Richard B. Porter
Ret. Carpet Installer, 77

Richard B. Porter of Hurleyville, a retired carpet installer of 43 years for D & M Furniture in Ellenville and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Edo and Lula Terwilliger Porter, he was born June 4, 1927, in the Town of Thompson.
A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army in Japan and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He studied farming in his 1st Calvary Brigade School in Camp McGill, Japan and was then assigned to the distinguished 5th Calvary Regiment as a supply sergeant in Service Troop. He received a Victory Medal.
In a family statement, it was said, "After retiring, he did side carpet jobs and kept busy working on his house and in his garden. Mr. Porter enjoyed getting together with family and friends, often challenging a game of pool. His home was open to many friends and even strangers who had no place else to go, giving them food and shelter and helping them until they could get on their feet. Everyone he met became a cherished friend. He will be missed by those who knew him."
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Mudge Porter, at home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles and Mun Porter of Lantana, Fla., Gary and Theresa Porter of Woodbourne and Robert Porter of Spruce Pine, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Lou and Ken Keener of Hurleyville; two brothers, Raymond and Cliff Porter; three sisters, Eleanor Nieman and Eloise Porter, both of Hurleyville, and Dot Messinger of Cody, Wyo.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Douglas, Bernard and Stan Porter.
Services were held Saturday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Interment was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery.

Lawrence Gleich
Ret. Office Mgr., 87

Lawrence "Larry" Gleich of South Fallsburg, a lifelong area resident and the retired office manager for A. Alport & Sons in South Fallsburg, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Gussie and Charles Gleich, he was born December 5, 1917, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Gleich was a graduate of the Fallsburg High School and was a member of the South Fallsburg Synagogue for many years.
A World War II veteran, he served as a corporal with the 7th Armored Division of the United States Army and served overseas.
He volunteered countless hours with his wife, Frances, at the Sullivan County ARC Rose Valley, where they both were honored as Volunteers of the Year in 1996. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for the Sullivan County Office for the Aging and served on the Board of the Senior Citizen Legislative Committee. Mr. Gleich received many awards and citations commemorating the time and effort he spent volunteering.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Gleich, at home; three children, Stuart and his wife, Mary Gleich, of Monticello, Lucy Gleich Rothman of New Paltz and Paula Seigal of Poughkeepsie; three grandchildren, David Rothman of Albany, Marleen and her husband, Brent Schwartz, of Berlin, N.J., and Allison and her husband, Peter Hilliard, of Roslyn, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Schwartz and Elizabeth, Nicholas and Jonathan Hilliard; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty on Friday with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Julia Blaine, 99
Ret. Hotel Emply.

Julia Blaine of South Fallsburg, a former employee of Mr. Sussman at the Windsor Hotel, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at the Achieve Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Liberty. She was 99 years of age.
The daughter of the late Jimmy and Elizabeth Blaine, she was born November 11, 1905, in Baltimore, Md. She was the widow of Hammie Royster.
She moved to Mt. Claire, N.J. with her mother and in 1948 became a resident of Sullivan County.
She is survived by a niece, Edna Coleman; a nephew, Jerome; and seven other nieces, Beatrice, Bertha, Frances, Olivia, Florence, Myrtle and Mary. She was predeceased by a special friend, Joseph A. Kearn, and eight sisters, Beatrice, Bertha, Frances, Olivia, Florence, Myrtle, Edna and Mary.
Services were held Saturday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne with the Rev. Anthony Black officiating.
Interment was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery.

Ruth Rumsey, 82
Ret Short Order Cook

Ruth Rumsey of Bloomingburg, a longtime area resident and a retired 25-year short order cook for the Quickway Diner in Bloomingburg, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harold and Enid Scott, she was born December 23, 1922, in Livingston Manor.
In a family statement, it was said, "Ruth was always a diligent person and hard worker. She was talented with her hands and enjoyed making crafts for her and her family. She will be forever missed by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, and her faithful companion, Fluffy."
She is survived by her husband, Adrian Rumsey, at home; a son, Harold W. Hauschild; a daughter, Bonnie Hauschild and her companion, Mitchell Peck; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Mitchell, Bill and Beth; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother and three sisters.
A Service of Remembrance was held Monday at the Applebee- McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown with the Rev. Ken Wonderland officiating.
Burial was made in the family plot in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

David G. McCabe
Ret. Laborer, 71

David G. McCabe of Callicoon Center, a retired laborer for the New York City Board of Water Supply, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late John and Veronica Wahl McCabe, he was born October 29, 1933, in Brooklyn.
Mr. McCabe was a member of St. Mary's Church in Obernburg. He was a member and past president of the Callicoon Center Band. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was a member of the Emmett Turner Post #276, American Legion, in Jeffersonville and the Allan Milk Memorial Post No. 7276, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Long Eddy. He was also a longtime high school basketball referee.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Newman McCabe, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Linda McCabe of Callicoon Center; a daughter, Kelly McCabe of Avon, Conn.; a granddaughter, Colleen McCabe; three brothers, John McCabe of West Milford, N.J., Edward McCabe of San Antonio, Tex., and Kevin McCabe of Brooklyn; a sister, Catherine Beal of Washingtonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Obernburg at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Burial will be made in the Callicoon Center Cemetery.

Louise J. Morris, 77

Louise J. Morris of Monticello, a 20-year area resident and a retired telephone operator with the New York Telephone Co. in Monticello, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at her home. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of Anna Phillips Morris and the late Fred Morris, she was born February 18, 1928, in Hornell.
Miss Morris was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, the Monticello Senior Citizens and the Kingston Chapter of Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by her mother of Hornell; a brother, Fred Morris and his wife, Elizabeth, of Adams Center; a sister, Dorothy Graham and her husband, Jack, of Hornell; and two nieces, Sarah Goodenbery and Laura Morris.
Graveside services and burial will be held at the Rural Cemetery in Hornell on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Josephine F. Green
Ret. Postal Wkr., 92

Josephine F. Green of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., a retired postal worker and former resident of Woodbourne, died Saturday, March 5, 2005. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Anthony and Margaret Hartman, she was born July 28, 1912, in Woodbourne. She was the widow of Kenneth Green.
Mrs. Green is survived by two daughters, Mary Zagacki of Pembroke Pines, Fla, and Patricia Harris of Weston, W. Va.; four sons, Dr. James K. Green of Monticello, Joseph Green of New Hope Village, Ernest Green of Albany and Daniel Green of Glens Falls; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered March 9, 2005, at St. David's Church in Davie, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne at a later time.

Howard Gildersleeve
Laborer, 77

Howard "Sonny" Gildersleeve of Mountaindale, a laborer, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, in Liberty. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Howard and Olga Ackerley Gildersleeve, he was born April 19, 1927, in Ferndale.
He was a member of AARP and NRA.
In a family statement, it was said, "Howard was a way cool guy. He was just a great guy and very quick witted. He loved games of chance and was very competitive. He was a good farmer who enjoyed making maple syrup, canning and pickling food. He was a great laborer and hard worker. He was an avid hunter and fisherman."
He is survived by his longtime companion/ex-wife, Marlene Ross, and their daughter, Serena Gildersleeve of Liberty; the mother of his children and friend, Anne Davis of Neversink, and their four children and their spouses, Carol and Jim Houghtaling of Willowemoc, Howard and Karen Gildersleeve of Neversink, Michael and Karen Gildersleeve of Unadilla and Olga Avery of Neversink; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Gildersleeve, and a sister, Carmela Hitt.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Woodbourne Reformed Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

Denise A. Fisher
Supervisor, 46

Denise A. Fisher of Barryville, a supervisor for the Eldred Preserve Restaurant in Eldred and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in the Town of Lumberland in an automobile accident. She was 46 years of age.
The daughter of Kenneth and Florence Comiskey Thornton, she was born March 19, 1958, in Norfolk, Va.
She is survived by her husband, David K. Fisher; two sons, Brian Fisher of Middletown and Kevin Fisher of Barryville; a daughter, Erin Amato and her husband, Chuck, of Barryville; her parents of Port Jervis; a sister and brother-in-law, Lori and Bill Acton of Sparrowbush; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Donna Thornton of Barryville and Daniel and Mary Thornton of Brenham, Tex.; her maternal grandmother, Emily Comiskey of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Beatrice Amato, and a grandson, Alex Fisher.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis with the Rev. Robert Cassidy and the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Interment was private.

Alex Fisher of Barryville, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in the Town of Lumberland as the result of an automobile accident. He was 2 years of age.
The son of Kevin Fisher and the late Ruth Wildrick, he was born September 12, 2002, in Port Jervis.
He is survived by his father, at home; a brother, Austin; his maternal grandparents, Henry and Brenda Wildrick, his paternal grandfather, David Fisher, his great-grandparents, Florence and Kenneth Thornton, and his maternal great-grandmother, Ruth Hardick, all of Port Jervis; and several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Denise Fisher and his cousin, Beatrice "Dixie" Amato.
Funeral services were held at the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis on Monday with the Rev. Robert Cassidy and Ret. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Interment was private.

The daughter of Henry and Brenda Bensley Wildrick, she was born January 30, 1980, in Newton, N.J.
She is survived by her fiance, Kevin Fisher, and a son, Austin, both at home; and her parents, a sister, Brenda Wildrick, two brothers, Henry and George Wildrick, and her paternal grandmother, Ruth Hardick, all of Port Jervis. She was predeceased by a son, Alex Fisher.

Beatrice "Dixie" Amato of Barryville, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in the Town of Lumberland as the result of an automobile accident. She was 3 years of age.
The daughter of Chuck and Erin Fisher Amato, she was born February 23, 2002, in Port Jervis.
She is survived by her parents, at home; her maternal grandfather, David Fisher of Port Jervis; her paternal grandmother, Beatrice Amato of Barryville; and her maternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Florence Thornton, and her paternal great-grandmother, Pearl Fisher, all of Port Jervis; and several aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by a cousin, Alex Fisher.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis with the Rev Robert Cassidy and the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.

Dorothy Sweeney
Ret. Lab Tech, 76

Dorothy "Dot" Sweeney of Port Jervis, a homemaker, a retired lab technician for St. Francis Hospital in Port Jervis and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the Morristown General Hospital in New Jersey. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline Mink Bott, she was born July 23, 1928, in Forestburgh.
She was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Port Jervis.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her husband of 55 years, John "Bud" Sweeney; a son and daughter-in-law. Joseph and Karen Sweeney of Matamoras, Pa.; two daughters, Ann Earley and her husband, Thomas, of Port Jervis and Tee Velasco and her friend, Howard Glantz of Taylorsville, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Colleen, Matthew, Christine, John, Brian, David, Heather and Scott; and two nephews. She also leaves behind her dog, Katie. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Bott.
Friends may call at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A vigil wake service will be held Friday afternoon with the Rev. Antony Iqnaci as the celebrant.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Port Jervis with the Rev. Antony Iqnaci officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Jervis.

Debra Rizzo
Caregiver, 45

Debra Rizzo of Barryville died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in the Town of Lumberland as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 45 years of age.
The daughter of Harold and Cordela Thompson Tilley, she was born January 31, 1960, at the Karismar Air Force Base in Turkey.
In a family statement, it was said, "Debra was a loving mother and wife, who cared for many elderly residents of Barryville."
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Nicolosi of Barryville; her parents of Many, La.; two sons, Paulie Rizzo and JoJo Rizzo, both of Barryville; four daughters, Melissa Rizzo and Jennifer Regenstreich and her husband, Brian, all of Brooklyn, and Christine and Megan, both of Barryville; two brothers, Douglas Tilley of Houston, Tex., and Kevin Tilley of Salinas, Calif., and a sister, Kim Price of San Francisco, Calif.
Services were held Monday at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville with the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Burial was made in the Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

Paul M. Oates Sr.
Ret. Machine Oper., 87

Paul M. "Poppy" Oates Sr. of Bloomingburg, a retired 30-plus years machine operator for Channel Master in Ellenville, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Horton campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Garland E. and Nannie Sinclair Oates, he was born October 14, 1917, in Kingsport, Tenn. He was the widower of Marianna "Nanny " Oates to whom he was married for 60 years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was also an ex-prisoner of war. Mr. Oates was a member of the Shawanga Mountain Post No. 4947, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Bloomingburg. He was a member of the Community Church of Bloomingburg and the Bloomingburg Fire Department Fire Police. He was also an avid sports fan.
In a family statement, it was said, "Poppy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed and always in our hearts."
He is survived by four sons, Paul Oates Jr., Roy Oates and his wife, Terry, and William Oates Sr. and his wife, Cynthia, all of Bloomingburg, and Joseph Oates and his companion, Betty, of Middletown; a sister, Opal LaFlamme of Manchester, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Theresa, Paula, Carol, Billie Marie, Tammy, Willy Kenny and Jeanie; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kelly; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Garland S. Oates.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan St., Wurtsboro on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Hewitt officiating.
Burial with military honors will be held in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.
