WURTSBORO — April 1, 2003 – Nearly 100 runners attacked the mountain in Saturday’s Wurtsboro Mountain 30K Race.
Amid cool, foggy, rainy conditions, 96 runners finished the second annual event.
The race up, around and down Wurtsboro Mountain was sponsored by the Sullivan Striders running club.
Dave Welsh of Salt Point won the race, completing the course in a time of 1:52:33.
“The first 10K [segment] I ran easy, the second 10K I pushed as hard as I could and the third 10K I went easy,” Welsh said. “This is part of my training for the Grandma Marathon in Minnesota in June.”
Welsh, who is the president of the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club, missed last year’s inaugural event because he was running in another race.
“I really like this course,” he said.
Martha DeGrazia was the first woman to cross the finish line. Her time of 2:27:28 placed her 24th overall.
“I love the race,” DeGrazia said. “I’ll definitely be back next year.”
Race ogranizer Brian Cavanagh was pleased with how well the event went.
“It was helpful that the temperatures were just about perfect,” Cavanagh said. “Temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees celcius, which is between 50 and 60 degrees fahrenheit, is perfect because there is little danger of hypothermia or hyperthermia.”
Cavanagh praised the efforts of finish line manager Steve Holmbraker and the 25 volunteers who helped the race run smoothly. A number of those volunteers were from Nana’s House Child Care Center in Rock Hill.
“Everything went OK,” Cavanagh said. “We had amazing help from all of our volunteers.”
He noted that the race raised between $1,300 and $1,800 for the Sullivan Striders.
