Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week’s tip will help bowlers to finish their shot in the best possible position to ensure the best results (proper roll on the ball and accuracy.)
First, let me review some things I have covered in the past: (1) the ball must be under the shoulder, (2) you must roll the ball, not throw it, (3) timing must be correct – not early, not late.
Here’s the tip: Do not allow the shoulder of your bowling arm to come forward as you are releasing the ball. It must stay back as the arm swings through and the ball rolls off the hand.
If your shoulder comes forward during the release, you are in effect throwing the ball and this will result in early timing. Your head and upper body should be still as your arm swings through. The more moving body parts, the less chance you have of being accurate and making a good shot.
Mike Luongo is technically certified through IBPSIA and is a Silver Level Coach with USA Bowling. He is also the Northeast Technical Advisor for the Morich Bowling Ball Company (Morich Enterprises, Inc.) and a member of the Brunswick Pro Staff. If you have a question or subject you would like covered, he can be reached at 341-1694 or via e-mail at mikespro@warwick.net.

The PBA Tour
Tarrytown, New York’s Patrick Allen certainly knew how to put the exclamation point on an already successful year.
The lefty claimed his third title of the 2004-2005 season – and his first career major – when he defeated the surprising Chris Loschetter, a 24-year-old non-exempt PBA member, on Sunday afternoon in the title match of the 2005 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Denny’s World Championship. Allen beat Loschetter 235-210 in the championship match held at Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Allen, who captured the $120,000 top prize and a four-year Tour exemption, struck and converted a 7-pin in his first two frames before striking on his next six shots. Loschetter struck on his first three shots before converting three straight single-pin conversions, which put him behind for good.
The victory puts Allen in the middle of the PBA Player of the Year Race. He captured the 2004-2005 PBA World Point Rankings title this week and also leads the PBA Tour with $344,740 in season earnings, which is the second-highest mark in history.
“I don’t think anything has really hit me yet,” said Allen, who also finished second in the first two major events on the PBA Tour this season. “I was just trying to throw the best shots I could and I got some breaks.”
Allen advanced to the title match by striking 11 times to defeat two-time title winner Mike Scroggins, 279-198, in their semifinal showdown. Scroggins, a resident of Amarillo, Texas, opened in frames 3 and 4 to open the door for Allen.
In the first semifinal match, Loschetter defeated Brian Voss of Alpharetta, Ga., 231-165. Loschetter, a second-year pro, stuck in frames 3 through 8, while PBA Hall of Famer Voss suffered through five open frames.
Loschetter took home $50,000 for his second place finish, while Voss and Scroggins tied for third and won $20,000 apiece.
The PBA Tour concludes its regular season this weekend with the 2005 PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions at Mohegan Sun Arena. The final rounds will be televised live on ESPN at 1 p.m. this Sunday, April 10.
