MONGAUP VALLEY June 27, 2006 In Thursdays nights Eastern Sullivan Firefighters Softball League (ESFSL) game between Smallwood/Mongaup Valley FD and Monticello FD, the volunteer firefighters from the SMVFD defeated MFD by a final score of 17-0.
In the wake of a scoreless first frame, SMVFD went on a batting rampage. The squad scored 10 runs in the second, two in the third, three in the third and a couple of more runs in the sixth.
Dennis Dietrich, SMVFDs veteran ace on the mound, pitched a one -hitter. Dietrich helped his own cause by going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Joe Bonnaci went 2-for-4 swatted a two-run homer.
MFD pitcher Brian Gregory got tagged with the loss.
Keith Kurthy, captain of MFD (1-4), summed up the game and the weather.
It was a hot one, but we just come out here to have a lot of fun, he said. The guys come out here and do their best. Thats all you can ask.
Tim Morey, captain of SMVFD (2-0), said, We played pretty good as this was only our second game.
Morey went 4-for-5 with a two singles, a double and a triple.
Also keying the SMVFD offense were Shannon Dietrich and Des Gonzalez. Both were 4-for-5 and Gonzalez scored four runs.
