CALLICOON December 1, 2006 Just before the 2006 firearm deer hunting season enters its final week, there is a new leader in the Democrat’s 33rd annual Big Buck Contest.
Christopher Wood of Equinunk, Pa. shot an 8-pointer this past Monday, November 27, which was the first day of the deer hunting season in The Keystone State. Wood took his buck, which totaled 74 1/4 in the Democrat scoring system, while hunting in Buckingham Township in northern Wayne County, Pa.
The buck’s two antlers measured 23 1/2 inches and 22 1/4 inches, respectively, while the spread from the outside of one antler to outside of the other antler at the widest point was 20 1/2 inches.
Wood said he took the buck from about 50 yards away.
Currently in second place is Steven Casella of Rhode Island.
On November 18, which was the opening day of the season here in Sullivan County and throughout the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Southern Zone, Casella shot a 10-pointer near Narrowsburg.
The buck scored 71 in the Democrat measuring system.
