Harold R. Royce
Ret. Asphalt Worker, 81
Harold R. Royce of Kenoza Lake, a 15-year seasonal resident of Spring Hill, Fla., and a retired employee of Asphalt Distributors Corp. of Liberty, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Hernando/ Pasco Hospice Care Unit in Florida. He was 81 years of age.
He was born in Halls Mills.
A World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving at the Battle of the Bulge, Mr. Royce was a member of the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Administration of the church. He was also a member of the Kenoza Lake Fire Department, serving as a commissioner of the fire district, a member of the Iroquois Hunting and Fishing Club, a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge #521 (formerly of Jeffersonville and more recently merged with the Masonic Lodge in Liberty), and a committeeman for the 4-H, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Boy Scouts of America Troop #115.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Brown Royce, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Doris Royce of Cochecton; a daughter and son-in-law, Leah Mae and Ed Waldron of Jeffersonville; two grandchildren, Steven and Jennifer Royce; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Haley Royce.
Cremation was made in Florida.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church.

Dorothy S. Haas
Ret. Reg. Nurse, 81
Dorothy S. Haas of Monticello, a retired registered nurse and a 18-year area resident, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Louise Hagermann Renz, she was born July 26, 1920, in Jersey City, N.J.
She graduated from Christ Hospital Nursing Program in Jersey City and later became a maternity supervisor in that hospital.
Mrs. Haas was a member of Grove Reformed Church in North Bergen, N.J., and an affiliate member of the Monticello United Methodist Church. She was a member and past matron of Guiding Star Chapter No. 36, Order of the Eastern Star, and had served as a past grand representative of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Haas was also a member of the Southern Catskill Amateur Radio Society.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles Haas, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. and Virginia Haas of West Milford, N.J., and David W. and Marilyn Haas of North Bergen, N.J.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello on Sunday evening with Pastor Gene Smith of the Monticello United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment was made Monday in the Grove Reformed Church Cemetery in North Bergen, N.J.

Herbert Bryan, 72
Herbert Bryan, a former resident of Youngsville, died March 7, 2002 at the Tampa Medical Center in Tampa, Fla. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Elmer and Julia Bryan, he was born April 25, 1929, in Youngsville.
Mr. Bryan was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by two sisters, Hazel Danzer of Florida and Verna Kimmes of Youngsville; two brothers, Lloyd Bryan of California and Victor Bryan of Florida. He was predeceased by a sister, Ethel Edwards.
Cremation was under the direction of the Tampa Bay Funeral Home in Florida.
Interment will be made at a later date.
Thomas DeLuca
Ret. Carpenter, 71
Thomas DeLuca of Youngsville, a retired carpenter, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Gaetano and Claire Salamone DeLuca, he was born May 24, 1930, in Brooklyn.
Mr. DeLuca is survived by two daughters, Claire Pecsi of Youngsville and Grace Behrens of Liberty; a son, Guy DeLuca of Hortonville; several brothers and sisters, including John DeLuca of Youngsville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
There were no services.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Karl C. Hof of Barryville, a retired sheet metal worker for the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, a retired Sullivan County Highway Department worker and a 37-year area resident, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at his home. He was 93 years of age.
The son of the late Heinrich and Elizabeth Stuhlfauth Hof, he was born July 1, 1908, in Frankenthal, Germany.
He is survived by his wife, Lotty Hof, at home; two children, Karl H. Hof and his wife, Donna, of Yulan, and Lyn Desseauve of Yulan; four grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Ret. Chemistry Teacher
Ethel M.B. Wachter of Long Island, a retired chemistry teacher for South Side High School in Rockville Centre, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at the Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. She was 100 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edward Sr. and Margaret Covart Bisland, she was born February 18, 1902, in Glen Spey. She was the widow of Charles Lucas Wachter.
Mrs. Wachter was a graduate of Albany State Teachers College and earned her master's degree in teaching at Columbia University. She was a member of Phi Delta sorority.
She is survived by a niece, Lillian Agnelakos of Glen Spey; two nephews, Roger Bisland of Glen Spey and Alfred Bisland of Lynn Haven, Fla. She was predeceased by a nephew, Edward Bisland.
Services were held Monday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis followed by burial in the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.
Olga Linnik, 85
Ret. Seamstress
Olga Linnik of Glen Spey, a retired seamstress in Newark, N.J., and a 23-year area resident, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Gregory and Irene Romaniuk, she was born February 14, 1917, in Ukraine. She was the widow of Alexander Linnik who died December 10, 1992.
Mrs. Linnik was a member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Glen Spey, the Ukrainian Women's League of the USA and the Ukrainian Fraternal Organization. Before coming to the United States, she was a teacher in Ukraine.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Larisa and Victor Shevchenko of Oyster Bay Cove; two granddaughters and their husbands, Christine and Frank Mariconda of East Northport and Tami and Thomas Carchietta of Muttontown, L.I.; five great-grandchildren, Alex Carchietta, Thomas Carchietta and Victoria Carchietta, all of Muttontown, and Michael Mariconda and Jon Mariconda of East Northport.
A Liturgy Mass was offered on Saturday at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church with V. Rev. Nestor Kowal officiating.
Burial was made in St. Andrew's Cemetery in South Bound Brook, N.J.

Ethan Scott Gildersleeve, the infant son of Guy Gildersleeve and Shelley Sammann, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Albany Medical Center. He was one day old.
He was born earlier that day.
He is survived by his parents of Livingston Manor; a sister, Alexandria Sammann, at home; and a brother, Guy Gildersleeve II of Liberty.
Services were held Monday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Roy Schaeffer officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Redmond E. Jacobsen
Ret. Carpet Installer, 89
Redmond Edward Jacobsen of Wanaksink Lake, a retired carpet installer for the Gundolt Carpet Work Room, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Brooklyn after a long illness. He was 89 years of age.
The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacobsen, he was born May 29, 1912, in Norway.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Wanaksink Lake Association.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kirsten Gunderson Jacobsen, at home; three sons, Redmond Edward Jacobsen of Stony Point, Walter Jacobsen of Staten Island and Robert Jacobsen of Brooklyn; a daughter, Gene Laing of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren, Sherry Jarrett, Marc Laing, Eric Jacobsen, Glen Jacobsen, Lisa Jacobsen, Karissa Ryan, Karin Jacobsen and Karl Jacobsen; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Zachary and Gabrielle Jarrett.
Services were held Monday at The Church of the Nazarene in Rock Hill.
Burial, with full military honors, was held at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

George S. Allison IV

George Suffern Allison IV of Wurtsboro, formerly of Rockland County, died Friday, March 8, 2002. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late George S. III and Dorcas Lake Benjamin Allison, he was born January 11, 1917.
He was an architect and a retired president of the Allison & Ver Valen Company Inc., a retail lumberyard in Haverstraw founded by his father in 1909.
He attended Haverstraw High School, Harrisburg Business Academy and Syracuse University. A World War II veteran of the U. S. Army from 1941 to 1945, he served as a Staff Sergeant.
Mr. Allison was a past commodore and founding member of the Minnesceongo Yacht Club in Grassy Point and a member and elder of Central Presbyterian Church in Haverstraw.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria A. Allison of Wurtsboro; a son, Donald G. Allison of New York City; a daughter, Lynne A. Jones of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a step-son, Scott Larsen of Wurtsboro; two step-daughters, Allison Speer of Hewitt, N.J., and Leanne Walsh of Wurtsboro; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert B. Allison.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 10, at the Central Presbyterian Church, 64 New Main St., Haverstraw.
Interment will be made in Mount Repose Cemetery.

Dora Elizabeth Cooper of Wurtsboro, a former West Haverstraw resident, a retired matron at Letchworth Village in Thiells and a 30-year area resident, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center.
The daughter of the late Oscar A. and Lillian F. Stevens Hilliard, she was born in Deerfield, N.J. She was the widow of Ralph Howard Cooper who died February 7, 1971.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of BPOE Lodge No. 877 in Haverstraw.
In a family statement, it was said, "She lived her life her way and was loved by all. She was known for always having a beautiful smile on her face."
Mrs. Cooper is survived by two daughters, Donna J. Manning of Wurtsboro and June Natale and her husband, James, of Meredith, N.H.; two grandsons, Brian K. Manning of Westtown and Larry Natale and his wife, Lori, of Walden; three granddaughters, Terry Andriefski and her husband, Greg, of Haverstraw, Merry Jean Kunkle and her husband, Thomas, of Newburgh, and Vickie Behr and her husband, Edward, of Monroe; nine great-grandchildren, Thomas, Alison, Jason, Ricky, Kenneth, Nikolaus, Nancy, Randy and Larry Jr.; and a great-great-grandson, David. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jessica.

Mary L. Wood of Monticello, a retired bank teller for Key Bank in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Peter C. and Daisy Weber Lilholt, she was born June 30, 1918, in Bayonne, N.J. She was the widow of Chester "Sut" G. Wood, who died May 4, 1991.
Mrs. Wood was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bailey-Richman Post No. 9588, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Monticello Senior Citizens, all in Monticello.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis O. and Maureen Wood of Naperville, Ill., and Richard A. and Janice Wood of Monticello; two grandchildren, Tiffany A. Wood and Adam R. Wood, both of Monticello; a brother, Lester Lilholt of Lowville; a sister, Irene Rogers of Falls Church, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Louis and John Lilholt.
Services were held Monday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Gene M. Smith officiating.
Burial was made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Ronald G. Heinicke of Glen Spey, a supervisor for Kolmar Labs in Port Jervis and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Middletown Regional Hospital in Middletown, Ohio. He was 55 years of age.
The son of the late George M. and Genevieve Mae Stanton Heinicke, he was born February 18, 1947, in Port Jervis.
In a family statement, it was said, "Ron was a dedicated family man and an avid outdoorsman."
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Gina Heinicke, at home; two sons, Jamie Heinicke, at home, and Mark Williams of Canon City, Colo.

The daughter of Daisy Seale Burgess and the late Charles Burgess, she was born October 8, 1933, in Queens. She was the widow of Homer Hastings Jr.
Mrs. Hastings was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello, the Order of the Eastern Star and Epsilon Beta Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Christine Hastings of Greene, Scott and Denise Hastings and Glenn and Sherri Hastings, all of Monticello; a sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Augustus DeSiervo, and her mother, all of Orono, Me.; seven grandchildren, Eric, Stephanie, Shannon, Christopher, Jay, Alexa and Ryan; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Jacqueline Burgess.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dorothy G. Bliss of Walker Valley, a lifelong area resident and a retired owner of the Cobblestone Restaurant in Walker Valley, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Campbell Hall Health Care Center. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late George and Hazel DeGraff Mitteer, she was born September 18, 1928, in Hurleyville. She was the widow of Henry Bliss.
In a family statement, it was said, "Dorothy was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed. She will be gardening in heaven."
She is survived by a son, Robert Robinson of Rock Hill; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Jeffrey Lyons of Wurtsboro; a sister, Norma Garlock of Bloomingburg; five grandchildren, Joshua, Mary Beth and Emily Robinson and Jarred and Nicole Lyons; three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Sara and Shawn Robinson; and a sister-in-law, Marie Mitteer.

David D. Porter, a 16-year resident of Grahamsville and a retired electrical engineer, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Dorothy and Bennett Porter, he was born July 17, 1920, in Newark, N.J.
A United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he spent more than a year in Japan as part of the Occupation Forces. He graduated from Columbia University as an electrical engineer and lived in several towns in New Jersey during his professional carreer.
He was a member of the Grahamsville First Aid Squad for many years, serving as treasurer. He was also an active member of the Tri-Valley Lions Club and was a founding member of the group who restored the Red Hill Fire Tower.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Porter, at home; a son, Steve Porter of Grahamsville; and countless friends.

Eleanor Madeline Simon Vandemark of Port Jervis, a retired attendant at the Middletown State Hospital and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at her home. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Jerome A. and Madeline Frey Simon, she was born on August 30, 1921, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Vandemark was a member of the Otisville-Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph T. Vandemark, at home; five children and their spouses, Jo-Ann and Al Schubert of Eastman, Mass., Ruth Ann and Roy Sink of Sweetwater, Tenn., John and Nancy Vandemark of Otisville, Jerome and Louise Vandemark of Godeffroy and Jodie Vandemark of Monticello; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Robert Hoose of Bloomingburg; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Jeanette Roll and Dorothy Gregory.

James "Eddie" McDuffy of Liberty died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 66 years of age.
The son of the late James E. and Theresa Helms McDuffy, he was born July 18, 1935, in New Bedford, Mass.
He is survived by a brother, Robert A. McDuffy of West Wareham, Mass.; two aunts, Florence Welch and Genevieve Ward, both of Livingston Manor; three nieces; three nephews; and many cousins.
Services were held Monday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with the Rev. Gerald Wondra officiating.
Burial was made in the Halsey Cemetery in Long Eddy.
