Gertrude Malkmus
Homemaker, 86

Gertrude B. Malkmus of Youngsville, a homemaker, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Care in the Catskills in White Sulphur Springs. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edmund and Irene Carey Brader, she was born April 24, 1915, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the widow of Ernest Malkmus Jr.
Mrs. Malkmus was a member of the Catskill Mountain Doll Club and was an active member and a lay Eucharist minister of St. John's Episcopal Church in Monticello. She contributed to the community where she resided by being a leader for 4-H and the Girls Scouts of America.
In a family statement, it was said, "Gertrude was a dedicated homemaker who used her considerable cooking, sewing and gardening skills for the benefit of those she loved. High standards and expectations were held for herself and her inner strength served her well. Gertrude will be remembered most for her lifelong intellectual curiosity and her witty and caring correspondence."
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Staulcup of Manchester, N.H., Nancy Bazzicalupo of East Northport and Linda Babicz of Youngsville; a son, James Malkmus of Florida; a brother, Robert Brader of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Dickman of Farmington, Me.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Alice Walters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 14 St. John St., Monticello.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Building Fund of St. John's Episcopal Church, 14 St. John St., Monticello, N.Y. 12701.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Roberta Steinberg
Office Manager, 63

Roberta Steinberg of Liberty, a lifelong area resident, the office manager for South End Auto Parts in Liberty and a former legal secretary for Cooke and Davis in Monticello, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at her home. She was 63 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ernest and Florence Fredenburgh, she was born November 27, 1938, in Liberty.
In a family statement, it was said, "Roberta was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother with special interests in gardening and cooking for her family, as well as being an avid homemaker. She will always be known for her extravagant holiday decorations."
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Steinberg, at home; four sons, David Townsend and his wife, Gail, of Liberty, Robert Steinberg and Jerry Steinberg, both of Liberty and Terry Steinberg of Tomkins Cove; two daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen and Ed Heimann of Montague, N.J., and Dina and Rodney Jester of Liberty; two brothers, Ernest "Bucky" Fredenburgh and Edward Fredenburgh, and a sister, Angelica "Chickie" Bloom, all of Liberty; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ruby and Alice Steinberg of North Carolina, and Idie and Joe Fracasse of California; 10 grandchildren, Crystal Kinisky, Heather Kinisky, Billy Kinisky, Joshua Townsend, Nicholas Kinisky, Taylor Jester, Nora Townsend, Katelin Jester, Danielle Heimann and Kristopher Heimann; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty on Sunday with the Rev. David McCarthy officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Miriam Gersten
Ret. Shop Mgr., 88

Miriam Gersten of Monticello, a retired manager of Marcia's Dress Shop in Monticello and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at the Seelig Division of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Max and Sarah Gotch Rosen, she was born December 15, 1913, in the Bronx. She was the widow of Nathan Gersten.
Mrs. Gersten is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Myrna and Arthur Kiss of Monticello; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Johanna Gersten of Monticello; three grandchildren, Alan Kiss and his wife, Adele, of Monticello, Nesa Gersten of the state of Florida and Stacy Gersten of New Jersey; and two great-grandchildren, Millie and Melissa Kiss.
Graveside services and burial were held on Wednesday at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating.
Shiva will be observed at the Kiss and Gersten homes in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

David Oretsky
Restaurateur, 79

David Oretsky of Parkland, Fla., a 25-year Florida resident and a former Crossways restaurateur in South Fallsburg, died Thursday, March 14, 2002. He was 79 years of age.
He is survived by three sons, Mitchell, Clifford and Andrew Oretsky; three grandchildren, Michelle, Molly and Zachary; a sister, Betty Glatzer; and a brother Moe Oretsky.
Funeral services were held at the Lakeside Memorial Park in Miami, Fla., on Friday.

John E. Wizemann
Ret. Electrician, 92

John Earl Wizemann of Callicoon, a retired electrical foreman in the Engineering Department of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. He was 92 years of age.
The son of the late Charles "Carl" F. and Christina Schumacher Wizemann, he was born January 26, 1910, in Callicoon. He was the widower of Ethelwynn Lusk Wizemann.
Mr. Wizemann was a 78-year member of the United Methodist Church in Callicoon, a 70-year member of the Callicoon Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the New York Chapter of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and a member of the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens. He was also a past commissioner of the Callicoon Fire District.
He is survived by several cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Wizemann.
Services will be held at noon on Tuesday at the Callicoon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in the Callicoon Cemetery in Callicoon.

Marie VanGinhoven
Ret. Telephone Oper., 72

Marie VanGinhoven of Mileses, a retired telephone operator for AT&T in New York City and a 18-year area resident, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at her home. She was 72 years of age.
The daughter of the late James W. and Mae Bridget O'Malley McBeath, she was born October 2, 1929, in Brooklyn.
She is survived by her husband, Earl VanGinhoven, at home; a daughter, Susan Gellar of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, Michael Rigney of Manhattan, Thomas Rigney of St. Petersburg, Fla., and James Rigney; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Douglas B. Mildner
Accountant/Mgr., 41

Douglas B. Mildner of Bethel, an accountant and manager of Phoenix Tax Service in Monticello, died suddenly Thursday, March 14, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. He was 41 years of age.
The son of Joan Barsky Mildner and the late Alvin Mildner, he was the grandson of the late Jack and Victoria Barsky, former owners of the Flagler Hotel in South Fallsburg and Ben and Ida Mildner, the former owners of the Lakewood Colony in Woodridge.
Mr. Mildner was a member of the Monticello Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons and had received numerous awards and citations for his service in and to the community.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was the center of our world and we will be lost without him."
He is survived by his mother of Atlantic City, N.J.; his wife, Brenda Mills-Mildner, at home; three sons, Brandon Mildner of Liberty, Michael Mills of Hawaii and Ryan Mills of the state of Florida; a daughter, Lisa Mills of the state of Florida; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Suzanne Mildner of Bellingham, Wash.; and two nieces, Alicia and Jacqueline Mildner.
Services were held Sunday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello with Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiating.
Burial was made in the Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello.

Dieter E. Martin
Ret. Engineer, 63

Dieter E. Martin of Salisbury Mills, a retired engineer at Enbee Plastics Company of Long Island City and a 30-year area resident, died March 14, 2002. He was 63 years of age.
The son of the late Ernst and Ida Pfeuffer Martin, he was born February 20, 1939, in Frankfurt, Germany.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Martin, and a daughter, Lorelei Martin, both at home; a brother, Werner Martin and his wife, Anni of Frankfurt, Germany; a sister, Inge Normann of Pennsylvania; his mother-in-law, Anna Tamburello of Bloomingburg; four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Robert and Maryann Flowers of Montgomery, Carmine and Petrina Varone of Chester, Vincent and Judy Tamburello of Wallkill and Michael Minando of Florida; 13 nephews and nieces, Wolfram, Michael, Peter, Steven, Eva, Michael, Vincent, Nina, Christine, Debbie, Linda, Jerry and Margaret; a godson, Vinny; and seven grand-nephews and 10 grand-nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville with the Rev. John Keaveney officiating

Heidi A. Holway
Photographer, 39

Heidi Ann Holway of Eldred, a self-employed photographer, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Barryville. She was 39 years of age.
The daughter of Oscar and Barbara Desilets Holway, she was born January 28, 1963, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
A graduate of Chaska High School in Chaska, Minn., she attended the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. She was known as "Grace" to her friends.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a gifted athlete and an exceptionally talented artist and photographer. She was an adventuresome and creative spirit. She had friends in the East and in the West, some of whom were lifelong, all of whom will miss her profoundly."
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Oscar and Ida Holway of Blue Mound, Kans.; and a sister, Stephanie Guenther of Nevada, Mo. She was predeceased by a brother, Oscar.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
A memorial service will be held at 5:45 p.m. on Friday at the Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

Lillian T. Smith
Retired Clerk, 87

Lillian T. Smith of Narrowsburg, a retired clerk for Keenan's Pharmacy and a 44-year area resident, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at her home. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Alfred A. Jr. and Jane Tinsley Smith, she was born April 11, 1914, in Brooklyn.
Miss Smith was a member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society of the church and a member of Court Rafael of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
She is survived by two nephews and their wives, Alfred A. III and Linda Smith of Narrowsburg and Wayne and Theresa Smith of Staten Island; a niece and her husband, Rosemary and Tom Brown of Staten Island; a grand-niece, Christina Butler and her husband, Timothy; a grand-nephew and his wife, Alfred A. IV and Maria Smith; two great-grandnephews; and a great-grandniece.
Friends may call at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Thomas Jones officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Maria Rallis
Homemaker, 75

Maria Rallis of Milanville, Pa., a homemaker and a 15-year area resident, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Marion Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pa. She was 75 years of age.
The daughter of the late Vincent and Filomena Sarcinella, she was born September 8, 1926, in New York City. She was the widow of Peter Rallis who died in 1994.
Mrs. Rallis was a member of the Calkins Labor Grange.
She is survived by a son, Theodore Rallis of Mamaroneck; five sisters, Antonitte Delorenzo and Louise D'Onofrio, both of Brooklyn, Josephine Amato of Toms River, N.J., Rose Russo of Maybrook and Anna Gerladis of Totowa, N.J.; a brother, James Sarcinella of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Leone and Regina Russo.

Richard L. Elliott
Ret. Chemical Engr., 81

Richard L. Elliott of New Berlin, a retired chemical engineer at Bendix in Sidney, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, in New Berlin. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Lee and Marion Kolfrat Elliott, he was born September 6, 1920, in New Berlin.
A 1938 graduate of New Berlin High School, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1942. While employed at Bendix, Mr. Elliott secured five different patents. He was an avid outdoorsman, gardener and maker of maple syrup.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and a member of Sigma Xi Honorary Society. Mr. Elliott was a communicant of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin and was a volunteer at the Chase Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Williams Elliott, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Barbara Elliott of Cazenovia; a daughter, Barbara E. Hust of Kenoza Lake; four grandchildren, Amy L. Perrone of North Syracuse, Andrew R. Elliott of Manlius, Daniel Hust of Callicoon and Rebekah Failla of Colorado Springs, Colo; four great-grandchildren, Peighton, Cassandra, Mackenzie and Dominic.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Chruch in New Berlin with the Rev. Charles Taylor, pastor of the church, officiating.
Burial will be made in Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin.
