They Blazed a Trail

SMALLWOOD — July 8, 2003 – A total of 150 runners and walkers completed the challenging course Sunday morning at the Smallwood/Mongaup Valley Fire Department’s Fighting Fires 5K.
Ian Parnett of Swan Lake won the race, crossing the finish line in 17.02. He was closely followed by Matt Manzi of Liberty, who posted a time of 17.18. George Shakelton of Hancock ran the course in 17.44 to claim third place.
April Ackermann of Cochecton won the women’s division with a time of 21.06. Judy Stobbe of Bellvale was second in 21.30 and Kathleen Rifkin of Middletown was third in 22.17.

The overall male walker winner was Donald Fassberger of Roscoe. He completed the course in 23.15. The overall female walker winner was Janet O’Hara of South Ozone Park, who posted a time of 36.39.
The 5K run age group winners are as follows:
