State Women's Tourney
Set for Syracuse

By Ed Townsend, Bowling Highlights
SULLIVAN COUNTYJanuary 25, 2002 – Entries will close on Tuesday, February 5 for the 66th Annual State Women’s tournament. The event will be held in Syracuse, beginning April 5 and continuing on the weekends through May 19.
The team event will be at Creno’s Bowl Mor Lanes, East Syracuse and the Doubles and Singles at Flamingo Bowl in Liverpool.
This year offers a new and exciting format for bowlers of all average classes. There are four and five women team events in five divisions.
Only the top division of 190 average and over is scratch in all of the events. All others are handicapped for the first time in the history of the tournament.
Participants can bowl up to three times in the team event and once in the doubles and singles.
Bowlers are urged to submit their entries soon as prime spots are filling.
For information and entry forms bowlers can contact the State Office at 1-800-404-6501.

Bowling Tip

By Mike Luongo
Bowlers: This week’s tip will help you understand correct shoulder alignment when throwing your strike ball and making spares.
When throwing a bowling ball, the shoulders should not necessarily be straight (perpendicular) in relation to the lane. Instead, they should be aligned straight in relation to the target mark you are trying to hit. This is called pre-setting the angle of the shoulders.
There are three rules regarding shoulder alignment:
1. When playing straight down the boards, your shoulders should be straight in relation to the lane.
2. When making shots to the right of the head pin, open your shoulders in relation to the lane.
3. When making shots to the left of the head pin, close your shoulders in relation to the lane.
Doing this is easy if you imagine that there is a three foot arrow poised on your right shoulder (or left shoulder if you are left handed).
Simply point the imaginary arrow at the target and the angle will automatically be correct. Note: Your armswing should never change, instead, adjust the angle of the shoulders so that your armswing is in line with the target.
Mike Luongo is technically certified through IBPSIA and is a Silver Level Coach with USA Bowling. If you have a question or subject you would like covered, Mike can be reached at 845-341-1694 or via e-mail at mikespro@warwick.net.
