A True Honor
For Bowlers

By Ed Townsend
SULLIVAN COUNTY — January 2, 2004 – All bowlers, individually or through teams, leagues, and associations, are being asked to honor a military man or woman – active duty or veteran, living or deceased – to recognize their service to our country.
This campaign is presented by the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), with 60 years of service to America’s military.
Participation in Operation Honor Force is easy. An individual or group simply chooses a level of contribution and makes a donation in the honoree’s name.
Honorees could be a teammate, relative, friend or someone in the community who has served our country or is on active duty. The name of the honored service man or woman is posted on the BVL Web site and a note acknowledging the contribution is sent to the honoree or his or her family.
Contributing individuals or groups have an opportunity to also share why they selected their honoree.
In 1942, the sport of bowling organized BVL and made a promise to our nation’s military men and women that we won’t forget them. Since then, that commitment has been cemented with more than $30 million to support hundreds of recreational and therapeutic programs and services for active duty military, veterans and their families.
Funds collected through Operation Honor Force will continue these on-going programs.
For more information about donating, please call (301) 881-8333 or visit www.bowlforveterans.org and click on Operation Honor Force.
Contributions can be mailed to The Bowlers to Veterans Link, Operation Honor Force, P. O. Box 2289, Rockville, MD 20847.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: The tip this week should help bowlers of all ages and abilities to be more consistent with their bowling shots.
In past tips I have covered the arm swing and the importance of keeping it loose and free of any tension. This will always be very important and is a must if you want to repeat your shots.
But I see many bowlers start out with a good swing and at the last second accelerate their swing at the release point and ruin what could have been a good shot.
You must be patient and let the gravity swing the ball through the release zone and have the ball roll down the lane. If you accelerate your arm at the release point, it will cause you to hold on to the ball too long and either come over the top of the ball and pull it to the left (or to the right for you lefties) or have the ball skid to the right with little or no rotation.
If you have a chance, watch both the professional men and ladies bowl on TV – you can learn a lot from observing them.
Mike Luongo is technically certified through IBPSIA and is a Silver Level Coach with USA Bowling. He is also the Northeast Technical Advisor for the Morich Bowling Ball Company (Morich Enterprises, Inc.). If you have a question or subject you would like covered, he can be reached at 341-1694 or via e-mail at mikespro@warwick.net.
