LAKE HUNTINGTON — January 25, 2005 – Powered by five first half three-pointers and a stingy defense which didn’t give up a field goal in the second quarter, John S. Burke Catholic defeated the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs 45-17 Tuesday night in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Assn. Division IV game.
Burke Coach Bob Turner said, “I thought it was a combination of tough defense and Sullivan West not being as aggressive as they normally are.
“I knew they were going to try and stop Jaimie [McFarlin],” he said. “We passed the ball out and that opened things up for us.”
The Burke Eagles jumped out a 6-0 lead midway through the first period before Autumn Darder canned two short jumpers to make it 6-4.
That was as close as Sullivan West would come to taking the lead.
Burke then took control of the game, outscoring Sullivan West 17-4, to take a commanding 23-8 lead into the lockerroom.
Emily Stallings led Burke with 11 points, while Nicole Pena added nine and McFarlin ended up with eight points. Burke is now 3-0 league, 12-1 overall. April Ackermann led the Lady Bulldogs (8-2, 2-1 OCIAA) with six points.
Bulldogs play Liberty tonight in Liberty at 7 p.m. in a Division IV game.
