WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS July 23, 2004 In Monday nights Sullivan County Womens Softball League B Division game between Mr. Willys and The Nugget Restaurant, Mr. Willys topped the designated home team, 20-5.
Mr. Willys led off with seven runs in the opening inning.
The Nugget battled back in the bottom of the first with four runs to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Then Mr. Willys went on a scoring rampage. The team added five runs in the second and recorded one each in the third and fourth before sending six runners across the plate in the top of the fifth.
Before the game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning because of the leagues 15-run mercy rule, The Nugget sent one batter home to close out the scoring at 20-5.
It was a good game, said Erin Brown, who is team captain for The Nugget. We played some hard defense, but made a few errors.
The Nugget took to the field minus some key players and their coach Ed Wheat, who was out on an emergency call.
We fended for ourselves, Brown said.
Last year, The Nugget finished the season in first place in the B Division.
This year, were looking at third [place], Brown commented. Were playing hard and enjoying ourselves.
Chrissy Schiff, who is the captain of the Mr. Willys team and the President of the Sullivan County Womens Softball League, said a lot of singles, doubles and a few triples paved the way to victory.
The first three-base hit of the evening for Mr. Willys was recorded by Beth The Great Cogswell.
Everybody hit great, Schiff said. It was a good game, and we have a great bunch of girls.
