Ruth Kent of Masten Lake, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at her home. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edward and Claire Ackerman Gorman, she was born April 11, 1928, in Paterson, N.J.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Russell W. Kent Sr., at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell W. Jr. and Joanne Kent of Montvale, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Thomas Davis of Honesdale, Pa.; a sister, Estelle Kent of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Trey, Matthew, Jodie, Kristopher and Kelly; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro.

Robert Loewinger of Monticello, the retired owner and operator of Men's World Boy's Town Clothing Store in Monticello and a longtime area resident, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Paul and Belle Pincus Loewinger, he was born March 26, 1929, in New York City.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Loewinger is survived by a son, Michael Loewinger of New City; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Alvin Katz of New York; five stepchildren, Robert, James, Joseph and Kathleen Macedonio, all of Long Island, and Jessica Lippis of New York City; two nieces, Jill and Trish; and his former wife, Cookie Pollack.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday at the Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello with Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Irving Krongel of Jeffersonville, the retired owner/operator of the former Krongel's Bakery in Jeffersonville and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Alex and Bessie Frost Krongel, he was born January 6, 1915, in New York City.
Mr. Krongel was a 50-year member of the Jeffersonville Fire Company, a member of the Jeffersonville Lions Club, the Jeffersonville Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Jeffersonville Synagogue.
In a family statement, it was said, "A well-known local historian and self-taught educator, he went from bread to the Bible."
Mr. Krongel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sophie Waxman Krongel, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Steven Grossman of Middletown; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Krongel of Jeffersonville; a sister, Annette Krongel Tofield of California; a grandson, Jed Grossman of New York City; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Krongel.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Thursday with Rabbi Joel Schwab officiating.
Burial was made in the Jeffersonville Synagogue Cemetery in Jeffersonville.

Fred A. "Handsome Freddie" Lewis of Ferndale, the owner of Ackerman's Motel and Handsome Freddie's Apartments in Ferndale and a 33-year area resident, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 80 years of age.
The son of Garnett Lyn Lewis and the late Joseph Lewis, he was born January 4, 1922, in Jamaica, West Indies.
Mr. Lewis was a member and head usher of St. Peter's Church and a 4th degree Knight of Father Cronin Council #4768, Knights of Columbus, both in Liberty. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marie Lum Lewis, at home; his mother of Toronto, Canada; four daughters, Kitty Lee of Jacksonville, Fla., Suzan Evans and her husband, Charles, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Lydia Lewis of Accord and Christina Lewis of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four granddaughters, Marisa Purcell, Marianne Purcell, Kathryn Perry and Meghan Perry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at noon at St. Peter's Church, 264 N. Main St., Liberty with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Edna Sommer, a 67-year resident of Newburgh, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Cornwall Hospital. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Russell and Rachel Lake Crawford, she was born November 9, 1915, in Napanoch.
Mrs. Sommer was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Newburgh. She worked for Fanny Farmer in Newburgh for 25 years and then worked for a number of years at Lloyd's of Newburgh in the houseware department.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a wonderful, loving person who will be greatly missed."
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles "Carl" Sommer, at home; two grandchildren and their spouses, Dana and Brad Wilson of Tocoma, Wash., and Kurt and Kim Engness of Newburgh; a great-grandson, Tyler Engness of New Jersey; and four nieces and their husbands, Arlene and Harold Brown of Grahamsville, Charlene and Jack Erceg of Sedona, Ariz., Lorraine and Stanley Strath of Saugerties and Joan and Terry Sheeley of Napanoch. She was predeceased by a daughter, Phyllis Engness and a brother, Harrison Crawford.

Catherine B. Cirelli of Barryville, a co-owner of the Main Street Liquor Store in Narrowsburg and a 12-year area resident, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at her home. She was 68 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas B. and Philomena M. Boehling Byrne, she was born October 16, 1933, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Cirelli was a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, a member of St. Ann's R.C. Church in Shohola, Pa., and a member of the Narrowsburg Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by her husband, John J. Cirelli, at home; two sons, John Henry Bessette of Barryville and Thomas Andre Bessette and his wife, Ann Marie, of Tobyhanna, Pa.; three daughters, Mary Eleanor Bessette and Catherine Renee Murdock, both of Highland Lake, and Robyn Ann Bessette of Saddle Brook, N.J.; a brother, Charles F. Byrne and his wife, Ellen, of Staten Island; a sister-in-law, Margaret Inez Byrne of Palmyra, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian Bessette, Eric Bessette, Alison Bessette and Cheyanne Renee Murdock; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Lt. Cmdr. the Rev. John E. Byrne and Thomas Michael Byrne.

Winifred M. Coughlin of Pond Eddy, a homemaker and longtime area resident, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at the Milford Senior Care Center in Milford, Pa. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Johanna Kehoe Murphy, she was born July 19, 1913, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of James Gibbons and Edward J. Coughlin.
Mrs. Coughlin was a member of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Pond Eddy and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Patricia Gibbons of York, Pa., and James and Ann Gibbons of Floral Park, L.I.; a sister, Elizabeth O'Hara of Commack, L.I.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Anne Lawson Collins of Waterloo, a former Bloomingburg resident and former operator of the Sul-Ora Lodge Roller Rink and Recreation facilities, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at the Seneca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waterloo. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Johnson Lawson, she was born September 7, 1909, in Woodbridge. She was the widow of W. Leonard Collins who died in April of 1997.
Mrs. Collins was also the assistant bank manager of the Wurtsboro office of the Bank of New York until she retired. She was a member of the Community Church of Bloomingburg and served for several years as a school board member of the Union Free School District in Bloomingburg. She moved to Geneva in 1989 and served on numerous committees there with her husband.
She is survived by a daughter, Joann Collins O'Connell of Ovid; a grandson, M. Craig O'Connell and his wife, Judy, her daughters, Hannah and Madeleine and her son, Finn; a granddaughter, Cynthia O'Connell Debottie and her husband, Michael, their sons, Brian and Kevin, and daughters, Molly and Shannon; a sister-in-law, Esther Collins Lunney; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Paul A. O'Connell in June 1994, a grandson, Paul A. O'Connell III in May 1965, six sisters, Anna Lawson, Agnes Heddy, Emma Broome, Edna Yaple, Lillian Burnett and Clara Lawson, and a brother, Capt. Carl Lawson of Troop C New York State Police.

Pearl White of Cochecton, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at the Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, Pa. She was 100 years of age.
The daughter of the late James Henry and Jennett Evelyn Foster Peck, she was born September 25, 1901, in Colchester. She was the widow of Harvey D. Campbell and Charles R. White.
Mrs. White is survived by two daughters, Minnie Labar of Waymart, Pa., and Mary Sampson of Whitney Point; four sons, Harvey Campbell Jr. of Pine Valley, William "Bill" Campbell of Bethany, Pa., James White of Chenango Forks and Robert White of Cochecton; two sisters, Arvilla Sutliff of Honesdale, Pa., and Inda Miller, age 102, of Lynn, Mass.; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters; a daughter, Betty Jane Campbell; two grandsons, Harold Scott and Jeffery White; and a great-granddaughter, Kerri-Jo White.

Hannah Doherty Kneafsey of Smallwood, a licensed practical nurse and an administrative secretary for the Woodbourne Correctional Facility for the New York State Department of Corrections and a 33-year resident of the area, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, after a long illness. She was 71 years of age.
The daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Degnan Doherty, she was born September 30, 1930, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of the late James Kneafsey, who died in 1976.
Mrs. Kneafsey was a member of St. Peter's Church in Monticello and was a S.E.F.A. campaign fund-raising volunteer for the American Heart Association.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Yonkyong Kneafsey of Waipahu, Hawaii; two daughters, Noreen and her husband, Gary Gettel of Moravia and Kathleen Kneafsey of Jeffersonville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Patrick and Dora Doherty of Franklin Lakes, N.J., and John and Barbara Doherty of Somerset, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.

Kathryn K. Albee of Sarasota, Fla., a former longtime resident of Roscoe, died Tuesday, January 29, 2002, in Sarasota, Fla. She was 92 years of age.
She was born July 22, 1909, in MacDougall, N.Y. She was the widow of Donald L. Albee who died September 20, 1990.
Mrs. Albee was a graduate of Syracuse University and had been a registered nurse. She was a member of the United Church of Roscoe and more recently a member of Church of the Palms in Sarasota, Fla.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald D. and Lucy Albee of Point Clear, Ala., and Roger and Lynne Albee of Dunwoody, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial will be made in the Bon Air Cemetery in Roscoe at a later date.

John A. Marks of Beach Lake, Pa., a retired accountant for the Municipal Credit Union of New York in New York City and a 10-year area resident, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at Bethany Village in Honesdale, Pa. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late J. Edwin and Gertrude Pierce Marks, he was born March 15, 1927, in Old Greenwich, Conn.
Mr. Marks was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.

The daughter of Christina Demasi Schoentube and the late William Schoentube, she was born August 27, 1965, on Staten Island.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro.
She is survived by her husband, Timothy R. Shaw, a son, John Shaw, and a daughter, Christina Shaw, all at home; and her mother and a sister, Laura Larson, both of Staten Island.

Ione "GiGi" Kelley, a 38-year resident of Monticello and a framing supervisor at the Todd Galleries before her retirement, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 67 years of age.
The daughter of the late Clarence E. and Argona Woods Kelley, she was born October 14, 1934, in Wilkesboro, N.C. She was the widow of Hasty H. Smith who died in 1956.
Ms. Kelley was raised in both North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro, N.C., where she attended Lincoln Heights High School. She had worked at many of the resorts in the Monticello area before her employment at Todd Galleries. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Monticello, to which she devoted her life.
She is survived by her companion, James Waters, and his grandson, Bobby Waters, both of Monticello; a son, Thomas Kelley Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother, Caldwell Woods Kelley of Barrington, N.H.; a sister, Claudette Kelley Denny of Ossining; an uncle, Claude Woods of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Kelley Ann Warris and Kimberly Smith; a great-granddaughter, Aliyah Warris; and several nieces and nephews.
