June 3, 2003 Eldred Girls
Overall Record: 0-15
League Record: 0-13 OCIAA Division V
Team Leaders: On a young Eldred team, junior centerfielder Jene Shafer was a key player with a .304 batting average, and sophomore catcher Jessica Cherry posted a .282 average. Sophomore pitcher Meg Shafer recorded 38 Ks for the season.
Season highlight: Despite a losing record, the girls never gave up, said Coach Jolene Porter.
Other comments: The first year varsity coach saw her girls through their modified years and had a good time working with them.
I knew what to expect, she said.
The season started off with challenging games against much larger schools from Orange County Chapel Field and Florida (S.S. Seward) which immediately got the Lady Yellowjackets off to a poor start, Porter said.
When you start a season off with that, thats not much fun, she noted. But you saw improvement as the season went on.
Porter credited the teams defense with some good work. They were controlling the field well, but their bats werent hot enough at the plate.
I think our hitting is what let us down, Porter said. Our offense was not what you want.
But with only one graduating senior on the team, eight girls will return next year to take to the diamond.
