Sophie Krongel
Ret. Bookkeeper, 89

Sophie Krongel of Jeffersonville, a retired bookkeeper and manager for Krongel & Son's Bakery in Jeffersonville and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Grover M. Hermann Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Callicoon. She was 89 years of age.
She was the widow of Irving Krongel who died in 2002.
Mrs. Krongel was a member of the Jeffersonville Synagogue and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Steven Grossman of Middletown; a brother, Milton Waxman of Boca Raton, Fla.; a grandson, Jed Grossman of Miami, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Krongel.
Services were held Sunday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Burial was made in the Jeffersonville Synagogue Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grover Hermann Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Callicoon, N.Y. 12723.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

William F. Haight
Ret. Carpenter, 82

William F. Haight of Long Eddy, a retired carpenter/contractor and a former resident of Wyckoff, N.J., died Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
The son of the late Frank and Rose Sisco Haight, he was born February 18, 1921.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of VFW Post 7086 in Midland Park, N.J. and an active member of St. Elizabeth's R.C. Church in Wyckoff until his retirement to Long Eddy. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Delaware Valley Knights of Columbus #4478 and a 4th Degree member of Hon. George L. Cooke Assembly #0722.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anna Latrecchia Haight; six children and their spouses, Rosann and Richard Mirch of Long Eddy, Marjorie and Joseph Lipari of Barnegat, N.J., William and Mary Haight of Oakland, N.J., Nicholas and Marie Haight of Boca Raton, Fla., Carl and Donna Haight of Oakridge, N.J., and Anne Marie and Gary Ball of Nazareth, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Haight; and three sisters, Emma Dreher, Winifred Wastog and Marie Duvo. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Haight, and a sister, Clara Heidt.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon on Monday with Rev. Ignatius Smith officiating.
Interment will be made at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, N.J.

Jeanne Ann Baier
Ret. Rehab. Asst., 73

Jeanne Ann Baier of Smallwood, a rehabilitation assistant for the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in West Brentwood and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ralph and Ethelyn Hale Mortensen, she was born March 28, 1930, in Queens Village.
Mrs. Baier was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello.
She is survived by a son, David Baier of the state of Florida; three daughters, Debra Baier of California, Kathleen Kropat of Smallwood and Lucille Williams of the state of Florida; nine grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Hunter, Courtney, Jason, Kimberley, Kristina, Bryan, Keith and Brendan; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Mortensen.
In a family statement, it was said "The family would like to thank the staff of the 5th floor of the Catskill Regional Medical Center for their help, love and support for Jeanne. She will be deeply missed by all."
A Funeral Mass was offered Monday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello with Father Timothy Wiggins officiating.
Burial was made in Calverton National Cemetery in Riverhead.
Funeral arrangements were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

Joseph Schjeveland, 45

Joseph "Joe Mountain" Schjeveland, a seven-year resident of Long Eddy, died at his home on Friday, July 18, 2003. He was 45 years of age.
He was born September 18, 1957, in San Diego, Calif., and was the adopted son of the late George and Madeline Schjeveland.
Mr. Schjeveland was a commissioner for the Long Eddy Fire Department and a member of the Firemen's Auxiliary.
He is survived by his father, Joe Schnur, a brother, Tommy Schnur, and a nephew, Jeremy Lewis, all of California.
Private cremation was followed by burial in the Rock Valley Cemetery.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on August 9 at the Long Eddy Firehouse.

Carl D. Keesler
Lander's Mgr., 33

Carl D. Keesler of Callicoon, a sales manager for Lander's River Mart in Callicoon and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at his home. He was 33 years of age.
The son of Philip and Linda Cole Keesler, he was born September 13, 1969, in Honesdale, Pa.
Mr. Keesler was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Callicoon Business Association, both of Callicoon.
He is survived by his parents of Damascus, Pa.; a sister, Brenda Keesler of Equinunk, Pa.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, John and Cathy Sue Keesler of Equinunk, Robert and Maria Keesler of Vestal and Greg Keesler of Damascus, Pa.; and a nephew, Dillon Keesler.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Jacob Wielhouwer officiating.
Burial will be made in Hillcrest Cemetery in Galilee, Pa.

Amy Florence Paes
T-V Student, 10

Amy Florence Paes of Loch Sheldrake, a student at the Tri-Valley School, died on Saturday, July 19, 2003. She was 10 years of age.
The daughter of Ronald Paes and Laurie Edwards, she was born August 17, 1992, in Kingston.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Joseph Camisa Sr.; a sister, Rene Paes; six brothers, Christopher Freeman, Robert Freeman, Kenneth Paes, Stephen Paes, Joseph Camisa Jr. and Adam Roberts; her maternal grandfather, Robert Edwards; and her step-grandmother, Anna Edwards.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 Main St., Woodbourne, with the Rev. Carl Caskey officiating.
Burial will be made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.

Paul Kieffer
Chef, 74

Paul Kieffer of Eldred, a chef at the French Pavilion in Manhattan and a 13-year area resident, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Theophile and Jeanne Metz Kieffer, he was born November 26, 1928, in New York City.
A veteran of the United States Army, he was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Yulan and a member of the Society Philanthropic in New York City.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Louise Meyer Kieffer, at home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Nell Kieffer of Lithia, Fla., and Raymond Kieffer of Astoria; a daughter, Lisa Kieffer and her husband, Glenn, of Astoria; a brother Pierre Kieffer of Silver Spring, Md.; two granddaughters, Emily Kieffer and Anna Kieffer; four nieces and a nephew.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville, on Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m.
A prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Anthony's Church in Yulan with the Rev. Anthony Moore officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred.

Joseph L. Girsch
Ret. NYPD, 72

Joseph L. Girsch of Palm Bay, Melbourne, Fla., a 1981 retiree of the New York Police Department 18th Precinct, Mid-Town North, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Allen and Mae Menzell Girsch, he was born December 13, 1930, in Liberty.
He resided in Monroe from 1971 to 1991.
Mr. Girsch is survived by two sons, Robert Girsch and David and his wife, Lee Girsch, all of Newburgh; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Dara of Newburgh.
No further information was submitted.

Ross Giumarra
Bldg. Supt., 52

Ross Giumarra of Middletown, a building superintendent for Brewery Apartments and a carpet installer for Broadloom City in Middletown, died unexpectedly on Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Horton Campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 52 years of age.
The son of the late George and Dorothy Gambit Giumarra, he was born March 4, 1951 in Hackensack, N.J.
Mr. Giumarra is survived by his companion, Bobbie Christiansen, at home; a daughter, Erin Giumarra of Monticello; two brothers, Bruce Giumarra and his wife, Terri, of Mahwah, N.J., and George Giumarra of Hackensack, N.J.; two nephews, Chris and Jeff; and a niece, Juliann.
Services were held Monday at the Morse Funeral Home in Middletown.
Cremation was made at the Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester.

Mildred Bullen
Homemaker, 87

Mildred Bullen of Middletown, a longtime area resident and a homemaker, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at her home. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Andrew and Josephine Schultz, she was born February 20, 1917, in Kingston, Pa.
She is survived by a sister, Andrea McDonough of Kingston, Pa.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Mariann Schultz of Stockholm, N.J.; a daughter, Janice Lewis, at home; two grandchildren, Mark Pittenger of Middletown and Lori Santise of Wurtsboro; and six great-grandchildren, Michael, Kaylie, Anna, Randy, Thomas and Vincent.
Services were held on Monday at the Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Tappan Cemetery.
