RUNNERS HIT THE pavement at the start of the Jeff Jam 5K on Saturday.

Humid Morning Challenges
More Than 100 Runners

JEFFERSONVILLE — August 7, 2001 – Over 100 runners and walkers turned out Saturday for the sixth annual Jeff Jam 5K.
Despite the 8:30 a.m. start time, the participants still had to deal with humid conditions.
Handling the humid air the best were Raymond Revell and Jean Velasquez, as they were the first man and woman to cross the finish line.
“It was a tough race, the humidity was really tough,” said Velasquez, who finished the scenic course around Lake Jeffersonville with a time of 19:47. “But I love the course, it’s challenging.”
Also making the event tough for Velasquez was the fact that she was still feeling the effects of an 18.6 mile trail run six days before. And she planned to compete in the Monticello Monster 10K the next day (Sunday).
“I didn’t try to push too hard today,” she said.
Like Velasquez and the other participants, Revell, who was competing in his first Jeff Jam 5K, certainly noticed the humidity.
“That was the big thing today,” Revell said. “But I just worked as hard as I could.”
Although both winners intend to compete in the 2002 Jeff Jam 5K, Revell did not plan on running the Monster.
“I’ve run races on back-to-back days before but I was so tired that next day,” he said, referring to the Monday after a weekend of racing.
Race Director Cindy Herbert noted that for the second consecutive year the Jeff Jam 5K attracted over 100 participants.
“And we have more sponsors this year than we’ve ever had,” Herbert said. “We have great sponsors and great volunteers who help with the race.”
