THE MONTICELLO BIG League baseball team won the District 19 championship game at New Windsor on Sunday, July 29, beating Maybrook 7-5. The team consists of, front row: Ray Suarez and Dave Soderbloom. NEW WINDSOR — August 17, 2001 – Monticello defeated Maybrook 7-5 in the District 19 Big League championship game on Sunday, July 29.
Maybrook jumped off to a 2-0 lead against Monticello starter and winning pitcher Sean McGuire.
Monticello knotted the contest in the bottom of the first. Rich Fello singled and went to third on a double by Mark Stofko. George Brandes then singled home Fello, and Stofko scored on a fielder’s choice by Joe Rivela.
Maybrook scored one run in the top of the third to regain the lead. Monticello came back again in the bottom of the frame. Ray Suarez led off with a single, but was erased at second on Madussar Abbas’ fielder’s choice. Abbas stole second and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Jose Suarez.
Maybrook regained the lead in the fifth, only to have Monticello bounce back in its half of the inning. Terrence Hulse led off with a deep home run to tie the game. Later in the inning Jose Suarez singled and scored on a double by Fello.
Monticello padded its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brandes and Dave Soderbloom walked. Brandes scored on a single by Brian Heavey and Rivela scored on a fielder’s choice by Hulse.
Fello pitched the last two innings to preserve the win.
