Ethel I. Stewart
Homemaker, 80

Ethel I. Stewart of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, November 21, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Leona C. Husch, she was born August 5, 1924, in Livingston Manor.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty, the Liberty Senior Citizens and a former member of the Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps where she served as secretary for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert P. Stewart, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Virginia Stewart of Pine City; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Jack McAuley of Yulan, Frances Stewart of Woodridge and Susan and James DeCastro of West Islip; six grandchildren, Robert W. Stewart, Mark A. McAuley, Theresa Stewart, Melanie Hansen, William DeCastro and Matthew DeCastro; three great-grandchildren, Haylie McAuley, Calob Stewart and Jack Hansen; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty, South Main St., Liberty, with the Rev. Linda Bohs officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty, South Main St., or to the Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 105, both at Liberty, N.Y. 12754.

Doris M. Holmes, 78
Owned Canal Emporium

Doris M. Holmes of Wurtsboro, the owner and creator of the Canal Towne Emporium in Wurtsboro, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at her home. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Peter and Margaret Petersen Holland, she was born September 8, 1926, in Levittsburgh, Ohio. She was the widow of Lyman O. Holmes who died May 5, 2001.
Mrs. Holmes was a member of the Community Church of Wurtsboro as well as numerous groups and organizations throughout Sullivan County. She and her store have won many awards and recognitions throughout the years.
She is survived by two sons, Lyman R. Holmes and his wife, Linda, of Wurtsboro, and Gary L. Holmes of Rock Hill; a brother, Charles Holland of Syracuse; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Carolyn and Kevin; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Eugene Holland, and three sisters, Betty Holland, Norma Stoddard and Martha Lee Poley.
Services were held Monday at the Community Church in Wurtsboro.
Burial was made in the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro

Neill E. Alenky
Bail Bondsman, 55

Neill Edwin Alenky of Forestburgh, a self-employed bail bondsman, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 55 years of age.
The son of Elaine Lerner Alenky and the late Gilbert "Gil" Alenky, he was born June 20, 1949, in Monticello.
He is survived by his mother of Forestburgh; a daughter, Devin Alenky of New Paltz; a brother, Keith Alenky of Charlotte, N.C.; and his former wife, Joyce.
Firematic services at the cemetery were followed by graveside services and burial on Sunday at the Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello with Cantor Michael Sturm officiaitng.

Michael DePaolo
Ret. Hosp. Wkr., 85

Michael DePaolo of Jeffersonville, a retired hospital worker and an area resident since 1963, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Achieve Rehab Center in Liberty. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Carmine and Christina Zambelli DePaolo, he was born May 13, 1919, in Newark, N.J.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of St. Francis Church in Youngsville.
He is survived by his wife, Pierina "Perry" Fraenza DePaolo, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Carmine and Lori DePaolo, and a grandson, Corey Depaolo, all of New Castle, Colo. He was predeceased by three brothers Tony, Alfred and Frank, and by two sisters, Fannie and Anna.
A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Francis Church in Youngsville.
Burial will be made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Sgt. Catalin Dima
U.S. Army, 36

Sgt. Catalin D. Dima of White Lake, a member of the 411th Engineer Brigade of the U.S. Army, died in the service of his country on Saturday, November 13, 2004, in Baghdad, Iraq. He was 36 years of age.
The son of Christina Dima and the late Ino Dima, he was born June 13, 1968, in Calarasi, Romania.
He came to New York City in 1996 and moved with his wife to Sullivan County in 1999, not wanting to raise his children in the city.
Shortly after September 11, 2001, he entered the U.S. Army Reserves because of his great love for his new country. He had served in the Romanian Army and was familiar with military service. He was working as a truck driver for Central Pet Supply in New Jersey when he was mobilized with his reserve unit. In October 2004, he was awarded U.S. Citizenship.
He was promoted to sergeant in October 2004 in recognition of his patriotism, valor and fidelity, as well as his demonstrated leadership potential and dedicated service. Sgt. Dima received many military decorations including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
In a family statement, it was said, "Sgt. Dima was a hard working family man and a dedicated soldier who will be greatly missed by family, friends, fellow citizens and fellow soldiers."
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Florika Zgrda Dima, two sons, Christian Dima and John Peter Dima, and a daughter, Angela Maria Dima, all at home; his mother and a brother, Bogdan Dima, both of Romania; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the White Lake Reformed Presbyterian Church, Route 17B, White Lake, with Fr. Dimitry Musta officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake.

Andrzej Milewski
Carpenter, 42

Andrzej Milewski of Barryville, a five-year area resident and a self-employed carpenter, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at his home. He was 42 years of age.
The son of Peter and Jozefa Pietraszewska Milewski, he was born June 3, 1962, in Tarnow, Poland.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Frytc Milewski of Chicago, Ill.; his parents of Barryville; two sons, Robert Milewski and Bart Milewski, both of Chicago, Ill; two brothers, Peter Milewski and Bogy Milewski, both of Poland; a sister, Lidia Carlos of Belgium; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, 3412 Route 97, Barryville, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Yulan with the Rev. Anthony Moore officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred.

Thelma F. Potter
Ret. Housekeeper, 70

Thelma Felicia Potter of Woodridge, a retired housekeeper and former presser for Murry's Dry Cleaning in South Fallsburg, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, in South Fallsburg. She was 70 years of age.
The daughter of the late Daniel and Rebecca Frasier Mitchell, she was born March 26, 1934, in Charleston, S.C.
Mrs. Potter was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fallsburg where she was active in the senior choir. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons, Samuel Simmons of Orange, N.J., and Daniel Mitchell of Fayetteville, NC.; two daughters, Jacqueline Mitchell of Hurleyville and Letanya Potter of South Fallsburg; five brothers, Edward Mitchell of Charleston, S. C., William Mitchell of Key West, Fla., Leroy Mitchell of Dallas, Tex., Jesse Mitchell of Tampa, Fla., and Teddy Simmons of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Nancy Gamble of Woodridge, Betty Mack and Sally Mitchell, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Fallsburg with the Rev. Anthony Black officiating
Burial will be made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangments were made by the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.

James Scott, 79
Ret. Chief of Operations

James Scott of Ferndale, a retired chief of operations for Axelrod Mangement Co. - Real Estate Development of New York City, and a 15-year area resident, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late James and Betty Smith Scott, he was born June 9, 1925, in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Scott was a member of the Friendshp Baptist Church in Ferndale.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Joan Middleton Scott, at home; five sons and two daughters-in-law, James Jr. and Millie Scott of West Orange, N.J., Zachary Scott of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mark and Michelle Scott of Montclair, N.J., Tracy Scott of Middletown, N.J., and Robert Scott of Montclair, N.J.; a daughter, Makeda Scott of Meridian, Miss.; 12 grandchildren, David, Janice, Devon, Erica, Travis, Natasha, Sabrina, Christopher, Christian, Mia, Tiffany and Mark James; a great-grandson, Jaylen; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Fallsburg, Main Street, Fallsburg, with the Rev. Willie Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J.

Anna Letvenko
Ret. Seamstress, 93

Anna Letvenko of Monticello, a retired seamstress and a longtime area resident, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Wasyl and Cathyrine Cap Hadupiak, she was born June 6, 1911, in Scranton, Pa. She moved to the Ukraine a short time later where she was raised. She was the widow of Steve Letvenko.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary Letvenko of Doylestown, Pa.; two grandchildren, William S. Letvenko and Maryann Franco; and two great-grandchildren, Agelina Franco and Valerie Letvenko.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home. 401 Broadway, Monticello, on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the Warwick Cemetery.

Lydia Bennett, 65

Lydia Bennett of Monticello, a longtime area resident, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at the Albany Medical Center. She was 65 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Lydia Kirkwood, she was born February 14, 1939, in Riverhead.
She is survived by a sister, Ellen Catron of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; three cousins, Linda Shaton, David Kirkwood and Katherine Kirkwood, all of Ellicott City, Md.; and all her friends at the Sullivan County ARC.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello, on Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.

Frieda K. Fisher
Homemaker, 92

Frieda Krauspe Fisher of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, November 21, 2004, at her home after a short illness. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Reinhold and Pauline Krauspe, she was born April 20, 1912, in New York City. She was the widow of Carlyle P. Fisher who died August 5, 1975.
Mrs. Fisher was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liberty and the Liberty Belles, a unit of the Sullivan County Cooperative Extension.
In a family statement, it was said, "Frieda's first love was china painting which she did right up to the time of death."
She is survived by a son, Stephen Fisher of Liberty; a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and John Sawchuk of Grahamsville; five grandchildren, John Sawchuk of Swan Lake, Cynthia McKenna of Grahamsville, Cody Fisher of Callicoon, Wade Sawchuk of Liberty ad Jill Petrocci of North Carolina; two great-grandchildren, Margaret "Maggie" Sawchuk and Kane Sawchuk; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Carlyle Fisher, and a daughter, Diane Alventosa.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Liberty Cemetery with the Rev. Audrey Pedersen officiating.
