Mary May Guier Barnes, 90

Mary May Guier Barnes of Narrowsburg, a 60-year area resident, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 90 years of age.
Daughter of the late Rev. Lester and Mrs. Clara Guier, she was born on December 16, 1910 in Gainesville. She was the widow of Marvin James Barnes.
She was a member and Sunday school instructor of the Beach Lake PA Free Methodist Church, a member of the Women’s Missionary Society and served on the Board of Stewards.
Survivors include three sons, Wendell J. and wife Betty of Beach Lake, PA, Howard L. and wife Cindy Sue of Narrowsburg, and Thomas G. and wife Deborah of Honesdale, PA; two sisters, Esther and husband Bernard Newman of Woodbridge VA, Ruth and husband Ralph Bansbach of Leesburg FL; one brother, David of Bellingham WA; fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, August 19 at 2 p.m. at the Beach Lake Free Methodist Church. Rev. Richard C. Gabriel officiated. Burial was in the Beach Lake Cemetery.

Beverly Merigliano Bernhardt, 46

Beverly M. Merigliano Bernhardt of Monticello, a lifelong resident of the area, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 46 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph J. Merigliano Jr. and Mae L. Nevin, she was born July 21, 1955 in Monticello.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Bernhardt; five brothers, Joseph, Michael, Robert and Thomas Merigliano and George Nevin; two sisters, Sandra Burke and Tammy Rennison, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny funeral home on Monday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m.
Burial was made in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Monticello.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Skilled Nursing Unit at Community General Hospital, Bushville Rd., Harris, NY 12742.

Madeline Hinkley
Homemaker, 88

Madeline Hinkley, a homemaker and lifetime area resident, died on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Community General Hospital in Callicoon. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of William and Sarah Cochrane Davis, she was born on May 22, 1913 in Cooks Falls. She was the widow of William Hinkley who died in 1973.
She was a member of the Parksville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Judith Gardner of White Sulphur Springs; a sister, Isabelle Forker of Port Jervis; 3 granddaughters, Robin Lewis of Jeffersonville, Amy Davis and Tara Gardner, both of White Sulphur Springs and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, August 18 and were officiated by Rev. Betty Beach.
She was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

Mary Agnes Ackerson
Ret. Food Service Supervisor, 83

Mary Agnes Davidson Ackerson, a retired Food Services Supervisor for the Pomona Health Complex, died on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. She had lived in Suffern all her life until moving to Delray Beach, FL about ten years ago. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of Anna and Wallace Davidson, she was born June 2, 1918. She was the widow of Arthur Ackerson, who died in July of 1999 after 62 years of marriage.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Suffern and Ascension Church in Boca Raton, FL.
She is survived by three sons, David of Port Jervis, Peter and his wife June of Cuddebackville, and John and his wife Liz of Tappan; one brother, Jack Davidson of Wolf Lake; three sisters, Florence Meres of Ormond Beach, FL, Nancy Mays of Wurtsboro and Helen Hickey of West Haverstraw. She is also survived by six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass was performed on Saturday, August 18 at Sacred Heart Church in Suffern.
The burial was in Airmont Cemetery, Airmont.

John J. Petrie
English Teacher, 73

John J. Petrie of Campbell Hall, an English teacher for Newburgh Central School District, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, in Arden Hill Hospital, Goshen. He was 73 years of age.
The son of John and Rosina Petrie, he was born April 4, 1928, in Grand Isle, VT. He was the widower of Ann Chaperone Petrie.
He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, and was active with thoroughbred horses.
Survivors include seven children, Stephan Petrie and his wife Roseann of Beacon, Michele Houman and her husband Eddie of Livingston Manor, Greg Petrie and his wife Margaret of Newburgh, Marianne Luby and her husband Paul of Charlotte, NC, Diane Petrie of Port Royal SC, Kathi Petrie of Campbell Hall and Renee Brestle and her husband Mark of Somers Point, NJ; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A prayer service was held on Saturday, August 18, at Donovan Funeral Home in Goshen.
Interment was made in Orange County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Goshen.

Wanda D. Fagan
Homemaker, 88

Wanda D. Fagan of Willowemoc, a homemaker and lifetime resident of the area, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of William H. and Delilia Wiest Decker, she was born March 5, 1913, in Willowemoc. She was the widow of Joseph Fagan.
Survivors include one sister, Jennie E. Decker of Willowemoc; one nephew, Robert D. Decker of Willowemoc; two nieces, Bonnie Hein of Poughquag and Nancy Tuccillo of Watertown; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 18 at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor.
Burial was made in Claryville Cemetery, Claryville.

Margaret Barnes
Ret. Bank Manager, 94

Margaret Barnes, a lifelong area resident and retired Citibank bank manager, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home, Roscoe. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Black Tempel, she was born November 10, 1906 in Callicoon.
Margaret was a communicant of Gate of Heaven Church, Roscoe.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Barnes at home; a stepson, Richard Barnes of Lake Worth, FL; a sister-in-law, Winifred Tempel of Roscoe; a nephew, James Tempel and his wife Betty of Scotchtown.
Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday at 10 a.m. in the Gate of Heaven Church in Roscoe. The Rev. Alfred Croke officiated.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gate of Heaven Church Building Fund.

Robert Kendall Jr.
Businessman, 79

Robert E. Kendall Jr. of Monticello, a self-employed businessman who specialized in pole line construction and a 54-year area resident, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late Robert E. and Rena E. Keach Kendall, he was born November 13, 1921, in Randolph, Vt.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a past commander of the Bailey-Richmond Post #9588, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of BPOE Lodge #1544, both in Monticello.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Flint Kendall, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Barbara Kendall of Billings, Mont., and Duane and Elizabeth Kendall of Monticello; a daughter and son-in-law, Dale Clukies and Gerald Goldman of Binghamton; six grandchildren, Roger Clukies, Robert W. Kendall, Mary E. Kendall, Kimberly Kendall, Michele Kendall and Amanda Husbands; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Roland Kendall.
Services were private.
Burial was made in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Randolph, Vt.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello.

Mildred Bargfrede
Homemaker, 73

Mildred Bargfrede of Youngsville, a homemaker and lifetime resident of the area, died Friday, August 17, 2001 at Community General Hospital, Harris. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of Frank J. and Helen Hemmer Eagin, she was born June 5, 1928 in Youngsville. She was the widow of John F. Bargfrede.
She was a member of the Youngsville Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary, and a member of the Community Reformed Church of Youngsville.
Survivors include three daughters, Elaine B. Flaxer and her husband Joel of Jane Lew, WV, Kathy B. Quinlass and her husband Michael of Youngsville and June B. Tegeler of Jeffersonville; four grandchildren, Daniel L. Flaxer of New Bern, NC, Jennifer Lynne and Kaitlyn Elaine Quinlass, both of Youngsville, and John William Tegeler of Jeffersonville; and one brother-in-law, Fred LeRoy of Youngsville.
She was predeceased by one sister, Dorothy LeRoy; one brother, Raymond F. Eagin; and one son-in-law, Thomas F. Tegeler.
Services were held yesterday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Entombment will be in the family mausoleum in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack.

William Nagoda, 72

William Nagoda of Monticello, a long time resident of the area, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 at Community General Hospital, Harris. He was 72 years of age.
Son of the late Frank and Mildred Comedina Nagoda, he was born August 2,1929 in Carbondale, PA.
He was a United States Army Veteran, serving from 1947 to 1948.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ann Marie Mohring Nagoda, at home; one son, Kevin Nagoda and his wife Joanne of Forestburgh; two sisters, Rose Weigand of Woodbourne and Eleanor Pryor of Klamatch Falls, OR; three grandchildren, Alexander, Amy and Andrew; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, James, and Rudy Nagoda; and two sisters, Mildred Kimble and Viola Seiwell.
Cremation will be in Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh.
Interment of his ashes will be held at the convenience of the family in the Rock Ridge Cemetery, Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 159 Green St., Kingston, NY 12401; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Irene Cummins
Ret. Secretary, 76

Irene Cummins of Welcome Lake, PA, a retired secretary for the North Bergen Board of Education in North Bergen, NJ, died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at home. Mrs. Cummins was a part-time resident of the area for 30 years and a full-time resident for the past 3 years.
The daughter of Adolf and Theresa Higgins Trostel, she was born on February 7, 1925 in New York City.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford, at home; three children, Glenn of Hollywood, FL, Kevin of Succasunna, NJ, and Karen Ondira of New York City; four grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 22 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Thomas Jones will officiate.
Interment will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg.
