CALLICOON May 9, 2006 The new Section IX girls golf record for the lowest score in a nine-hole round did not last very long.
Just six days after Sullivan Wests Melanie Kleiner set the new record of 36, the mark was broken by Kleiner herself.
On Wednesday, May 3, Kleiner, a freshman on the Lady Bulldogs golf team, scored an even-par 35 on the front nine at the Villa Roma County Club in Callicoon during a non-league match against John S. Burke Catholic High School.
Nearly a week earlier, on Thursday, April 27, Kleiner fired a 1-over-par 36 on the Villa Roma course in a non-league match versus New Paltz. Kleiners 36 replaced the old record of 38, which was held by Ashley Zambito of Newburgh.
As for the match with Burke, Kleiners record-setting 35 led the Lady Bulldogs to victory. Teammates Kate Fanning and Lauren Ellison added a 50 and 52, respectively, as SW posted a 137-157 win over the Lady Eagles.
With the victory, SW improved its record to 6-0 on the season.
