Fire Department Tourney

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS August 15, 2006 The White Sulphur Springs Fire Department sponsored a mens open modified softball tournament this past weekend.
Nine area teams played in the event, which was held at Gary A. Bradley Field at the White Sulphur Springs FD Park and at Swan Lake Fire Departments Max Eronimous Field.
Those teams included: American Electric, Darder Stone, JBs, Lorados, Matthews on Main, Mullallys Pub, Ronnys Ringers, Stone Arch Inn and Sutphen East.
This double-elimination tournament started 8 a.m. on Saturday and concluded late afternoon on Sunday.
WSSFD awarded trophies to the top three teams in the tournament and the Most Valuable Player (MVP). By winning all of its games, Stone Arch Inn earned the first place trophy. Ronnys Ringers captured the second place trophy and Matthews on Main came in third place.
Several teams were eliminated on Saturday. On Sunday, Matthews on Main played in the losers bracket all day.
Stone Arch Inn defeated Ronnys Ringers, 20-6, to give Ronnys Ringers its first loss of the weekend.
Ronnys Ringers then played Matthews on Main to see which team would advance to the championship game versus Stone Arch Inn. Ronnys Ringers topped Matthews on Main, 14-12.
In the title game, Stone Arch Inn beat Ronnys Ringers by a score of 14-8.
The tournament MVP was Rob Hubert, who played shortstop for the Stone Arch Inn team. He had a batting average of over .700 for the weekend and committed no errors. In addition, he blasted a three-run homer in the in the championship game.
WSSFD members Mike Black and Matt DeWitt helped keep the scorebooks and configure the tournament. They helped several other WSSFD members prepare the chicken barbecue that was held in conjunction with the event.
As the tournament concluded, the WSSFD members thanked the umpires for donating their time as well the Swan Lake FD members for the use of their field. Black, DeWitt and their fellow firefighters also thanked all of the players for coming out and supporting the department. They also said they are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year.
