FREMONT CENTER July 18, 2006 The Matthews on Main softball team racked up another tournament win this weekend at the Fremont Center softball field.
Matthews defeated Ronnies Ringers, 10-9, in the championship game of a benefit tournament for Lenny Merit.
But Ronnies Ringers didnt give up without a fight.
With a score of 2-2 in the bottom of the first, the game promised to be a close one.
Matthews shed some doubt on this, however, after they scored a whopping eight runs in the top of the second inning.
Unlike many of the other games that Matthews has played this summer, the run-fest stopped after the second inning.
George Muller, playing for Ronnies, scored a run in the bottom of the third. Despite this, things were looking bleak for Ronnies.
Until the bottom of the fifth, anyway. In that frame, Ronnies cut the Matthews lead from 10-3 to 10-7.
In Sunday afternoons blistering heat, Ronnies decided to turn the temperature up just a little bit more in the bottom of the seventh by scoring two more runs.
If the Matthews on Main players werent sweating enough, Ronnies had the bases loaded and seemed ready to take on the world.
With two outs, however, their streak was cut short when Paul Schwatzs fly ball landed nicely in the mitt of a Matthews outfielder.
With this, Matthews escaped with a one-run victory.
