Celebrating National
Student-Athlete Day

MONTICELLO — April 6, 2004 – A total of 58 student-athletes were honored on Friday by the Monticello Central School District.
To celebrate National Student-Athlete Day, the pupils received awards for excelling in both their academic and athletic pursuits. National Student Athlete Day is actually celebrated today (April 6), but the district recognized these student-athletes last Friday because school is closed this week due to the Passover and Easter holidays.
Monticello Central School Athletic Director Ken Garry organized the awards ceremony, which was held at Buona Fortuna Ristorante in Monticello. He described the students who were being recognized as “quality kids in all respects.”
Two members of each varsity team and one member from each jayvee and modified team were selected for the honors. To be chosen, each athlete needed to receive a nomination from their coach and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0.
Monticello High School Principal William Stickney, who is retiring at the end of the year, called the students “a great group of kids who are well- rounded student-athletes.”
Superintendent Eileen Casey told the students that they “brought pride to the school district.”
