LIBERTY May 3, 2002 Jay Samant remained undefeated on the season as the Liberty tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory against Ellenville on Wednesday in an OCIAA National Conference match.
Liberty improved its overall record to 4-4 overall and its OCIAA National Conference record to 3-2. Ellenville dropped to 2-6, 1-5 OCIAA
In singles play, Josh Benton (Ellenville) defeated Gary Berthol (Liberty) 6-3, 6-4; Eric Rabino (E) def. Jacob Burns (L) 6-4, 6-1; Jay Samant (L) def. Jim Sloan (E) 6-1, 7-5; Will Mirrer (E) def. Jon Crowley (L) 6-0, 6-2.
In the doubles competition, A.J. Gill and Jay Champlin (L) def. Edward Wendell and Sike Bennett (E) 6-0, 6-4; Matt Black and Ian Olsen (L) def. Kenny Stalter and Rodrigo Saez (E) 6-4, 7-6, (8-6) and Adrian Ponce and Rafael Ruiz (L) won by forfeit.
This is a tough year, Liberty Coach Steve Colman said. More than half of my team (members) are seniors. Next year is going to be a rebuilding year.
