Ethel Gain Sempf
Ret. Pharmacist, 94
Ethel Gain Sempf of Passaic, N.J., a retired pharmacist and a former resident of Rutherford and Nutley, NJ., died Monday, September 15, 2003, at the Chestnut Hill Residence in Passaic.
Born in Jamaica, N.Y., she grew up in Jeffersonville.
Mrs. Sempf retired in 1965, after working for 10 years at the Schering Corp. in Bloomfield, N.J.
She was a member of the Vincent United Methodist Women and The Nutley Historical Society and was a former Girl Scout volunteer in Rutherford.
She is survived by two daughters, Wendy Sempf Byrne and Linda Roccas; and a grandson.
Services were held Thursday at the Vincent United Methodist Church in Nutley, N.J.
Cremation was private.
Shirley Lowrey
Ret. Ins. Agent, 77
Shirley Lowrey of Livingston Manor, a retired insurance agent, died at her home on Tuesday, September 16, 2003. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Eleanor Smith Baldwin, she was born September 24, 1925, in New York City.
Mrs. Lowrey was a former member of the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Lowrey, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John L. and Debra Lowrey of Liberty and David M. and Karen Lowrey of Armonk; two daughters, Leslie B. Farmer of New Hampshire and Cynthia L Woodard and her husband, Michael, of Livingston Manor; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, with the Rev. Robert Hoag officiating.

John J. Aqua
Ret. Pharmacist
John J. Aqua, a former resident of Monticello, died Saturday, September 13, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pa.
The son of the late Louis and Rose Gardner Aqua, he was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He was the widower of Helen Streifer Aqua.
Mr. Aqua was a graduate of Temple University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He owned and operated several pharmacies prior to his retirement, including Aqua's Pharmacy on West Broadway in Monticello, which he operated during the 1950s and 1960s.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served as a chief pharmacist's mate and was in several of the major campaigns of the Pacific Theatre of War.
Mr. Aqua is survived by a son, Ronald Aqua, of Austin, Tex.; two grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin; two granddaughters, Hailey and Rebecca Strobel; two brothers, Herman and Abraham; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda A. Strobel, two brothers, Joseph and Isadore Aqua, and a sister, Molly Herskovitz.
Graveside services and burial were held September 14 at the Anshe Emes Cemetery in Plains Township, Pa., with Rabbi Meir Rosenberg officiating.

Marino A. Crozzoli
Ret. Mason, 75
Marino A. "Pop" Crozzoli, a 55-year resident of Liberty and a retired mason for Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Local 44, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Giovanni and Santina Crozzoli, he was born November 26, 1927, in Italy.
In a family statement, it was said, "Marino was devoted to his wife, Nena, his children and grandchildren and enjoyed being creative with his hands."
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nena Crozzoli, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Giovanni "John" and Trudy Crozzoli and Anthony "Tony" and Pam Crozzoli, all of Liberty; three grandchildren, Derrick, Jamie and Michael; a brother, and sister-in-law, Victor and Maria Crozzoli of College Point, Queens; two nephews, Victor and Chris; a niece, Susan; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Tillie.
Services were held Thursday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. David McCarthy officiating.
Burial was made in the Liberty Cemetery.

Helen Wisniewski

Helen Wisniewski of Monticello, a longtime area resident, died at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale, Pa. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Serafin Wisniewski, she was born February 4, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Wilma Wisniewski of Santa Maria, Calif; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by six brothers, John, Edward, Stanley, Walter, Benjamin and Louis Wisniewski.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.

Mary J. McGinness
IBM Employee, 60
Mary Jane Zambito McGinness of Milton, a 25-year employee of IBM in Poughkeepsie and a 22-year area resident, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at her home. She was 60 years of age.
The daughter of the late Dr. Salvatore and Elizabeth Gaffney Zambito, she was born December 22, 1942, in Newburgh.
A 1964 graduate of SUNY Cortland and a frequent volunteer for the United Way and other charitable organizations, she loved cooking as well as spending time outdoors golfing, fishing and at the beach.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a devoted mother. She died at home, peacefully in her sleep."
She is survived by a daughter, Anne M. McGinness and a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Jennifer McGinness, all of Boston, Mass.; three brothers, S. Stephen Zambito of Marlboro, Frank E. Zambito of Highland and Dr. Michael J. Zambito of Bloomingburg; many cousins, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William Zambito.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Roseton.
Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Marlboro.

George Helm, 72
Ret. Insurance Agt.
George Helm of Henderson, Nev., a former resident of Wurtsboro and Middletown, died Saturday, September 13, 2003, following a long illness. He was 72 years of age.
He was the son of the late Ruth and R. Leslie Helm, former residents of Wurtsboro.
Mr. Helm retired as a Chief Petty Officer E7 from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. He retired from Prudential Insurance Co. after 20 years and then started his own insurance business. He was a volunteer fireman for Wurtsboro and Washington Heights for about 16 years. Mr. Helm was a member of the Elks in Middletown and in Boulder City, Nev. After moving to Nevada, he worked as a security guard until his illness.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Barbara L. O'Hagan Helm at home; two daughters, Barbara A. and her husband, Jack Geisenheimer of Middletown and Terri Helm of Wurtsboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Helm of Ladson, N.C.; two stepsons and their wives, James and Penny Hawkins and Larry and Marion Hawkins, all of Rochester; a stepdaughter and her husband, Brenda and Carlos Medina of Henderson, Nev.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Deborah Hawkins who died in March of 2003.
Burial was made at The Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev., with a service by the Boulder City Elks and the Military Honor Guard.
Ludmilla T. Raum
Ret. Art Teacher, 90
Ludmilla T. Raum of Kenoza Lake, a retired art teacher at the former Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School and a longtime area resident, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late Stefan and Ludmila Lichner Tuhy, she was born November 29, 1912, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was the widow of George E. Raum.
Mrs. Raum was a member and past financial secretary of the First Lutheran Church of Jeffersonville; the Ladies Aid of the church; an organizing member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the H. Russell Kenyon Post No. 5808, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Callicoon; a member of the Marquette Investors Club and a former 4-H leader.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary-Ellen and Philip Crawford of Mt. Vision; a son and daughter-in-law, Edmund and Anne Devlin Raum of Kenoza Lake; five grandchildren, James Brashear Jr., Barbara Davis, Deborah Hart, Mary Frances Raum and Edmund J. Raum; and four siblings, Mirko, Darina, Cyrill and Philip. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rachel; and seven siblings, E. Zlata, Stefen, Viera, Bohuslav, Ivan, Olga and Natalia.
Services were held Thursday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with Pastor Kristen Anderson officiating.
Burial was made in the Kenoza Lake Cemetery.

Mildred M. DeCroti

Mildred Mary DeCroti of Liberty, a homemaker and a 15-year area resident, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edward and Winifred Farrin Foy, she was born June 25, 1925, in New York City.
Mrs. DeCroti was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Egger of New York City and David DeCroti of Monticello; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Winifred and Will Young of Selma, S. C., Barbara Diane and Ed Bosy of Bethpage, L.I., Mildred Mary and Richard Listwon of Staten Island, Florence Cox of Honesdale, Pa., and Matilda Jean DeCroti of Liberty; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with the Rev. Anthony Kuriakose Mampallil officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.
Mildred Gerler
Homemaker, 92
Mildred Gerler of Wurtsboro died Sunday, September 14, 2003, in Rock Hill. She was 92 years of age.
She was born in New York City and was the widow of Sidney Gerler who died in 1988.
Mrs. Gerler was a volunteer for a number of years at the Ellenville Community Hospital, and was a volunteer at the Ellenville Senior Citizens Center where she assisted in preparing and packing meals for the homebound.
In a family statement, it was said, "She will be remembered for her kind and gentle manner and her especially delicious baked apples. Mildred will be sadly missed by her friends and family and will live in our hearts forever."
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Kantrowitz; three grandchildren, Robert, Norman and Wendy; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Molly and Joshua; a niece and nephew, Susan and Bob Kassman; and two sons-in-law, Leon and Herman.
Graveside services and burial were held Tuesday at the Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.
Jacqueline Podhurst

Jacqueline Podhurst, a longtime resident of Woodridge and a co-owner and operator with her husband, Irving, of White Star Mattress Company in Woodridge, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at her home. She was 64 years of age.
The daughter of the late Samuel and Minnie Mendelson Horowitz, she was born June 23, 1939, in Monticello.
Mrs. Podhurst was a member of Congregation Ohave Sholem Anshei, the Woodridge Synagogue and the Sisterhood of the Synagogue. She was very active in a number of organizations in the local area.
Mrs. Podhurst is survived by her husband, Irving Podhurst, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mindy Nan and Frank Mayer of Cortlandt Manor and Jamie Podhurst and Lewis Abrams of West Orange, N.J; a brother, and sister-in-law, Marvin and Marilyn Horowitz of Rochester; a sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Joseph Messina of Woodridge; four grandchildren, Stefanie Lee, Rachel Chana, Ariel Bess and Adam Robert; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at Congregation Ohave Sholem Anshei, the Woodridge Synagogue with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.
Burial was made in the congregation cemetery in Glen Wild.
Shiva will be at the family home in Woodridge.

Marjorie M. Worner

Marjorie M. Worner of Bloomingburg, a retired telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company and more recently a crossing guard in the Town of Ramapo, a 14-year area resident and a former resident of Rockland County, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at her home. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Purdy Leutholt, she was born March 7, 1911, in Scranton, Pa. She was the widow of Joseph H. Worner.
Mrs. Worner was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by a daughter, Maureen D. Pallone of Bloomingburg; a son, Robert J. Worner of Bloomingburg; a brother, Richard Leutholt of Nanuet; nine grandchildren, Kathleen Altro, Matthew Pallone, Joseph Pallone, David Pallone, Joseph Worner, Troy Worner, Robert Worner, Lawrence Worner and Ilona Lee; a number of great-grandchildren, including Michael, Stephanie, Lisa, Yvonne, Devin, and Nicole; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Katherine Greene and Dorothy McCarroll and two brothers, Frank and Robert Leutholt.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Cornelius, Dodd and Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown.
Interment will be made in the Airmont Lutheran Cemetery in Suffern.

Esther Pat Davis

Esther " Pat" Davis of Monticello, a retired teacher and a longtime resident of Woodridge, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003. at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris after a short illness. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Hyman and Rose Patashnick, she was born September 19, 1913, in New York City.
She moved to Woodridge at the age of six, graduated from the Woodridge High School and State Teacher's College at Albany. She taught for many years at the Woodridge High School and was head of its commercial teaching staff.
In a family statement, it was said, "Pat was a very special lady, who completely supported her husband, children and grandchildren all her life. She was a generous contributor to many charities and animal causes. She loved gardening and during each spring and summer planted and maintained flower gardens on the grounds of their residence. Her children and grandchildren love her dearly and will miss the many conversations and laughter they shared as well as the holidays at Grandma's."
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Monroe Davis, at home; two daughters, Susanne D. and her husband, Fred Cohn, and Amy D. Troyani; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley H. and Susan Davis; three granddaughters, Emily Davis, and Laura and Sara Troyani; a grandson, Joshua Davis; and two brothers, Morris Patashnick and Dr. Jerome Payton.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Congregation Ohave Sholem Anshei, the Woodridge Synagogue with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.
Burial will be made in Congregation Ohave Sholem Anshei, the Woodridge Synagogue Cemetery in Glen Wild.
The family will receive visitors at their residence in Monticello following the services.
