Fallsburg Triumphs
Over Roscoe

By Ted Waddell
ROSCOE — September 12, 2003 – After a scoreless first half, the Lady Comets of Fallsburg rallied to score four unanswered goals on their way to defeating the host Roscoe Lady Blue Devils 4-0 in Tuesday’s non-league soccer match.
At 24:50 into the second half, Fallsburg’s Karen Perrello opened the scoring on a penalty kick. She added an unassisted goal at 19:20.
At 13:53, Jamie Cruz fired one past the Roscoe goalie on an assist by Perrello. Jenn Orlowski scored on a one-on-one at 8:04, putting the lid on the first shutout recorded in the scorebooks for a Fallsburg girls’ varsity soccer game.
“It was a good game on both sides,” said Roscoe Coach Cliff Anderson.
Senior Heather Wood anchored the net for Roscoe in the first half. In the second 40 minutes of play, Kassie Brock took over defending the net against all comers.
“Heather had some quality shots on her, and Kassie had excellent shots against her plus a penalty kick,” Anderson said.
According to Anderson, the Lady Blue Devils (0-2) are a very young soccer team, with most of the team comprised of freshmen and sophomores.
Roscoe (0-2) has four returning seniors from last year’s squad – Kim Bingay, who’s playing partially injured, Shannon Bowers, Susie Bowers and Wood.
His prediction for the 2003 soccer season?
“I’m hoping for a 50/50 year,” he said, referring to wins and losses.
For Fallsburg Coach Lee Smassanow, winning isn’t everything.
“It’s always nice to win, but it’s more of a pleasure to watch the teamwork on the field,” he said.
“This game gave us a lot to work with and a lot to work on,” Smassanow added.
The Lady Comets are led by nine returning seniors: Sanya Bici, Carolyn Blanchard, Tabitha Churak, Jessie Friedman, Sarah Halprin, Halley Hiatt, Orlowski, Perrello and Shannon Weigand.
Junior Abby Smassanow is new in the goal cage this year for Fallsburg (1-1).
“She’s really gotten out there and is doing a great job,” Lee Smassanow said.
His take on the 2003 season?
“We’re going to have a lot of fun no matter what happens,” he said.
