JEFFERSONVILLE — September 26, 2003 – The Fallsburg Lady Comets defeated the host Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Division IV volleyball match.
Fallsburg (4-5, 4-1 OCIAA) won the match in three straight games, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19.
In the first game, however, SW (0-9, 0-5 OCIAA) took early leads of 4-3 and 8-5. But a service ace by junior Rachel Feller brought the Lady Comets to within a point at 8-7. A few moments later, Fallsburg’s Shanée Weeks served an ace to knot the score at 9-9. Weeks then added two more aces as the Lady Comets scored five consecutive points to grab a 14-9 lead.
Fallsburg then outscored SW by an 11-4 margin to win the game.
In the second game, the Lady Comets took leads of 12-6 and 14-7. But a service ace by Colleen Metzinger brought the Lady Bulldogs to within 17-15 midway through the game.
However, the visitors responded with an 8-2 run to close out the game.
An ace by Jaclyn Bunch early in the third game gave SW a 3-1 advantage. A kill by Feller tied the score at 5-5 moments later and Fallsburg quickly built an 11-6 lead.
Following a timeout, the Lady Comets extended their lead to 15-6 behind Weeks’ strong serving.
Consecutive service aces later in the game by SW’s Jamie Hert brought her team to within 21-13. But Fallsburg scored four of the next 10 points to close out the match.
Weeks finished with 16 points, six aces and three kills. Rebecca Haber added six points, three assists and three aces, while Feller finished with eight kills, five points and four aces. Kelly Hobby added five points, three kills and two aces for the Lady Comets.
Fallsburg Coach Elisa Baum noted that her team has been playing well lately.
“Some of our losses have gone all five games, so we’re keeping it close,” she said.
Midway through the season, Baum is pleased with her team’s performance and noted that the rest of the season “should be good.”
“The girls work really well together,” she said. “And they have a lot of talent.”
While her team is still searching for its first win, SW Coach Jen Warner was thrilled with the way the Lady Bulldogs performed.
“It’s the best we’ve played this season,” said Warner, whose team is in its first year on the varsity level. “I was happy with our serves, aces and blocks. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Bunch finished with seven points, four aces and a dig, Sarah-Beth Cohen added six points and two aces, Sabrina Reimer had four points, four assists, two blocks, a kill and an ace and Metzinger recorded five blocks, two points, two kills and an ace.
