Liberty United
Under-9 Soccer Team Wins Title

By Ted Waddell
LIBERTY — November 21, 2006 — On Sunday afternoon, the Liberty United Soccer Club’s Under-9 team defeated the Warwick Falcons, 6-3, for the 2006 Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association championship.
The teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the first half. But in the second 25-minute stanza, the home team scored three unanswered goals to win.
Liberty United (8-2) is coached by Jairo Hernandez. Warwick (1-2-5) is coached by James Power.
Liberty’s Romero Gustavo scored four goals, while Jose Ferrufino and Shaun Jackson had one goal each.
For Warwick, Nicholas Parchinski recorded two goals and Eric Ormsby scored on a penalty kick.
Carpio Ramos, who is the Assistant Coach of the Liberty Central School’s boys’ varsity soccer team, started the Liberty United Soccer Club three years ago as a way of getting local kids involved in the sport at a younger age.
Ramos and his fellow Liberty United coaches hope that by getting Sullivan County boys and girls involved with soccer at a younger age, they will one day help the local high school teams be more competitive with their Orange County counterparts. Many school districts in Orange County have long been known for having strong soccer programs.
For more information about Liberty United Soccer Club, which will soon be starting its indoor season and will also have teams next spring for boys and girls ages 9 to 19, please call Ramos at 292-0810.
