ROCK HILL November 12, 2004 Dozens of runners and walkers from Sullivan County as well as nearby counties descended upon Rock Hill last Saturday morning.
Despite an early morning chill, those athletes eagerly took to the course for the fourth annual Falling Colors 8K Run/5K Walk.
A total of 131 runners and 46 walkers completed the event, which was sponsored by the Sullivan Striders Running Club.
Raymond Revell of Campbell Hall won the 8K run in a time of 28 minutes, 12 seconds.
Finishing second in 28:23 was George Shakelton of Hancock. Franz Schulten of Greenville placed third in 30:19.
I felt good, Revell said. It was nice that the last mile was downhill.
Both Revell and Shakelton noted the last mile was where Revell was able to surge ahead and record his 11-second victory.
I stayed with him for about three and three-quarter miles, said Shakelton, who coaches the girls cross country team at Sullivan West. That last mile was downhill and I thought I could catch him with my long legs but I didnt.
(Shakelton stands over six feet tall.)
Still, Shakelton noted that the 8K course was a nice, fast course.
In the womens 8K run, 15-year-old Carolyn Gates of Washingtonville crossed the finish line first. Her time was 33:35.
Katherine Chawner of Pine Bush was second in 34:42 and Edna Harrison of New Paltz placed third with a time of 36:02.
I liked it, there were a lot of hills, said Gates, who is a sophomore at Washingtonville High School and a member of the schools cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. It was a lot of fun.
Gates said the enjoyed running the hills because she lives near a steep hill and is used to training on that incline. She also spoke highly of her cross country coach, Charlie Delmonico.
He has really helped me a lot, Gates said.
The first participant to cross the finish line in the 5K walk was Shawn Frederick of Newburgh. He completed the course in 27:06.
Bob Barrett, a resident of Smallwood, was second in 29:33. Ross Grasso of New Rochelle took third place in a time of 36:41.
Wurtsboro resident Kim Nonenmacher won the womens 5K walk in a time of 31:49. Lenore Smith of Liberty (38:09) and Christie Johaneman (41:08) of Livingston Manor finished second and third, respectively.
Nonenmacher, who is a member of the Sullivan Striders, designed the t-shirts for the event. She also made plaques for five club members who worked very hard to put on the race. Those plaque recipients were Kelly Desmond, Alice Duffy, Debbie LaBounty, Maryann Manza and Dennis Tuscano.
Following the race, an awards ceremony was held at the Emerald Green clubhouse.
Instead of traditional trophies, the top three runners in each age group received a small Alberta Spruce tree.
Sullivan Striders Running Club President Tom Manza thanked all of the participating runners and walkers as well as all of the volunteers and major sponsors of the event. Among those sponsors were Gusars Pharmacy, Old Homestead Restaurant and Time Warner Cable.
Both Manza and race director Dennis Tuscano were both pleased with how well the event went.
There were no significant problems and the weather was great, Tuscano said. Im really pleased we had so many participants and volunteers.
