Leonard Walling
Ret’d. Ship’s Capt., 93

Leonard Walling of Ellenville, a retired ship’s captain for the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation, died Monday, November 28, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He was 93 years of age.
The son of Joseph and Floretta Moebos Walling, he was born January 20, 1912 in Brooklyn.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was an avid boater and a past commander of the Captree Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He taught safe boating for both organizations as well as the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Upon his retirement, he relocated to Ellenville and owned and operated a campground and drove a bus for Josephine Rampe.
In a family statement, it was said, “He lived to help others and although he was out of his element for the last few years, those who had the opportunity to know him, sit and talk with him, or just be in his presence, will never forget ‘Lenny.’”
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard V. and Patricia Walling, and Donald E. and Celesta Walling; three daughters, Doris B. Chervenie, Christine Lake and her husband Michael, Evelyn Kaczmarek and her husband Richard; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Keith, Scott, David, Timothy, and Todd; and several great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on friday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Burial will be made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Patrick J. Doyle
Kitchen Worker, 78

Patrick Joseph Doyle of Woodridge, formerly of Spring Glen and a kitchen worker at the Homowack Lodge, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at his home. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late Patrick and Bridget Rudden Doyle, he was born December 19, 1926 in County Longford, Ireland.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea from 1951-53. He attended St. Mary and St. Andrew Church in Ellenville and St. Joseph’s Church in Wurtsboro.
He is survived by several friends in the area, including the Arango family in Spring Glen.
Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan St., Wurtsboro.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph’s Church in Wurtsboro with Rev. Peter Madori officiating.
Burial with military honors will be held in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Dorothy Carradine
Retired Nurse, 89

Dorothy Carradine of Monticello, a retired nurse, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at the Seelig Division of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late George D. and Laura Simmons Hawkins, she was born January 22, 1916 in England. She was the widow of Henry G. Carradine.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Ed McManus of Monticello; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Hetty McCollum of Wales; six grandchildren, Julie, Susanne, Kim, Craig, Dean, and Luann; four great-grandchildren, Casey, Hailey, Julia, and Lukas. She was predeceased by a daughter, Julia Jones; a brother, Fred Hawkins; and a sister, Kathleen Hawkins.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway, Monticello.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Henryk Mituniewicz
Ret’d. Auto Mechanic, 80

Henryk Mituniewicz of Monticello, a retired auto mechanic from New York City, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Waclaw and Maria Mituniewicz, he was born July 1925 in Poland.
He is survived by his wife Helena Chmiel Mituniewicz, at home; and several friends in the area.

John Davis
Ret’d. Installer, 89

John Davis of Newburgh, a retired installer for Ira D. Conklin, Inc. and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at the Newburgh campus of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. He was 89 years of age.
The son of the late John and Ellen Lyons Davis, he was born September 8, 1916 in Newburgh. He was the widower of Margaret Busby Davis who died July 16, 1995.
He is survived by a grandson, John Davis of Newburgh; a granddaughter, Lisa Weronick and her husband, Douglas, of Spring Glen; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Venuti of Wurtsboro; two sisters, Minnie Barnett of Texas, and Nettie Robinson of Tillson; a lifelong friend, Ethel Watkins; two great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Peter Davis; two brothers, David and Steve Davis; and a sister, Ellen Vitek.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 N. Plank Rd., Newburgh.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Hazel Smith, 93
Ret’d. Store Owner

Hazel Smith, formerly of Port Jervis, and the retired owner of Smith Notions Store in Port Jervis, died Friday, November 11, 2005 at Penick Village Nursing Home in Southern Pines, N.C. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late George and Jessie White, she was born August 22, 1912 in Glen Spey. She was the widow of Louis F. Smith.
Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church of Port Jervis, St. Peter’s R.C. Church on Capital Hill in Washington, D.C., and the Clara Bradley Lodge.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Richard Lewis of Houston, Tex., Eileen and Marvin Leto of Southern Pines, N.C., and Patricia and Arthur Hanrehan of Washington, D.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Louis Jr. and Karen Smith of Houston, Tex.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Agnes Bodens of Narrowsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Marie T. Cortese
Homemaker, 94

Marie Teresa Cortese of Narrowsburg, a homemaker and a longtime resident of the area, died Thursday, November 24, 2005 in Port Orange, Fla. She was 94 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Elizabeth D’Agustino Monaco, she was born May 30, 1911 in New York City. She was the widower of Vincent Cortese Sr.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church of Narrowsburg.
In a family statement, it was said, “She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed. She was a big part of our lives. She will live on in our hearts forever.”
She is survived by a daughter, Marguerite Schroeder of Brooklyn; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Delia Cortese; a son, Vincent Cortese Jr.; and two brothers, Nicholas and Joseph Monaco.
Friends may call on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church in Narrowsburg with Rev. William Scully, O.F.M. officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Frederick Raute, 79
Tree Service Wkr.

Frederick “Freddie Tree” Raute of Wurtsboro, a tree service worker, died Saturday, November 26, 2005 at his home. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late Fred and Bertha Gesbrecht Raute, he was born April 27, 1926 in Hillsdale, N.J. He was the widower of Elaine Coles Raute.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy during the reconstruction of Pearl Harbor. He wrote poetry, and was widely known for his witty character.
He is survived by two daughters, Denice Gates of Cochecton, and Donna and Robert Wragge Jr. of Newborn, Ga.; a sister, Caroline Kleister of Mount Hope; two grandchildren, Robert Wragge Sr. of Port Jervis, and Larry R. McInturff of Clarksville, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony Wragge and T.J. McInturff. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Raute.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro with Rev. Robert Schwander officiating.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Frances I. Stewart
Worker at ARC, 51

Frances I. Stewart of Woodridge, an employee at the shelter workshop of the Sullivan ARC in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at home. She was 51 years of age.
The daughter of the late Robert P. and Ethel I. Husch Stewart, she was born October 1, 1954 in Liberty.
She is survived by two sisters, Linda McAuley and her husband, Jack, of Yulan, and Susan De Castro and her husband, James, of West Islip; a brother, Paul Stewart and his wife, Virginia, of Pine City; two aunts, Isabelle Tuttle of Livingston Manor, and Rita Van Etten of Liberty; an uncle, Richard Stewart of Neversink; two nieces, Melanie Hansen and her husband, Eric, and Theresa Stewart; four nephews, Robert Stewart and his wife, Lisa, Mark McAuley, William De Castro, and Matthew De Castro; a grandniece, Haylie McAuley; three grandnephews, Jack Hansen, Calob Stewart, and Riley Stewart; and the staff and residents of the Greenfield Home in Woodridge.
Friends may call Friday at the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley in Liberty from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Linda Bohs officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Sunset Lake Road, Liberty.
