Martin M. Herrera
Draw Bench Op., 60

Martin M. Herrera of Ellenville, a draw bench operator for Hydro and a 30-year area resident, died Tuesday, November 8, 2005 in Westchester County Medical Center. He was 60 years of age.
The son of Juliana Perez Herrera and the late Martin M. Herrera, he was born July 10, 1945 in the Dominican Republic.
He was a Communicant in the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Newburgh.
He is survived by his mother of the Bronx; his wife, Victoria Perez Herrera, at home; three daughters, Jackeline Herrera of Boston, Mass., Ellen Herrera of Liberty, and Marvia Herrera of Ellenville; five sisters, Enes and Severiana Herrera of the Bronx, and Antonina, Antonia, and Jesefina Herrera of the Dominican Republic; two brothers, Agustin Herrera of the Bronx, and Francisco Herrera of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Ellenville.
Burial was made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.
Funeral arrangements were made by Loucks Funeral Home, Inc., Ellenville.

Bernice S. Krantz
Ret. Bookkeeper, 79

Bernice S. Krantz of Callicoon, a retired bookkeeper for Kohler Lumber Company of Jeffersonville and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, November 10, 2005, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty.
The daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Schaefer Reum, she was born February 25, 1926 in Callicoon.
She is survived by her husband, Donald, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Rae and Thomas Bury of Jeffersonville, and Cindy Brezina and Andrew Brezina Jr. of Loveland, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry D. and Carole Krantz of Callicoon; six grandchildren, Timothy Bury of Helena, Mont., Bryan Bury of Queens, Michael Bury of Brooklyn, Rachel Krantz of Lehighton, Pa., Megan Brezina and Andrew Philip Brezina III of Loveland, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Emily, Sarah and Makayla Bury; a brother-in-law, Warren “Bud” Myers of Cochecton; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jan Bernice Krantz; a grandson, Joshua Krantz; and a sister, Iola Myers.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Jesse Robinson, 71
Ret. Truck Driver

Jesse “Sonny” Robinson of Monticello, a retired truck driver and entrepeneur, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at the Seelig Division of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Ben and Lucille Glass Robinson, he was born March 19, 1934 in Birmingham, Ala. He was the widower of Vernia Robinson.
He was the youngest of six sons. He enjoyed the ocean, fishing, spending time with his family, and homecooking. He loved to travel. Most of all, he enjoyed helping others. In a family statement, it was said, “He was lovable, and a great provider. He enjoyed making people laugh. He will be missed by all who knew him.”
He is survived by four daughters, Linda Robinson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Donna Jones of Liberty, Sadequa Steele and her husband, Fred, of Liberty, and Kimberly Wyatt of Queens; two sons, Ricky Huggins of Liberty, and Anthony Graham of St. Stephens, S.C.; two sisters, Betty Knox and Billie Terry, both of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jarrard Robinson, five brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. John Abraham officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty at a later date.

Douglas H. Gardner
Ret. of Verizon, 74

Douglas H. Gardner of Fishkill, a former resident of Monticello and a retired employee for Verizon, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at the Hudson Valley Nursing Home in Highland. He was 74 years of age.
The son of Herbert C. and Dorothy Horton Gardner, he was born December 6, 1930 in Monticello.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He was a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers and the Hiram Jones Hunting Club in Southwoods.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Sheeley Gardner, at home; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Paul Ruter officiating.
Burial was made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Sidney Chernoff, 95
Ret. Deputy Sheriff

Sidney Chernoff, formerly of Monticello and a retired Sullivan County deputy sheriff, died Monday, November 7, 2005 at the Earl B. Hadlow Center in Jacksonville, Fla.
He was born October 15, 1910 in Vitebsk, Russia.
Mr. Chernoff resided in several northeastern cities and had many different careers, but the one he was most proud of was his position as a Sullivan County Deputy Sheriff in Monticello.
In a family statement, it was said, “His family wishes to thank his special friend, Evelyn Quiles, for being there, providing support and comfort.”
He is survived by three daughters, Arlene Carroll and her husband, Dan of Jacksonville, Fla., Sharon Chernoff of Antelope, Calif., and Alice Benck Rickman of Brooklyn; grandchildren, Heather Roark and her husband, Tim, Brian Carroll and his wife, Natasha, and Donna Carroll, all of Jacksonville, Fla., Merissa Bookman of Warwick, R.I., and Kathy, Jacqueline, Lee, and Gabrille Rickman, and their children and grandchildren, all of Brooklyn; and great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Taylor and Timmy Roark, Brian Carroll Jr., and Breece Andradi, all of Jacksonville, Fla. He was predeceased by ex-wives, Dorothy Cohen, Rose Chernoff, and Iris Feldman, as well as a longtime companion, Shirley Bleirer; and a grandson, Eugene Rickman.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Town and Country Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Fla.

Dorothy Marie Cox
Homemaker, 79

Dorothy Marie Hogencamp Cox of White Sulphur Springs, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Friday, November 11, 2005, surrounded by her family. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Otto and Marie Bilger Hogencamp, she was born March 17, 1926. She was the widow of Donald Cox, to whom she was married 58 years.
She was a 1943 graduate of Liberty High School, and lived on the same street in White Sulphur Springs all of her life.
She was a member of the White Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, joining at the age of 12. She was communion steward for 35 years, treasurer, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the White Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens, and helped out at all local organizations.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dennis Day of White Sulphur Springs, and Darlene and Joel Goldberg of Liberty; two grandsons, Darin Day and his fiancée, Jaclyn Constant, of Cooks Falls, and Devin Day and his fiancée, Meghan Muccino, of White Sulphur Springs; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ellen Hogencamp of White Sulphur Springs; a brother-in-law, Lee Cole of Swan Lake; a nephew, Brian Hogencamp, and a niece, Debra Hogencamp Figueroa.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Burial will be made in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur.

Mary T. Eggler
Ret. Secretary, 85

Mary T. Eggler, a resident of Jeffersonville, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005, in Miami, Florida. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Francis and Frances Mitrak Bogan, she was born on September 19, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pa., and was raised on Long Island. She was the widow of Casper W. Eggler.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville, and a Past Matron of the Revonah Lincoln Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She retired from the Sullivan County Courthouse in 1985, where she had been a secretary to the late Hon. Louis Scheinman, and the Hon. Benjamin Newberg. Prior to 1972, she worked for Beck, Levy, Tegeler in Jeffersonville.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Eggler McLeod and her husband, Thomas, of Miami, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Ralph Eggler of White Sulphur Springs; five nieces, Michele Bala of Mass., Eileen Robertson of Briscoe, Dorothy Christianson of New Mexico, Joyce Teed of White Sulphur Springs, and Joann Madden of Jeffersonville; and two nephews, Jack Eggler of White Sulphur Springs, and Edwin “Butch” Chellis of Jeffersonville.
Friends may call Friday, Nov. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville with Rev. Virginia Bossley officiating.
Burial will be in the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Cemetery in Jeffersonville. Following the interment, a social hour will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville.

Louann A. Leggiere
Ret. Social Worker, 73

Louann Anita Leggiere of Palm Bay, Fla., a retired social worker, died Friday, November 11, 2005 in Palm Bay. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Arne and Anita Pederson, she was born January 14, 1932 in New York City, and grew up in Hortonville. She was the widow of Warren H. Petterson, and the widow of Thomas R. Leggiere.
She was a graduate of Hofstra University.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Ernest Petterson of Palm Bay, Fla., Charles and Marlene Petterson of Hollywood, Fla., Gary and Susan Leggiere of Palm Bay, Fla., and Richard Leggiere of Hollywood, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Pederson of Washington state; and a niece, Dolores Love and her husband, David, of Marysville, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Palm Bay, Fla.
Burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Henry Sheppard Jr., 56

Henry “Bruce” Sheppard Jr. died Saturday, November 5, 2005 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany. He was 56 years of age.
The son of Henry Sheppard Sr. and the late Sarah Brown Sheppard, he was born April 11, 1949 in Moncks Corner, S.C.
He is survived by his father of Mattpan, Mass.; five sisters, Sarah Bennett of Monticello, Betty Stevens of Moncks Corners, S.C., Henritta Montgomery and Gloria Sheppard of Mass., and Kathleen Sharque of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two brothers, Samuel Jacob Warren of St. Steven, S.C., and Lawrence Sheppard of Mass.; two aunts, Mary S. Brown and Rebecca Liu Yung; two nieces, Larissa and Latoya Bennett; a nephew, Benjamin Bennett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church in Monticello with the Rev. James Matthews officiating.
Burial will be made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello at the convenience of the family.
Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home in Monticello.

Lillian Bauernfeind
Retired Nurse, 93

Lillian Nurmi Bauernfeind of Gainesville, Fla. died Sunday, November 6, 2005 in Gainesville. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of Finnish parents Emil and Rosa Nurmi, she was born on August 9, 1912. She was the widow of Jacob Christopher Bauernfeind, who died May 18, 2005.
She was a registered nurse until her retirement, training at the Cleveland City Hospital and serving over the years at various hospitals in Ohio, New York and New Jersey. She was also employed as a private duty nurse.
She was active in many church and community programs. In Gainesville, she was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Her lifelong hobbies were gardening and swimming.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Bauernfeind Hurwitz of Scarsdale; two sons, Michael Bauernfeind of New Milford, N.J. and Lt. Col. Edmund Bauernfeind and his wife, Donna, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Marc, David, Kristen, Jason, Erik, and Marshall; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cox of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews, as well as many relatives in Finland. She was predeceased by two brothers, Carl Nurmi of Elmira, and Rudolph Nurmi of Spencer; two sisters, Gerta Nurmi Wright of Vergennes, Vt., and Marta Nurmi Mirabella of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be held in Gainesville, Fla. on December 10.

William B. Hill
Store Clerk, 65

William B. Hill of Fort Montgomery, a store clerk for the Post Exchange at West Point, died Tuesday, November 10, 2005 at Friedwald Center in New City. He was 65 years of age.
The son of William B. and Clara Anderson Hill Sr., he was born February 25, 1940 in Newburgh.
He was a member of Highland Engine Co. #1 in Cornwall.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Frank Summers of Brooklyn; a stepmother, Angie Hill of Forestburgh; a stepbrother, Bill Sipos of Monticello; a niece, Sandy D’Allsandro; a nephew, Frank Hall; his fiancée, Marion G. Lake of Fort Montgomery; and three grandchildren, Sharina, Tyleke, and Kareem Summers.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Quigley Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Jessie E. Murabito
Nurses Aide, 67

Jessie E. Murabito of Goshen, a nurses aide for Orange County Home and Infirmary in Goshen and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at home. She was 67 years of age.
The daughter of Frank and Williametta Braffett Miller, she was born April 5, 1938 in Goshen.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Goshen, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Unit 377 of Goshen.
She is survived by her husband, Salvatore V., at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Salvatore V. and Michele Murabito Jr. of Florida; a daughter and son-in-law, Jessie E. and Ronnie Smykla of Middletown; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline McCloud of Bloomingburg; a brother, Norman Miller of Middletown; five granchildren, Niclolas, Kayla, and Ronnie Jr., Jacqueline, and Ricky; and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Crystal. She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Miller, and three grandsons, Edward, Vincent, and Adam.
Burial was made in St. John’s Cemetery in Goshen.

Janice Robinson

Janice Sue Robinson, a 35-year resident of Evensville, Tenn. and formerly of Jeffersonville, died Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Rhea Medical Center in Evensville, Tenn.
She was the daughter of the late Henry Phillip and Edith Dorothy Schwatz Schaefer.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Robinson, at home; her stepmother, Helen Betty Schaefer of New York; a daughter, Linda Diane Cray of Knoxsville, Tenn.; three sons, David Robinson of Atlanta, Ga., Stephen Litwin and Erik Brandon Robinson, both of Evensville, Tenn.; a sister, Marlene Worden and a brother, Dennis Lee Schaefer, both of New York; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the residence of Steve and Freda Litwin in Evensville, Tenn. with Father James Vick officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Coulter Garrison Funeral Home, Inc. in Dayton, Tenn.

Helen Owen
Ret. Secretary, 94

Helen Owen, a lifelong resident of Bloomingburg and a retired secretary for an insurance agency, died Saturday, November 12, 2005 at St. Teresa’s Nursing Home in Middletown. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late Clinton and Minnie L. Benson Van Houten, she was born September 12, 1911 in Totowa, N.J. She was the widow of Russell Owen.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the DeWitt Funeral Home, 64 Center St., Pine Bush with the Rev. Robert Hewitt officiating.
Burial will be made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

Singne Amback, 86

Singne E. Amback of Denver, N.C., a former resident of Callicoon Center, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville, N.C. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Anna Holm Ahnstrom, she was born May 15, 1919 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of John Amback, who died in 1973.
She graduated from Delhi Ag & Tech College in Delhi. She worked at Jeffersonville Central School for 12 years, and Yaun Company in Liberty. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Fraüen Verein, both of North Branch. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Jeffersonville and Cornell Cooperative Extension for many years. A former 4-H leader, she was a member of the Willing Workers of Callicoon Center, and a charter member of the Catskill Mountain Doll Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Thomas Miersch of Denver, N.C.; two grandsons, John Miersch, and Michael Miersch and his wife, Stephanie, all of N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Taryn Miersch, Asher Miersch, Brieana McFarlane, and Chassy McFarlane, all of N.C.; several nieces and nephews, including Linda, Glenn, Ed, and Paul Ahmstrom, all of Jeffersonville; Beverly Hesse and her husband, Joe, of Roscoe; Roy Amback and his wife, Ellen, of Livingston Manor; several grandnieces and grandnephews, including Jason and Michael Ahnstrom; a brother-in-law, James Amback and his wife, Versa, of Roscoe; and many friends at Bethel United Methodist Church in Denver, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at a future date to be announced.
Burial will be made in the Callicoon Center Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
