Arthur F. Cherry
Ret. Civil Engr., 87

Arthur F. Cherry of Bowling Green, Va., a retired civil engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation and a former North Branch resident, died Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at the MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va.
He was born in New York City.
Mr. Cherry was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Fredericksburg, Va. He was an avid ham radio operator and a member of the Rappahannock Valley Radio Club, using the call sign, "KB4CKZ." He was also a model railroad enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hust Cherry, at home; a daughter, Dottie C. Hicks of Fredericksburg, Va.; a son, Doug Cherry of Spotsylvania, Va.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday in the chapel of the Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green, Va., with Bishop Brent Dewey officiating.
Burial was made in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling Green, Va.

Karen L. Staesser, 38
Meals on Wheels Wkr.

Karen L. Staesser of Liberty, an employee of Sullivan County Meals on Wheels Program, died Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at her home. She was 38 years of age.
The daughter of William R. and Tara Hanofee Staesser, she was born March 1, 1963, in Callicoon.
Miss Staesser was also a member of the Sullivan County Stamp Club.
She is survived by her parents and a brother, William V. Staesser, all of Livingston Manor; a sister, Tracey E. Staesser of Grahamsville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were private.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Edward L. Williams
Ret. Bus Driver, 85

Edward L. Williams of Marlboro, a retired bus driver for the Wappingers School District and Town of Newburgh Senior Center, died Friday, October 19, 2001, at his home. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Abram and Sarah Doxey Williams, he was born May 26, 1916, in Newburgh. He was the widower of Rose Williams.
Mr. Williams served in the Navy Seabees during World War II.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Edward Jr. and Claire Williams of Newburgh, Michael Williams of New Jersey, and Timothy and Yolanda Williams of Wappingers; four daughters, Nancy Gott and her companion, Juan Lucino of Livingston Manor, Patricia Myers and her husband, Billy, of Marlboro, Michelle Williams of Vails Gate and Debra Siltz and her companion, Anthony Schummel of Wallkill; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Williams; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John Williams.
Services were held Monday at the Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael McLymore officiating.
Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor.

Gladys Berberich
Retired Teacher, 93

Gladys Berberich of Liberty, a retired teacher for the Liberty Central Schools and a lifetime area resident, died Saturday, October 20, 2001, at the Roncalli Health Center in Willomantic, Conn. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles B. and Bertha M. Ward Muhlig, she was born March 18, 1908, in Liberty. She was the widow of Cyrus W. Blade and Herman Berberich.
After attending Delhi Teachers Training, she furthered her education at the State University of New Paltz.
Mrs. Berberich was a deaconess at the Liberty Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Sullivan Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe and lectured to groups about her travel experiences.
She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Hansen Cox of Columbia, Conn., with whom she lived for many years; a son and daughter-in-law, Ward and Sandra Blade of Neversink; two sisters-in-law, Bertha and Helen Muhlig, both of Liberty; nine grandchildren, Deborah Jones, Cynthia Krider, Donald B. Hansen, Glenn Hansen, Jonathan Hansen, Cort Blade, Melissa Slater, Heidi Hewlett and Amanda Blade; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Charles and Robert Muhlig, and a sister, Bertha May Muhlig.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Donna Lepsky officiating.
Interment was made in the family plot at the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

Charles R. Bulaga
Ret. Applications Engr., 68

Charles Raymond Bulaga, a 20-year Monticello resident, died Monday, October 15, 2001, at his home. He was 68 years of age.
Retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1979, after attaining the rank of Master Sergeant, he became an applications engineer for Cablevision Industries in Liberty, a position from which he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Garren St. Louis Bulaga, at home; a daughter, Jennifer Pfeister of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren, Eric and Kelly Pfeister.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Russel J. Garrison
Ret. Schrade Emply., 74

Russel James Garrison of Wurtsboro, a former Ellenville resident, a retired 32-year employee of Imperial Schrade and a 70-year area resident, died Friday, October 19, 2001, at the Ellenville Regional Hospital. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late George and Helen Morris Garrison, he was born April 13, 1927, in Warwick.
Mr. Garrison was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Miller Garrison, at home; a daughter, Karen Downey of Lindenville; a son, Marc Garrison and his wife, Toni, of Kendall; three grandchildren, Seth Downey of New York City, and Meagan and Tyler Garrison of Kendall; a great-grandson, Jacob Downey of New York City; two brothers, Robert Garrison of New Jersey and John Garrison of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Loucks Funeral Home, Route 209, Ellenville, with the Rev. Jay Vogelaar officiating.
Burial will be made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

John Mangabang
Laborer, 28

John Mangabang of Mountaindale, a laborer for Leisure Time Water, died Thursday, October 18, 2001. He was 28 years of age.
The son of John R. and Vicki Hatt Mangabang, he was born May 30, 1973, in Monticello.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Zukowitz Mangabang, and a son, Devin Mangabang, both at home; his mother and stepfather, Vicki and William Adams of Mountaindale; his father and stepmother, John and Cheryl Heckard Mangabang of Maryland; a brother, Daryl Mangabang of Mountaindale; two sisters, Jennifer Rivas and her husband, Carlos, of Kerhonkson, and Winter Mangabang of Loch Sheldrake; two step-sisters, Patricia McCumber and her husband, Dennis, of Tarrytown, and Brittany Roberts of Delaware; his maternal grandparents, Warren and Ramona Hatt of Mountaindale; his in-laws, Ed Zukowitz of Woodbourne and Joyce and Mark Oskroff of Woodbourne; three nieces, Tatana, Taylor and Chastity; three nephews, Kyle, Carlos, and Daniel; and several aunts and uncles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne with Fr. John Lynch officiating.
Cremation will be private.

Joseph S. Ronkese
Ret. Foreman, 81

Joseph Serofino Ronkese of New Hamburg, a 56-year area resident and a retired maintenance foreman of Carpenter Shop Texaco Research Center in Glenham from which he retired in 1982, died Friday, October 19, 2001, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He was 81 years of age.
The son of Guiseppe and Teresa Pesavento Ronkese, he was born November 12, 1919, in Cedar Cliff.
Mr. Ronkese was a member of St. Mary's Church and sang in the church choir. He was a member of Wappingers Assembly #770 Knights of Columbus and the New Hamburg Engine Co. #1 of which he was a past commissioner for 35 years. He was also a member of the Texaco Retirees Club.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U. S. Army in the North African and European campaigns. Mr. Ronkese also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and playing softball with the teams associated with Texaco and the New Hamburg Engine Co.
He is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Rose Camelio Ronkese, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph S. and MaryAnn Ronkese of Grahamsville; a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Joseph Larese of Cold Spring; four grandchildren, Christopher and Matthew Ronkese and Joseph and Jennifer Larese; two sisters, Rose DallVechia and Angelina Maduro, and two brothers, Albert and Bruno Ronkese, all of Marlboro; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Ronkese and a sister, Mary Baxter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls.
Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Wappingers Falls.

Walter M. Bloomer
Ret. Equip. Oper., 83

Walter M. Bloomer of Obernburg, a retired equipment operator and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at the Isabella Geriatric Center in Manhattan. He was 83 years of age.
The son of the late Walter and Mary Conroy Bloomer, he was born June 28, 1918, in Jersey City, N.J.
Mr. Bloomer was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army and was a retired employee of Carroll McCreary Steel Company on Long Island.
He is survived by two sons, Walter Bloomer Jr. of Lake Huntington and Ronald Bloomer of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; two stepsons, James Diamond of Jacksonville, Fla., and William Fegan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother; a sister; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty, from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Msgr. Edward Straub officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Russell W. Walters
Plumber, 31

Russell W. Walters of New Milford, N.J., a plumber, died Saturday, October 13, 2001, in Teaneck, N.J. He was 31 years of age.
The son of Peter and Carol Sue Zane Walters, he was born November 5, 1969, in Englewood, N.J.
A communicant of St. Mary's Church in Dumont, N.J., he was an avid fly fisherman, spending weekends in Roscoe where he loved to fish the many brooks and rivers, supplying his grandmother with trout.
He is survived by his mother of Park Ridge, N.J.; his father of Florida; a sister, Darcy Peters and a brother, Peter Walters Jr., both of Tucson, Ariz.; his grandmother, Dorothy Zane of Roscoe; and two nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Walters, who died in 1979.
The Rev. Theo Lynne Hoffman officiated at services.
Burial was held in the Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.

Anna D. Grundel
Owned Tax Service, 75

Anna D. Grundel of Glen Spey, an accountant and owner of Ann's Tax Service in Glen Spey and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 75 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frederick and Wilhelmina Strecker, she was born January 24, 1926, in Queens. She was the widow of Henry C. Grundel.
Mrs. Grundel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Pond Eddy, a former councilwoman for the Town of Lumberland and a member of the Town of Highland and Town of Lumberland Senior Citizens. She was an advocate for the Lumberland Seniors, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the New York State Fire Police and the Town of Lumberland Fire Police. She was at one time a correspondent for the Sullivan County Democrat and a former manager of the newspaper's Monticello office.
She is survived by a son, Mark Grundel, and his fianceé Sue, of Narrowsburg; a daughter, Doris Ann Grzesik of Utica; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Charles Kerns of North Merrick, L.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Burial will be made in the Glen Spey Cemetery in Glen Spey.

Matilda Rolle
Ret. Laundress, 84

Matilda Rolle, a 56-year resident of Monticello and a retired laundress for the Monticello Steam Laundry where she worked many years, died Monday, October 15, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Catkill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Lucille Blake Rolle, she was born September 21, 1917, in Key West, Fla.
Miss Rolle was a member of the First Baptist Church in Monticello and a member of Starlight Chapter #74, Order of the Eastern Star, in South Fallsburg.
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Hightower of New Britain, Conn., James Potier of Miami, Fla.; three nieces; three nephews; 22 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 26 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Monticello with the Rev. James Matthews officiating.
Burial was made in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

Phillip F. Swinden
Ret. Computer Tech., 80

Phillip F. Swinden of Walden, a retired computer testing technician for IBM in Kingston and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, October 18, 2001, in Walden. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Frederick and Edna Myers Swinden, he was born March 17, 1921, in Walden.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the battleship USS Texas.
Mr. Swinden is survived by his wife, Marion Bonnell Swinden, at home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Wayne Zanetti of Grahamsville, Alice Swinden of Bellevue, Neb., and Ann and Randy Wright of Warner Robins, Ga.; three stepsons, Dr. Paul Smiley and his wife, Terri, of Columbia Falls, Mont., Kip Smiley of Penngrove, Calif., and David Smiley and his wife, Beth, of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Swinden of Hot Springs, Ark., and David Swinden of Ellenville; a sister, Leola Lee of Southbury, Conn.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Conrad H. Baum Sr.
Retired Laborer, 80

Conrad H. Baum Sr. of Jeffersonville, a retired laborer for Union Local #17 and a retired maintenance worker at the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon, died Monday, October 22, 2001, at his home. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Conrad and Florence Parks Ernst Baum, he was born September 16, 1921, in Callicoon.
Mr. Baum was a member of the Jeffersonville Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Schwatz Baum, at home; five daughters, Sharon Engelhardt of West Seneca, Lois Brockner of North Branch, Constance Freidenstine of Youngsville, Cindee Baum of Pine Bush and Sandee Baum, at home; a son, Conrad Baum Jr. of Callicoon Center; a sister, Ruth Bohnert of East Rutherford, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, Dennis Brockner, Michael Brockner, Lisa Ondreyko, Brian Freidenstine, Jennifer Cusion, Ashley, Amanda and Alexis Baum, Douglas Engelhardt and Lori Oliver; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Danielle Brockner, James Engelhardt and Loren Ondreyko.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Balsey DeWitt
Ret. Gas Mixer, 89

Balsey DeWitt of Livingston Manor, a retired gas mixer for Central Hudson in Poughkeepsie and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 89 years of age.
The son of the late Marshall and Susan Loucks DeWitt, he was born August 27, 1912, in Livingston Manor. He was the widower of Lydia Brown DeWitt.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Balsey Dean and Edith DeWitt and Daniel L. and Carol DeWitt, all of Livingston Manor, and Richard L. and Elizabeth DeWitt of Kingston; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and John Leonard of Poughkeepsie; nine grandchildren, Balsey Dean DeWitt Jr., Denise DeWitt, Marcia Ellis, Allison Navarro, Jennifer Warburton, Daniel DeWitt, Tricia Slater, Perry DeWitt and Krystal Levine; and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joan DeWitt, a son, Arnold DeWitt, a grandson, Jonnah Wattoff; and several brothers and sisters.
Friends may call at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in Orchard Street Cemetery in Livingston Manor.
