Batters Did

By Rob Potter
JEFFERSONVILLE – July 2, 2002:

Overall Record: 14-4

League Record: 7-3 OCIAA Division IV.

Team Leaders: Senior shortstop Jon Fanning was the Bulldogs’ top batter, hitting .485 this season. He had an .864 slugging percentage and hit four home runs and four doubles. He also recorded 24 RBIs, which was second most on the team.
Senior Kyle Bright led the team with 31 RBIs this spring. Bright, who pitched and played third base, had a .446 batting average. On the mound, he sported a 7-1 won-loss record and a 1.73 earned run average.
Senior third baseman Rob Taylor hit .456 this season and posted a .588 slugging percentage. Taylor had 16 RBIs and had at least one hit in every one of the Bulldogs 18 games this season. He also went through the season without striking out at the plate.

Season Highlight: “Beating Fallsburg in the sectionals was a highlight,” Coach Kurt Scheibe, Jr. said. “And the week after the senior trip we beat two Class B schools – Goshen and Monticello. We were starting to play our best baseball of the season then.”

Season Lowlight: “Three of our four losses were against Tuxedo,” Scheibe said. “We lost to them 16-15 in extra innings in the sectional semifinals, that was a tough way to end the season. And they beat us 13-0 down there in Tuxedo during the regular season.”

Other Comments: Scheibe noted the contributions this season of his assistant coach, Phil Fanning.
“He deserves a lot of credit,” Scheibe said.
The coach also credited the team members for the way they played this spring.
“This was the first season we had a combined Sullivan West baseball team,” Scheibe commented. “The kids came together and worked very well together.”

Team Awards: At the recent Sullivan West athletic banquet, Fanning was presented with the Offensive MVP Award and Bright received the Defensive MVP Award.
