Robert P. Stewart
Ret. Corrections Offc., 84

Robert F. Stewart of Liberty, a retired New York State Corrections Officer at Woodbourne Correctional Facility and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at the Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 84 years of age.
The son of the late Otto and Sarah Morton Stewart, he was born March 10, 1921, in Bethel. He was the widower of Ethel L. Stewart.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Dennis Akerley Post No. 8648, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Neversink, the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty and for many years he was a driver and a bingo caller for the Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Virginia Stewart of Pine City; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Jack McAuley of Yulan, Frances Stewart of Woodridge and Susan and James DeCastro of West Islip; two sisters, Isabelle Tuttle of Livingston Manor and Rita Van Etten if Liberty; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Stewart of Neversink; six grandchildren, Robert W. Stewart, Mark McAuley, Theresa Stewart, Melanie Hansen, William DeCastro and Matthew DeCastro; three great-grandchildren, Haylie McAuley, Calob Stewart and Jack Hansen; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Stanley, Russell, Leonard and Donald Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, South Main St., Liberty, on Friday with the Rev. Linda Bohs officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, South Main St., or to the Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 105, both at Liberty, N.Y. 12754.

A memorial service for Josephine F. Green, a former resident of Woodbourne who died March 5, 2005, at the age of 92, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne.

Gertrude S. Eldred
Democrat Corresp., 85

Gertrude “Gertie” S. Eldred of Honesdale, Pa., a longtime Tyler Hill correspondent for the Sullivan County Democrat, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles and Etta Misner Sprague, she was born in Lake Huntington. She was the widow of John F. Eldred.
A graduate of the Narrowsburg High School, she later managed the luncheonette at the Wayne County Livestock Exchange for 28 years.
Mrs. Eldred was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus, Pa.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Barbara Eldred of Port Crane and Glenn and Joyce Eldred of Honesdale, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Raymond Runkle of Birdsboro, Pa.; a sister, Clara “Peg” Gehris of Lutz, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Orvis Eldred of Bethany, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Lila Sprague of Honesdale, Pa., and Eva Sprague of West Windsor; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chauncey “Buck” Sprague and William Sprague.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Damascus with Rev. Stuart Hunt of the First Baptist Church of Damascus and her grandson, Rev. Charlie Eldred, officiating.
Burial was made in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Galilee.

Mary E. Eltz
Homemaker, 94

Mary E. Eltz of Rock Hill, a former resident of Middletown, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at her home. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Hinkey McGrath, she was born March 11, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the widow of Linford B. Eltz.
Mrs. Eltz was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Middletown and of the Mulberry House Senior Center.
In a family statement, it was said, “She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her great faith and love of life is an inspiration to all of us. She will be in our hearts forever.”
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas B. and Nancy Eltz of Rock Hill and Brian J. and Gretchen Eltz of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Marylin A. and Sal Morrissey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Hazel Utter of Kingston, Helen McGrath of New York, and Alberta Perterkin of the State of Florida; eight grandchildren, Susan, Tom Jr., Joe, Keith, Corey, Erik, Brianne and Keith B.; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Brandon; and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Hurleyville Cemetery.

Winifred M. Tempel
Ret. Teacher, 94

Winifred May Tempel of Roscoe, a retired teacher of over 35 years service and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late Perry and Florence Travis Tremper she was born March 5, 1911, in Young’s Gap, Liberty. She was the widow of George John Tempel who died in 1995.
She taught in one-room schoolhouses in Goulds, Horton Brook and Callicoon Center until the Roscoe Central School became consolidated. She then taught at Roscoe Central School and retired in 1966. Mrs. Tempel later attended the State University at Oneonta, studying for her Bachelor’s degree. Upon retirement, she and her husband George, who were married for over sixty years, lived in the State of Florida. After his death, she returned to Roscoe to live.
Mrs. Tempel was a communicant of Gate of Heaven Church in Roscoe where she had been the organist for many years, and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by a son and three daughters-in law, James P. and Betty Tempel of Roscoe, Alice Banks of Roscoe and Barbara Tempel of Liberty; six grandchildren, Megan Tempel and her fiance Matthew Milner, James Temple, Toni Navarro and her husband, Jamie, Karen Hall and her husband, Gregg, Perry Banks and his wife, Pamela, and Richard Banks and his wife, Judy; 12 great-grandchildren; a niece and two nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Ferna Mealie, a son, George Perry Temple and her stepfather, Erford Bennett.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at the Gate of Heaven Church in Roscoe at a later date.
Burial will be made in the Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.

Hobart B. Jacko, 77

Hobart Buriel Jacko of Monticello, a jazz musician, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 77 years of age.
He was born April 27, 1928, in Elizabeth, N.J.
Mr. Jacko played the trumpet at many local hotels and in many cities across the U.S. He played with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker and was a member of the Musicians Union Local 802 in New York City. He was also a former Golden Gloves boxer.
He is survived by his guardians, Scott and Yvonne Warner-Einbinder of Monticello.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
A memorial service was held Tuesday evening at the Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Monticello.

Gerald Haviland, 74
Ret. NYC Transit Authority

Gerald S. Haviland of Liberty, retired from the NYC Transit Authority, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Maxwell and Pearl Briggs Slave, he was born August 30, 1930, in Pittsfield, Mass.
Mr. Haviland was retired from the Army Reserve, serving 20 years as a Master Sergeant in charge of a 105 mm Howitzer Group.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Kamiski Haviland of Liberty; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Susan Haviland of Rehobeth, Mass., and Robert and Patricia Haviland of Belair, Md.; and four grandchildren, Sarah, James, Jessica and Katie.
Services were held at the Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Liberty on Wednesday with the Rev. Richard Hewitt officiating.
Burial was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty with military honors.

Dennis C. Baim
Mechanic, 58

Dennis C. Baim of Youngsville, a self-employed mechanic at Baim’s Garage in Youngsville, and a bus driver for First Student Bus Company, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 58 years of age.
The son of Doris Joyner Baim and the late Elwood J. Baim, he was born March 19, 1947, in Liberty.
Mr. Baim was a 40-year member of the Youngsville Fire Department, a councilman for the Town of Callicoon, a member of the United Reformed Church in Youngsville, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the H. Russell Kenyon Post No. 5808, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Callicoon. He was also a member of the Neversink Rondout Antique Machinery Club.
He is survived by his wife 37 years, Linda Freer Baim, at home; his mother of Youngsville; a daughter, Cathy Baim of Lake Huntington; a son, Randy Baim of Youngsville; a brother, Richard Baim of Edmond, Okla.; two sisters, Nancy Baim Kester of Depew and Virginia Baim of Euless, Tex.; his mother-in-law, Ryllis Freer of Youngsville; an uncle, Cameron Baim of Narrowsburg; two cousins; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with the Rev. Lee Andrews officiating.
Burial was made in the Greenhill Cemetery in Youngsville.

Joseph LaBrecque
Frm. Bar/Grill Owner, 70

Joseph LaBrecque of Wurtsboro, the former owner of Barry’s Bar and Grill in Summitville, and an employee of Mamakating Construction, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at the Putnam Hospital. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph Leo and Edwinnie Meyer LaBrecque, he was born in the Bronx.
Mr. LaBrecque was a veteran of the Korean War. He was an avid fisherman and loved hunting,
He is survived by his wife, Madeline Carroll LaBrecque, at home; two sons, Joseph of Middletown and Barry of Wurtsboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Joann LaBrecque and Martin Bend of Wurtsboro; and two grandchildren, Eion Andrew Bend and Barry Gerard Bend. He was predeceased by a brother, Timm LaBrecque.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Wurtsboro with the Rev. Peter Madori officiating.
Cremation was private.

Adelle L. Wasserman
Founded Care Center, 83

Adelle L. “Dolly” Wasserman of Deerfield Beach, Fla., a former resident of Woodridge and a founder of the Alzheimer’s Day Care Center in Deerfield Beach, Fla., died Friday, May 27, 2005, in Pompano Beach, Fla., after a brief illness. She was 83 years of age.
She was born February 11, 1922, in Woodridge and lived there her entire life. She was the widow of Harry Wasserman.
In a family statement, it was said, “Our mother was a unique and very special person who will be deeply missed.”
Mrs. Wasserman is survived by four sons, Steven, Robert, Daniel, and Thomas; three daughters-in-law, Babette, Joanne and Janice; two grandchildren, Dr. Eric Wasserman and Brooke Naccarato; two great-grandchildren, Jack Kyle and Brandon James Naccarato; and her longtime companion, Victor Thompson.
Services were held Tuesday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial was made in the Workmen’s Circle #281 Cemetery in Glen Wild.

Gloria Novick
Ret. Bookkeeper, 74

Gloria Novick of Allandale, Fla., a former resident of Woodridge and a retired bookkeeper for Henry Dunay Jewelers in New York City, died Thursday, May 26, 2005 at her home in Florida. She was 74 years of age.
The daughter of the late Philip and Ann Lefkowitz, she was born July 22, 1930, in New York City. She was the widow of Jack Novick who died in 1975.
Mrs. Novick was a member of Workman Circle Branch #281.
She is survived by a daughter, Stacy Novick of Rego Park; a sister, Audrey Mark of Bellmore; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Novick of Hallandale, Fla. She was predeceased by a son, Seth Novick.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday at the Workman Circle #281 Cemetery in Glen Wild with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.

Francis Morrissey, 76

Francis “Frank” Morrissey of Loch Sheldrake died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at his home. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late William A. and Mary Garrison Morrissey, he was born August 7, 1928, in New York City.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Richard Picone of Inverness, Fla.; and his extended friends and family at New Hope Community. He was predeceased by a brother and four sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne.

Charles B. Kinne
Ret. Superintendent, 77

Charles B. Kinne of Eldred, a retired superintendent of Proctor Estate of Glen Spey and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at his home. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Herbert B. and Mildred Kinne, he was born June 10, 1927, in Glen Spey.
Mr. Kinne was a member and past assistant chief and president of the Highland Lake Fire Department; a life member and past president of the Town of Highland Lions Club; a former school board member of Eldred Central School District, and a veteran of the U. S. Merchant Marine.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine Foster Kinne, at home; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Helen and Jim Bradshaw of Grass Valley, Calif., Elizabeth and Wayne Clarke of Hopkinton, N.H., Tracey and Matthew Lukowicz of Goochland, Va., and Patricia Barnes and her companion, Adam Norris, of Highland Lake; a son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Jill Barnes of Yulan; 10 grandchildren, David Mellan and his wife, Jenny, Marissa, Devin, Derek, Morgan, Taylor, Deborah, Katie, Cameron and Kadin; and two great-grandchildren, David Patrick and Nicole.
Services were held Thursday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Rev. Mary Ellen Robeson officiating.
Burial was made in the Glen Spey Cemetery.

Thomas E. McCoy

Thomas E. “Shanghai” McCoy of Wurtsboro, a self-employed tattoo artist at Shanghai Tattoo of Wurtsboro, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at the Horton campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 50 years of age.
The son of Arlene Evans McCoy and the late Daniel McCoy, he was born August 16, 1954, in Portsmouth, Va.
He is survived by his mother of Pine Bush; two daughters Peri and her husband, Dave Singh of Middletown and Erin McCoy of Liberty; a granddaughter, Saphire Singh, at home; three brothers, William McCoy of Pine Bush, Lance McCoy and his fiancée Darlene Reddan, of Huguenot, and Daniel McCoy and his wife, Leigh, of Middletown; a sister, and brother-in-law, Margaret and Richard Cooper of Pine Bush; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday at the Quigley Funeral and Cremation Service in Rock Tavern.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Helen M. Daniels

Helen M. Daniels of Monticello, a homemaker, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Michael and Nora King Powers, she was born April 8, 1919, in Manhattan. She was the widow of Robert Daniels.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan Svehla of West Sayville and Corrine Daniels of Far Rockaway; two grandsons, Brian Svehla and his wife, Billie Jo, of Monticello, and Francis Reisert and his wife, Bobbie Jean, of Bloomingburg; and five great-grandchildren, Melissa, Jim, Mikey, Cody and Saige.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Monticello.
Interment will be made in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Monticello.

Thomas Hanlon
Ret. Model Maker, 73

Thomas O’Hare Hanlon of Hurleyville, a retired model maker for LJN Toys in New York City, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late John and Margaret O’Hare Hanlon, he was born March 5, 1932, in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
He was also an artist and an avid soccer player during his youth in Scotland.
Mr. Hanlon is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Anne Theresa and Richard Cyrgalis of Hurleyville, Margaret and Joseph Gagliardo of Liberty, Veronica and Thomas Manfredi of Kearny, N.J., and Jacqueline Hanlon of Kearny, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Rich and Pat Cyrgalis, Nick and Debbie Manfredi, Kristen Vindics and Ashley and Brittany Sansone; a great-granddaughter, Rachel Cyrgalis; his former wife, Essie Veronica Hanlon of Kearny, N.J..; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 8 a.m. on Friday at St. Peter’s Church, Broadway and Liberty Street, Monticello, with the Rev. Robert Ginel officiating.

Frances Klein, 81
Co-Owned Cosmetics Co.

Frances Klein of Delray Beach, Fla., and Rock Hill, the co-owner of Country Girl Cosmetics and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in Delray Beach. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Solomon and Bella Strusky, she was born December 17, 1923, in New York City. She was the widow of Joseph Klein who died in 1995.
Mrs. Klein was a member of Hadassah, B’nai B’rith and Crescent Hill Synagogue in Rock Hill.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen Klein and his wife, Rochelle, of New York City, and Kenneth Alan Klein of Delray, Fla. She was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello, with Cantor Michael Sturm officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Bertsel A. Price
World War II Veteran, 85

Bertsel A. “Buck” Price of Monticello, a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at his home. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late John and Anna Cantrell Price, he was born March 30, 1920, in Monticello. He was the widower of Beatrice Anna Price who died after 56 years of marriage.
Mr. Price was an Army Corporal Technician 5th Grade of World War II, serving overseas as a communications lineman under General Patton. He was an active member of the Bailey-Richman Post #9588, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Monticello.
In a family statement, it was said, “He was a loving, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to all he knew.”
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly A. and Edward Scott, two grandsons, Edward Scott and his wife, Louise, and Jason Scott and his wife, Cheryl, and five great-grandchildren, Heather, Amanda, Christina, Alli and Trevor, all of Monticello; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie (Price) and James Jackson of Virginia, and Bobbie (Price) and Donald Feller of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Rock Hill.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Burial with military honors will be held at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Jacob Bauernfeind, 91
Ret. Chemist/Nutritionist

Jacob Christopher Bauernfeind of Gainesville, Fla., a former resident of North Branch, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, in Gainesville of pneumonia and heart-related problems. He was 91 years of age.
The son of the late Edward C. and Nellie Metzger Bauernfeind, he was born April 30, 1914, in North Branch.
He attended the one-room school in North Branch, graduated from Callicoon High School in 1932 and received a BS in Agriculture and Chemistry in 1936 from Cornell University. He received his MS degree in 1939 and his PhD degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry and Physiology in 1940.
After a four-year nutrition-teaching assistantship at Cornell, he joined Hiram Walker & Sons in Illinois as a research chemist and nutritionist. In 1944, he moved to the New Jersey Research Center of Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., in Nutley, N.J., retiring 1979 and moving to Florida. Mr. Bauernfeind had published over 150 scientific papers, patents and reviews and edited three books relating to nutrition.
Mr. Bauernfeind was the recipient of several awards and was a member of various organizations including the American Society of Nutritional Sciences, the American Society of Clinical Nutrition and the American Chemical Society. He traveled widely to third world countries to work on nutrition related issues.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian Nurmi Bauernfeind of Gainesville, Fla.; a daughter, Kathleen Bauernfeind Hurwitz of Scarsdale; two sons, Michael Bauernfeind of New Milford, N.J., and Lt. Col Edmund and his wife, Donna Bauernfeind, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cox and Mabel Gloor, both of Liberty. He was predeceased by a sister, Grace B. Wagner.
A memorial service will be held on June 18 at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Fla., where he was a member.

Phyllis Cannizzo, 86
Frm. Owner of The Fern

Phyllis Cannizzo of Brooklyn, the former owner of The Fern, a former nursing home in Kenoza Lake, died at the St. Nicholas Home in Brooklyn. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Vincenzo and Ermalinda Fiorillo, she was born September 4, 1918 in New York City. She was the widow of Sal Cannizzo who died in the early 1970s.
An executive secretary in the city, she decided to try her hand at business after the death of her husband. Along with her brother Freddie, she bought The Fern on April 29, 1972, and began her life in Sullivan County, operating the home until a devastating fire destroyed her place of business. While living in Kenoza Lake, she was involved in various civic activities including the new library in Jeffersonville.
In a statement made by her nephew, it was said, “One recollection that I have of her is that she used to take food to her clients when they were in the hospital so that they wouldn’t have to eat the hospital food.”
She is survived by a son, Enzo Cannizzo; three grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law.
Following a Funeral Mass in Brooklyn, burial was made Thursday in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.

Seymour Kantrowitz
Ret. Garageman, 83

Seymour Sholom Kantrowitz of Peoria, Ariz. and a lifelong resident of Woodridge and the former owner/operator of Kantrowitz’s Garage in Woodridge, died at his home in Arizona. He was 83 years of age.
The son of the late Nathan and Bertha Goldstone Kantrowitz, he was born March 28, 1922, in Woodridge.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps before World War II and served for five years, ending his service as a crew chief for a B29 group. His garages in Woodridge and Rock Hill were, for decades, a gathering place for family and local “schmoozers” where he held forth with stories and jokes.
Mr. Kantrowitz was a past master of Fallsburg Masonic Lodge #1122, a village trustee of Woodridge, and a pillar of Congregation Ohave Sholom in Woodridge.
In a family statement, it was said, “He will be greatly missed by all.”
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Kantrowitz, at home in Peoria; two daughters, Barbara Antillon of Mexico City and Cynthia Dallas of Phoenix;, Ariz.; two sons-in-law, Armando and Kenneth; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leon Kantrowitz and Isaac Kantrowitz and his wife, Gloria, all of Woodridge, and William Kantrowitz and his wife Ruth, of New York City; a sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Len Beer of New York City; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Sunday at Congregation Ohave Sholom in Woodridge at 3 p.m., with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.
Fallsburg Masonic Lodge #1122 will hold services at 3 p.m. at Congregation Ohave Sholom.
Burial will be made in Ohave Sholom (Woodridge Synagogue) Cemetery in Glen Wild with military honors.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.
