MONTICELLO'S KATY SCHLICHTMAN set a meet record en route to winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.

Hot Games

MONTICELLO — May 1, 2001 – Seems that for the past few years the weather has been the number-one topic at the annual Monticello Track and Field Games, and Saturday’s windy, chilly conditions started a thousand conversations.
“As long as it’s not snowing, it’s okay by us,” said Ken Garry, meet director and Monticello athletic director. “Obviously the wind detracted from individual performances, but overall, I thought the meet went smoothly.”
Among the county teams, Tri-Valley placed second in the small school division in both boys’ and girls’ competition. Section IV power Sidney won both, while Marlboro (boys) and Washingtonville (girls) won in the Class A/B category. See results, page 15A.
Two of the more impressive wins were turned in by Sullivan West’s Sandra Scholz in the 400 and Monticello’s Katy Schlichtman in the 400 intermediate hurdles.
Scholz set a lifetime best and school record by copping the one-lapper in 1:00.6. Remarkably, she did it by running in the fifth lane of the “slow” heat; a mix-up with her name card knocked her out of the seeded race. Scholz edged Washingtonville standout Candice Colon by .3.
Schlichtman set a meet record by running 1:07.2 in her race, beating out Kingston’s Kim Kennedy by half a second.
Brad Young of Marlboro got the outstanding field performer nod by clearing 13-6 in the pole vault, three feet better than the runner-up mark. Josh DuMond of Sidney, the 110 hurdle winner, was the outstanding track performer.
On the girls’ side Kristen Callan of Monroe-Woodbury set a record in the hammer and also won the shot put to garner the outstanding field performer award. The track award went to 100 dash winner Theresa Manera, also of Monroe-Woodbury.
