LAKE HUNTINGTON — December 12, 2003 – The Sullivan West Bulldogs were crowned champions of the 2003 Billy Moran Tip-Off Classic on Tuesday night as they routed the Lions of Chapel Field, 66-38, at Sullivan West High School.
Despite taking a commanding 26-6 lead in the opening period, the Bulldogs apparently thought it was time for a little snooze, as they let the Lions roar in the second quarter. Chapel Field (1-3) outscored SW 14-7 in those eight minutes of play.
However, SW (2-0) held a 33-20 lead at halftime.
In the third period, the Bulldogs woke up to outscore Chapel Field by a 21-8 margin.
Two Bulldogs scored in double figures. Sean Kelly, who was named the tournament MVP, netted a game-high 25 points and Brian Parks had 14 points.
For the Lions, Justin Chiarot scored 15 points and Jacob Miller added 12.
Stats from the free-throw line: SW was 11-of-17 (65 percent), Chapel Field was 10-of-12 (83 percent).
Tabbed for the All-Tournament Team were Justin Chiarot (Chapel Field), Daryl Gros (Chapel Field), Doug Novogrodsky (Fallsburg), Andrew Riegler (Liberty) and Joe Winski (SW).
