ELDRED October 17, 2003 Sometimes one goal is all a team needs to earn a victory.
That was the case on Tuesday afternoon as Livingston Manor recorded a 1-0 win over Eldred in a OCIAA Division VI girls soccer match.
At the 25:45 mark of the first half, Manors Heather Sherwood scored what would become the only goal of the contest. As a crowd of players gathered in front of the net on a corner kick situation, the ball flew toward the Eldred goal cage. Lady Yellowjacket goalie Alli Schombs was able to knock the ball away from the net, but could not grab the ball.
Sherwood was then able to get a foot on the ball, which rolled across the goal line before Schombs could reach back to stop it.
Although Eldred (5-7, 4-4 Division VI) fired nine shots on goal in the second half, all of them went just wide of the goal cage or were stopped by Manor goalie Elizabeth Weickum.
We had opportunites, we just didnt capitalize on them, Eldred Coach Jolene Porter said.
Porter noted that her team has four games left in the regular season and is trying to finish with a record good enough to qualify for the upcoming sectional tournament.
Schombs was credited with 13 saves in the match, while Weickum had 17 saves.
Manor (5-7, 2-6 Division VI) is also trying to end the regular season with victories in its final two matches and qualify for postseason play.
Thats their goal right now, Manor Coach Shirlee Davis said of the possibility of playing in sectionals. It would be nice if we can do that.
Manor was scheduled to play at Roscoe yesterday and host The Family School on Tuesday.
