FALLSBURG — October 7, 2003 – The Cornwall Lady Dragons did not waste any time setting the tone for Friday’s non-league volleyball match versus host Fallsburg.
Cornwall (9-5) stormed out to a 7-0 lead in the first game en route to a 25-13 win. The Lady Dragons then took the second game, 25-20.
Fallsburg (4-8) rallied in game three, however. The Lady Comets took an early 7-2 lead behind a service ace by junior Kelly Hobby and a kill by junior Rachel Feller and went on to win the game, 25-17.
But Cornwall responded in the fourth game. Behind kills by Brittany Gardiner and Brigette O’Keefe, the team grabbed a 16-9 advantage midway through the game. O’Keefe later served two consecutive aces to push the Lady Dragons’ lead to 21-10.
Cornwall went on to win the game, 25-11, and the match, three games to one.
O’Keefe finished the match with 14 points, eight aces, six kills and two digs. Also leading the Lady Dragons to victory were Erika Edsall and Carolyn Gregorck. Edsall recorded nine points, eight kills, five blocks, five digs, four aces and an assist, while Gregorck had 10 kills, six points, five digs and two aces.
“Tonight we did a better job of closing the games,” Cornwall Coach Jeff Moulton said. “We recently lost a match to Monticello where we lost the last three sets. And we had a five set match against Tuxedo that we lost after being up 2-1.”
Pacing the Fallsburg effort were Feller, Hobby and sophomore Shanee Weeks. Feller finished the match with eight points and five kills, while Hobby had eight points, two aces and one kill. Weeks registered five points and five kills.
“Some matches we play well and others we don’t,” Fallsburg Coach Elisa Baum said. “We’re just not consistent. I think we have to work better as a team.”
