LOCH SHELDRAKE — November 19, 2004 – The Generals gave the Senators a civics lesson.
On Tuesday night “Down in the Bunker” at Sullivan County Community College’s (SCCC) Paul Gerry Fieldhouse, the host Generals pounded the Senators of Ulster County Community College (UCCC), 119-43.
At the half, the Generals were up by 47 points (68-21).
But in the final 20 minutes of competition, SCCC Coach Chris DePew, who is in his seventh year, showed some mercy by rotating his bench onto the floor, a factor that contributed to a more respectable 51-22 margin in the second half.
It was “Dalmatian Time” for the Generals, they let the dogs out to make it a 101-43 game with 8:20 left on the game clock.
On the floor, the Generals were led by a trio of returning sophomore captains: Jon Bentley, Ghiles Jackson and Greg Primus.
Seven SCCC hoopsters reached double digits in the scoring column: Jamal Raphael (17), Everage Richardson (17), Greg Johnson (16), Jon Frasier (14), Bentley (13), Kevin Johnson (11) and Kelvin Nelson (10).
For UCCC, Anthony Wenzel netted a team-high 10 points.
In other game stats, Raphael led the Generals with nine offensive rebounds and eight defensive rebounds. Kevin Johnson was the top recruit with six assists and four steals.
SCCC was 9-for-23 (39 percent) at the free throw line, while UCCC went 15-for-28 (54 percent).
A quick peek at the foul stats showed that with a total of 51 fouls called, the game seemed to stretch on into the next morning.
In the wake of the NJCAA Region XV game, the Generals remained undefeated (2-0), while the Senators were still winless (0-6).
According to the 2004-2005 NJCAA Division III pre-season men’s basketball poll that was released on October 20, SCCC was ranked seventh nationally based upon last season’s final record of 26-6.
“I lost a couple of my starters in the game, and they are a tough team,” UCCC Coach Corey Chambers said.
DePew said, “When you win with a score like that, you’ve got to be pretty happy… we’re deep and we showed we’re deep, we played everybody tonight.
“We consistently ran the score,” he added. “The guys stepped up to the plate.”
DePew added that UCCC is a team that is trying to build a program with a new coach and a lot of fledgling players.
“They’re kind of learning the ropes,” he said.
