Grace M. Nearing
Ret. Court Secy., 82

Grace Marie Nearing of Lake Huntington, a retired secretary to court officials, recording almost 24 years service, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at the Glen Arden Health Care Center in Goshen. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter of the late Fred and Elizabeth Mittan, she was born in White Mills, Pa. She was the widow of Robert A. Nearing Sr.
A graduate of Hawley (Pa.) High School and Benjamin Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pa., she started her career as a secretary for the late County Court Judge Benjamin Newberg in 1960. In 1962, she became the confidential secretary of District Attorney Robert C. Williams and continued to work for him as he was elected Family Court Judge, the designated County Judge and subsequently elected to the Supreme Court bench.
Mrs. Nearing was a member of the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church, a member of St. Tammany Chapter No. 492, Order of the Eastern Star, in Callicoon, and the Republican Club of the Town of Cochecton.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Maryann Nearing of Honesdale, Pa., and Dennis and Carol Nearing of Lake Huntington; a daughter, Linda Nearing, and her husband, Ronald Sharpin of Newton Center, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Todd Nearing of Lake Huntington, Heather Stephens and her husband, Wayne, of Honesdale, Pa., Sean Nearing and his wife, Beret, of Cochecton, Patrick Nearing of Honesdale, Pa., Alyssa Nearing of Levittown, Pa., and Andrew and Christopher Sharpin of Newton Center, Mass.; two great-granddaughters, Libby Stephens and Isabel Nearing; two sisters-in-law, Alma Bischoff and Ann Nearing; a brother-in-law, Roland Nearing; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence "Dutch" Mittan and Carl Mittan, and a sister, Alice Kellam.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Robert McLeod officiating.
Burial was made in the Fosterdale Cemetery.

Grace S. Noble
Dairy Farmer, 73

Grace S. Noble of Honesdale, Pa., who assisted with her husband's business in dairy equipment sales and service at the NobLea dairy farm, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa., after complications from systemic lupus. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late I. Burton and Esther Sluman, she was born in Smith Hill, Pa., on August 6, 1930.
Mrs. Noble was actively involved in the community and devoted to helping others. She was a member of Labor Grange in Calkins, the Beach Lake United Methodist Church, and the Calkins Ladies Aid. She was also a member and past matron of the Harriet Greene Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and had served as a past district deputy.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was an inspiration to all; generous, tender of heart and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed."
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Arthur Hopkins Noble, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Charles Lipsmeyer of San Diego, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Frances Noble of Fairport; four grandchildren, Justin DeMauro, Bake Lipsmeyer, and Matthew and Sara Noble; three sisters, Frances S. Jones of Everett, Wash., Mary S. Fritz of Melbourne, Fla., and Emily S. Hitty of Beach Lake, Pa. She was predeceased by two sisters, Wilma and Ruth.
Services were held Thursday at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weightman officiating.
Burial was made in the Calkins Union Cemetery.

Walter Cavanagh
Ret. Corrections Offc., 65

Walter B. "Wally" Cavanagh of New Port Richey, Fla., a former resident of Jeffersonville and Albany, and retired from the New York State Department of Corrections and Council 82 in Albany in 1995, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, in New Port Richey. He was 65 years of age.
The son of the late Mary and Walter Cavanagh, he was born in the Highbridge Village section of the Bronx on February 25, 1939.
While a resident of Jeffersonville, Mr. Cavanagh was a member of St. George's R.C. Church and taught religious instruction. He was a member of the Jeffersonville Lions Club and president for many years of the Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) at the Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School. An avid union leader while working for Council 82, he received many leadership awards, including the Hollis V. Chase Award.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Cavanagh, at home; three children, Kelli of Smithtown, Michael of Franklin Square and Jennifer of Wappingers Falls; a brother, John Cavanagh of Parksville; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Lloyd Kinney of Latham; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held Friday in New Port Richey, Fla.
Interment of the cremains will be made in the Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 95 Schwenk Dr., Kingston, N.Y. 12401.
Local arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Thomas L. Cuomo, 58

Thomas L. Cuomo of Liberty, a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Mercy Memorial Medical Center in Long Island. He was 58 years of age.
Mr. Cuomo was a Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Army.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a loving husband and father. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends."
He is survived by his wife, Toni Cuomo of Long Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Michael King Sr. of Ferndale; his father-in-law, Espedito Buono of Long Island; a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Beswick, and her companion, Bob Kann of Levittown, L.I.; a niece, Kristin Beswick, and a nephew, Paul Beswick, both of Long Island. He was predeceased by his mother-in-aw, Doris Buono.
Services and burial were private.

Julianne Levi
Ret. Dressmaker, 79

Julianne Levi of Ferndale, a retired dressmaker and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at St. Teresa's Nursing Home in Middletown. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late David and Gertrude Loeb Heyman, she was born February 23, 1925, in Germany. She was the widow of Norbert Levi.
Mrs. Levi is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and David Glick of Middletown; and four grandchildren, Mark, Jack, Jennifer and Joseph. She was predeceased by a son, Frank Levi.
Services were held Wednesday at Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Burial was made in Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Linda L. Miracle
Jewelry Salesman, 61

Linda Lorraine Miracle of Bloomingburg, a jewelry salesman for 10 years and a 20-year area resident, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at her home. She was 61 years of age.
The daughter of the late Dorothy and Charles Lasher, she was born January 26, 1943, in Northvale, N.J.
In a family statement, it was said, "Linda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister whose family was her life. Her family would like to especially thank her friends and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for their wonderful assistance."
She is survived by her husband, Johnnie Miracle, at home; four children and their spouses, Susan and Michael Sturm and John and Diana Miracle, all of Bloomingburg, Sandra and Edwin Benz of Highland Mills, and Luther Miracle of Bloomingburg; four grandchildren, Amanda and Courtney Miracle and Charlie and Kassandra Sturm; several nieces and nephews; and her siblings and their spouses, Shirley and Calvin Kampff of Kerhonkson, Charles and Debra Lasher of Northvale, N.J., Louise and Richard Tobin of the state of Florida and Rosemarie Bouton of Connecticut. She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Pauline King.
Services were held Thursday at the Morse Funeral Home in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Bloomingburg Cemetery.

Ann S. Black
Homemaker, 94

Ann Schwalb Black of Annapolis, Md., a longtime resident of Liberty and Boca Raton, Fla., died Monday, May 10, 2004, in Annapolis. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late Fanny and Samuel Feldman, she was born April 22, 1910, in New York City. She was the widow of Samuel Schwalb to whom she was married 49 years before his death.
Mrs. Black was a member of Hadassah, B'nai B'rith and was an active participant in all the communities that she lived in.
She is survived by her husband, Sanford S. Black; three daughters, Madeline Cole of Annapolis, Md., Phyllis Luts and her husband, Ralph, of Poughkeepsie, and Francine Phillips of Poughkeepsie; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Schwalb of Liberty; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Peggy Feldman of Mount Vernon; 18 grandchildren, including Dr. Richard Schwalb and his wife, Wendy, of Jeffersonville; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Dr. Alan Schwalb, two grandchildren, and two sisters, Rebe Richlin and Dorette Unger.
Services were held Wednesday at Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Burial was made in Congregation Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dutchess County or Sullivan County SPCA, the latter located at Rock Hill Dr., Rock Hill, N.Y. 12775.

Graveside services and burial of the cremains of Virginia Donnolly, a former resident of Cochecton who died April 25, 2004, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Hortonville Cemetery with the Rev. Veronica Ostrowska officiating.
Arrangements were made by the Murphy-Stewart Funeral Home of Callicoon.

Dr. Carmen Elia
Ret. Dentist, 90

Dr. Carmen A. Elia of Middletown and Wanaksink Lake and a practicing dentist for 51 years in Middletown, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Park Manor Residential Rehabilitation Facility in Middletown. He was 90 years of age.
The son of the late Vincenzo and Viola Poli Elia, he was born Nvember 17, 1913, in Middletown.
Dr. Elia was a graduate of Middletown High School and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.
He was a member of several dental societies, a lifetime member and past Exalted Ruler of Middletown Elk Lodge #1907, a member of Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, a member of the Honorable Kentucky Colonels and a member of the Wanaksink Lake Association.
Dr. Elia was a World War II veteran of the 1st Marine Division where he served as a Lt. Commander and was the recipient of the Guadalcanal Patch and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Middletown.
He is survived by his wife, June Miller Elia, at home; four children and their spouses, Mary Jane and David Petelinz of Middletown, Susan and Dr. M.K. Menon of Cape Coral, Fla., and Wanaksink Lake, Dr. James P. and Marlene Elia of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Linda Lewis of Indian Rock Beach, Fla. six grandchidren, Sheila Scheinderman, Jennifer Clearwaters, Sean Menon, Logan Elia, Maxwell Elia, and Alexander Lewis; and two great-granddaughters, Jordyn and Sydnie Schneiderman. He was predeceased by a sister, Theresa "Daisy" E. Bergamo, and a brother, Vincent Eia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 149 Cottage St., Middletown.
Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Middletown.

Frank Calabria Jr.
Ret. Supervisor, 85

Frank Calabria Jr. of Port Jervis, a retired supervisor of Novelty Slipper Co. and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Bon Secours Cmmunity Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Josephine Aragona Caabria Sr, he was born May 6, 1919, in Port Jervis.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Ardennes, Rhineland, Central European Theatre of Operations and received two Purple Hearts and a Meritorious Unit Award. He was a member of Roosa-Fleming Post No. 161, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Port Jervis.
Mr. Calabria was a life member of Musician's Union Local N. 248 of Paterson, N.J. He studied trumpet in New York City and at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. In the 1930s he played trumpet with the Sal DeFeo Band and after being discharged from the Army, had his own band called the 5 Cs, playing in the 1940s '50s and '60s.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sweeney Calabria, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Cheryl Calabria of Glen Spey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Carl Decker of Greenville Township and Judy and Kevin Young of Digman's Ferry, Pa.; four grandchildren, Michae Calabria of Glen Spey, Ceann Miedema of Greenville Township, Emily Rink of Sparrowbush and Graham MacDonald of Binghamton; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a grandson, Donald C. Decker.
Services wil be held at 10:15 a.m. at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's R.C. Church with the Rev. Dennis M. Dinan officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Jervis.

Charles Kynard Sr.
Ret. Foreman, 67

Charles W. "Rebe" Kynard Sr. of Bethel, a former resident of Highland Mills and a retired foreman for Ford Motor Company in Mahwah, N.J., died Monday, May 10, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He was 67 years of age.
The son of the late Emmett L. and Lonnie Elizabeth Cobb Kynard, he was born January 12, 1937, in Selma, Ala.
Mr. Kynard was a member of American Legion Post #488 in Monroe and a former longtime-employee of Freeman's Service Station in Highland Mills.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Beach Kynard of Slate Hill; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Jacqueline Metakes of Middletown and Charles W. Jr. and Ann-Marie Kynard of Highland Mills; five daughters, Glenda and her husband, William Russell, of Middletown, Susan Rutkowski of Winter Haven, Fla., Deanna Brickley of Slate Hill, Charlene and her husband, Kevin Hintze, of Middletown and Cheryl and her husband, Jeff Piche, of Pine Bush; a brother, Elmer Kynard of Selma, Ala.; four sisters, Bernice Gill, Frances Bowden, Mary Moore and Hazel Ingram, all of Selma, Ala.; his companion, Theresa Scheriff of Bethel; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Emmett, Billy and Coolidge Kynard.
Friends may call at the Smith, Seaman and Quackenbush Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
American Legion services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Betty Beach officiating.
Burial will be made in the Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen.

James McGuinness
Ret. Oper. Engr., 77

James "Red" McGuinness of Goshen, an operating engineer for Local 825 and a former resident of Liberty, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Orange County Residential Health Care Faciity in Goshen. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Patrick J. Sr. and Mary Foran McGuinness, he was born August 24, 1926, in Cornwall.
Mr. McGuinness was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion, both in Liberty.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Margaret McGuinness, Elizabeth McGuinness, Patrick McGuinness, all of Maryland, Eileen Tracy of Marlboro, Jeanne Barnes of the state of Florida, Anne Ferris of Cornwall, Daniel McGuinness, Michael McGuinness, Kevin McGuinness, Patrick McGuinness of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Joseph Kerry McGuinness Sr. and Michael B. McGuinness, both of Cornwall; and a brother, Patrick McGuinness Sr. of Cornwall. He was predeceased by two brothers, John McGuinness and Joseph McGuinness; a sister, Claire Hager; and a nephew, Mark McGuinness.
Friends may call at the Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on- Hudson on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Cornwall-on-Hudson with the Rev. Bernard P. Heter officiatng.
Burial will be made in St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

Kenneth Gulotta Sr.
Frm. Trainer/Driver, 64

Kenneth Robert "Rocky" Gulotta Sr. of Monticello, a former trainer and driver of standard bred horses for the Monticello Raceway, died Wednesay, May 12, 2004, at his home. He was 64 years of age.
The son of the late Giuseppie and Rose DeBiase Gulotta, he was born August 20, 1939, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Gulotta was a former member of the Monticello Raceway's Harness Horsemen's Association, the Knights of Columbus and St. Peter's Church of Monticello.
In a family statement, it was said, "Kenneth was a loving father who always said thank you for loving me to his children. He was not only a husband, father, grandfather or great-grandfather, he was a great friend."
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan Carol Bate Gulotta, at home; two sons, Kenny Jr. and Johnny, both of Pennsylvania; two daughers, Gloria Romano-Gulotta and her husband, Matthew, of Pennsylvania, and Donna Gulotta of Neversink; a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Nicky Marotta of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, Patricia "Treesh," Deana "Didi" and Jordyn; a great-grandson, Chase; and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Church in Monticello.
Burial will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

Russell Rhones
Retired Chef, 83

Russell N. Rhones of Elenville, a retired chef for the Granite and Tamarack Hotels, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the Elenville Regional Hospital. He was 83 years of age.
The son of the late Sank and Lucy Rhones, he was born June 27, 1920, in Newark, N.J.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Post #0001 of the American Legion in Albany.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Smith, at home; a daughter, Elizabeth Rhones of Virginia; and a grandson, Hajhel Smith of Monticelo.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Loucks Funeral Home, Route 209, Eenvile.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Ida J. Weston
Homemaker, 86

Ida J. Weston of Hampton Bays, a homemaker, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, She was 86 years of age.
An active volunteer, Ida most enjoyed working with her friends at the United Methodist Church of Hampton Bays Thrift Shop.
In a family statement, it was said, "Her smiling face and kindness will be missed."
She is survived by four children, William G. Weston of Liberty, Robert J. Weston and his wife, Maria, of Waxahachie, Tex, Anne L. Dosch and her husband, Franz, of Southampton, and Susan E. Grady and her husband, Martin of Lake George; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica and Robert Weston, Gavin and Collin Grady and Kurt and April Dosch; a brother, Justus Asthalter of Parksville and; a sister, Wilma Bonnel of Liberty.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Hampton Bays with the Rev. George Mangan, pastor of the church, officiating.
Burial was made in the Good Ground Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East End Hospice or to the Hampton Bays United Methodist Church.
