Liberty and more recently a first grade teacher at the Liberty Elementary School, died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at her home. She was 59 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frederick and Lucille Zimijewski Havener, she was born May 14, 1942, in Waltham, Mass.
Mrs. Stang was a member, deacon and former Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty and a former Girl Scout leader in Liberty. She was also a member of the Liberty Central School Faculty Association and the NYS Teachers Association.
In a family statement, it was said, "Bonnie was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a popular teacher and continued to be actively involved with her church and community each day as she dealt with the effects of ALS."
She is survived by her husband, George Stang, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Erica Stang of Babylon; a daughter, Christianna Stang of Liberty; and a granddaughter, Kaila Stang.
Friends may call at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, in Liberty from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty, South Main St., Liberty, with the Rev. Donna Lepsky officiating.
Burial will be made in Riverdale Cemetery, Pleasant Mount, Pa.

Eddie Byrd
Ret. Truck Driver, 70

Eddie Byrd of Swan Lake, a retired truck driver for the Gill Syrup Co. in Brooklyn, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, at the Castle Point Veterans Administration Medical Center after a short illness. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Daniel and Ophelia Green Byrd, he was born December 5, 1930, in New York City.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Louisa Jorge Byrd, at home; two sons, Anthony Byrd of Brooklyn and Eddie Byrd Jr. of Swan Lake; four daughters, Lisa Byrd of Brooklyn, Cathy Byrd of The Woodlands, Tex., Catherine Byrd of the Bronx and Elena Byrd McLeod of Swan Lake; two brothers, David Byrd of New Jersey and Thomas Byrd of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, Louise, Lakarri and Eddie Byrd III; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Bert, Harry and John Byrd.
Funeral services were held Monday evening at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.
Private cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Sylvia L. Laskey
Homemaker, 94

Sylvia Levenson Laskey, a former resident of Liberty, died Monday, July 30, 2001, in California, on her birthday. She was 94 years of age.
Born July 30, 1907, in New York City, she was the widow of Samuel J. Laskey, former Sullivan County auditor, who died in 1988 after 59 years of marriage.
The family moved to Liberty when she was two years old and her parents opened the Levenson Steam Laundry. Sylvia's sister and brother-in-law, Mollie and Ben Wattenberg, later operated the laundry. Upon Mr. Laskey's retirement in 1974, Sylvia and Sam moved to California to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Laskey and Gretchen Ordin; a daughter, Joan Elder; three grandchildren, Debbie Laskey, Jim Elder and Steve Elder; and a great-granddaughter, Samaya Elder.
Services and burial were held in California.

Sheldon Calman, 74
Ret. Food Shop Oper.

Sheldon Calman of Monticello, a retired operator of the Flying Saucer Coffee Shop at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello and a longtime area resident, died Friday, August 3, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Harry and Frances Calman, he was born July 20, 1927, in Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor DePace Calman, at home; two sons, Scott Calman and his wife, Lori, of Stony Point, and Robert Calman of Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Christine, Samantha, Daniel and Paige. He was predeceased by a brother, Lenord Calman.
Graveside services and burial were held Monday at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello with Father Robert Ginel officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

Henry C. Engert
Ret. Businessman, 87

Henry C. "Sonny" Engert of Callicoon, the retired proprietor of Engert's Appliances in Callicoon, and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at his home. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Henry and Mary Brandt Engert, he was born September 26, 1913, in Callicoon.
Mr. Engert was a past commissioner of the Callicoon Fire District, a reserve member of the Callicoon Volunteer Fire Department and served as a town councilman for the Town of Delaware for 13 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Stewart Engert, at home; two daughters, Judy Highhouse of Hortonville and Nancy Gross of Oceanside; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Freda Robisch of Callicoon. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Cross; a brother, Charles Engert and two sisters, Eleanor Engert and Marie Engert Enders.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the North Branch Methodist Cemetery in North Branch.

Theresa R. Hintze
Medical Biller, 60

Theresa R. Hintze of Monticello, a medical biller for Sullivan Internal Medical Group in Monticello and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at her home. She was 60 years of age.
The daughter of the late Michael and Mary Nicholl Howard, she was born October 13, 1940, in the Bronx. She was the widow of Daniel Gallagher and John Hawthorne.
Mrs. Hintze was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello and the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked for eight years in Community General Hospital and was one of the original members of the "We Care Committee." Mrs. Hintze also supported the American Indians in North Dakota.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Robert F. Hintze, at home; two sons, Daniel Gallagher and John Hawthorne and his wife, Michelle, all of Ithaca; a daughter and son-in-law, Leona and James Appenaver of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Stacey, J.J., Ryan and Jonathan; four nieces, Erica, Maura, Daria and Chaunda; a nephew, Kieren; and many cousins in the United States and Ireland. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Weidner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello with Father Robert Ginel officiating.
Private cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Building Fund, c/o St. Peter's Church, Broadway, Monticello, or to the Oncology Unit of Community General Hospital, Harris, N.Y. 12742.

Robert C. Mann
Truck Driver, 61

Robert C. Mann of Westbrookville, a truck driver for Velocity Express and West Point, a former owner of Kopy Kat Printing in Port Jervis, and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, August 3, 2001, at his home. He was 61 years of age.
The son of the late William and Wilhemia Weiler Mann, he was born June 27, 1940, in the Bronx.
Mr. Mann was a past Exalted Ruler of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #645 in Port Jervis and a past Pop Warner football coach in Port Jervis. He loved model trains and fishing.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was kind, giving and fun-loving. He loved the good times with family and friends. His passing leaves a great void in our lives."
He is survived by his wife, Carol Anne Mann, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Molly Mann of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Rico Arce of Sparrowbush; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Arlene Mann; three grandchildren, Michael and Michele Martin and Ashlie Wyman; several nieces and nephews; and a lot of friends whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Mann, who died in 1987.
Services were held Sunday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Rev. Robert Cassidy officiating.
Burial was made in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Middle Hope.

Milton Goldberg
Ret. Restaurateur

Milton Goldberg of Lake Worth, Fla., the former owner of Jack's Restaurant in Monticello, an icon of Kaplan's Restaurant during the heydays of Monticello, and a former 30-year Monticello resident, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home after a short illness.
A World War II veteran, he was awarded two Bronze Stars for heroism.
Mr. Goldberg is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Goldberg, of Lake Worth, Fla.; two children, Jay and Barbara, both of Florida; and a grandson, Joshua, a student at The University of Central Florida.
Services and burial were held Thursday at the Palm Beach Memorial Gardens in Lake Worth, Fla.

Heather Dollard
Student, 13

Heather Dollard of Rock Hill died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at her home. She was 13 years of age.
The daughter of John and Mary Dollard, she was born August 7, 1987, in Harris.
She is survived by her parents, a sister, Mary Kay Dollard, and two brothers, John E. and Ed Dollard, all at home; her maternal grandfather, Dick Smith of Bethel; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter's R.C. Church, Broadway, Monticello, with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Cremation will be private.
