Helen E. Stephenson, a longtime resident of Bethel, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at her home. She was 64.
The daughter of John and Ethel Dotten Groenhoff, she was born on August 31, 1943 in the Bronx.
Helen was a department manager at Wal-Mart in Monticello.
A family statement reads, “Helen was a loving wife, mother and adoring grandmother and will be missed by all.”
Survivors include her mother, Ethel Dotten of Liberty; her husband, Jesse Stephenson at home; one son, Robert Muller and his wife, Darlene of Liberty; three daughters, Deborah Somers and her husband, Walter of Liberty, Lisa Palmer and her husband, Clarence of Grahamsville and Karoline Parks and her husband, Michael of White Sulphur Springs; three stepchildren, David Stephenson of Monticello, Terrie Stephenson of Liberty and Keith Stephenson of Rock Hill; a brother, Gary Dotten of Liberty; two sisters, Ann Smyth of Kingston and Elizabeth Groenhoff of Ferndale; seven grandchildren, Trina Vinnek, Helena Chico, Mallory Ruiz, Patrick Somers Jr., Thomas Muller, Jared Palmer and Grady Parks; one great-grandchild, Logan Gleitz; and several nieces and nephews; also by her ever faithful canine companion, Samantha.
Friends may call at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty on Tuesday, October 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 17 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Burial will be made in Laurel Hill Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

Norman Kornblith
Ret. Salesman, 85
Norman Kornblith of Garnerville, a retired salesman in the garment district in New York City, died on October 12, 2007 at home in Garnerville. He was 85.
Norman was born in Brooklyn June 22, 1922, the son of William and Sylvia Levine Kornblith.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a sergeant in WW II.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 35 years, Rissa Charnow Kornblith of Wood-ridge; sons, Wade and wife, Bonnie Kornblith, Dr. Howard K. Newhouse and wife, Michelle, and his daughter, Hayley and her husband, James Vasquez.
Funeral Services were held Sunday, October 14 in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc., Monticello. Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiated.
Burial was made in the Workman Circle Branch, #281 Cemetery, Glen Wild.
The family received friends at the Kornblith residence immediately following services Sunday, October 14 and will be sitting Shiva from Monday thru Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and 4 - 8 p.m.

College Professor, 68
Jay Kinsbruner of Miami Beach, Fla., Professor Emeritus of Latin American History, Queens College, CUNY, author of several works on Spanish America including The Spanish American Independence Movement, Not of Pure Blood and Petty Capitalism in Spanish America, died October 6, 2007 in Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Fla. He was 68.
At the time of his death, he was the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture.
The loving son of Florence Reitman Kinsbruner and the late Mac Kinsbruner; the beloved husband of Karen; adored father of Jennifer (Jeff) and Mieca; cherished brother of Mickey Kinsbruner (Donna) and sister, Susan Pashkow (Paul); brothers-in-law, Dr. Tommy Hillman (Nosrat) and Sam Hillman (Joy); son-in-law of Lila Hillman; nephew, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be missed terribly.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 8, at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Monticello.
Burial was made in the Hurleyville Synagogue Cemetery, Hurleyville.

Kristine Ann Markarin of Woodbourne, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at home. She was 29.
The daughter of Peter Conti and Eugenia Morseman Hultz, she was born May 26, 1978 in Brooklyn.
Kris attended Fallsburg Central School and graduated in 1996. She met the love of her life, Greg Markarin and they were married in Fallsburg. She spoke four different languages which included Italian, Spanish, Armenian and English. She was also a computer wiz and loved cooking. She was the best “Mom” and liked fishing, antique cars, and antiquing.
Kris leaves behind her loving husband of 12 years, Greg, at home; two sons, Gregory Jr. and Alexander also at home; her mother, Jeannie Hultz, and her husband, Tom of Woodbourne; her father, Peter Conti and his companion, Mary of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Peter Jr. and his wife, Teresa of Arizona and John T. and his companion, Cindy Haad of Pennsylvania; one sister, Geraldine Gorton and her husband, Keith of Grahamsville; mother-in-law, Virginia Markarin; and brother-in-law, Jeff Markarin both of Glen Wild; paternal grandparents, Frank and Grace Conti of Pennsylvania; two nieces, two nephews, many friends and cousins.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Cremation will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Winifred E. Hylas of Forestburgh died Saturday, October 13, 2007. She was 79.
Born in Congers on December 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Marguarite (Feron) Liska.
Winifred is survived by her husband, Michael Hylas of Forestburgh; her sons, Michael (Kathi) Hylas of Port Jervis, Jamie (Diane) Hylas of Osterville, Mass., Mark (Maureen) Hylas of Sparrow Bush, Jennifer (Herman) Seidel of Forestburgh and Alexander (Christine) Hylas of Pine Bush; grandchildren, Maggie Seidel, Mark Hylas, Johanna Seidel and Connor Hylas; also survived many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 18 at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Paul in Congers.

Joseph E. Hendershot Sr. of Port Jervis, a resident of the area for most of his life, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 66 years of age.
The son of the late Peter and the late Anna G. Clock Hendershot, he was born August 3, 1941 in Lookout, Pa.
Joseph was formerly a farmer, and he last worked at C & D Power Systems in Huguenot.
A family statement reads, “Joe was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He leaves behind many friends.”
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara J. Bales Hendershot, at home; five sons, Joseph E. Hendershot Jr. and his companion, Tina; Leonard C. “Buddy” Hendershot and his wife, Margaret, all of Port Jervis; Gary C. Hendershot Smolma of Monticello; Lee E. Hendershot and his wife, Crystal; and Jerry M. Hendershot and his wife, Diane, all of Huguenot; three daughters, Laura May Taylor and her husband, Shane, Sarah Jean Hendershot, and her friend, Henry; and Tammy Lee Taylor and her husband, Monty, all of Port Jervis; brother, Calvin “Pete” Hendershot of Sussex, N.J.; sister, Betty L. Crowell of West Va.; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Herbert and Henry Hendershot; and a sister, Eleanor Smith.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 13 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port Jervis with the Rev. Ann Rost officiating.
Burial will be made in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush.

Margaret J. Fuller of Round Lake, a homemaker, and formerly of Liberty, died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at her home. She was 88.
The daughter of the late John and Delia P. Young Wilson, she was born September 9, 1919 in Liberty.
Survivors include her daughter, Dixie Lee Sacks of Round Lake; two grandsons, Steven Sacks and his fiancee Darlene Zacharuchuk, and Roger Specht and his wife, Terry, of Jeffersonville; one granddaughter, Diana Garland and her husband, Anthony, of Round Lake; three great-grandsons, Anthony Garland III (TJ) of Round Lake, Justin Ummel Sacks of Palm Springs, Ca., and Henry Specht of Jeffersonville.
She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Melvin D. Fuller; and a brother, George Wilson.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the Liberty Cemetery, Cold Spring Road, Liberty, on Thursday, October 18. The Rev. Donald Latham will officiate.

Mary Oestrich
Homemaker, 98
Mary Oestrich, a life long resident of Fernwood (Long Eddy), passed away peacefully on October 9, 2007 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris (SNU Unit). She was 98 and 7 months of age.
Born March 16, 1909 in Rock Valley, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ida Bertha Tinklepaugh Emerich.
Mary was a homemaker until she and her late husband began Walt’s T.V. Sales & Service in Callicoon where she worked side by side with Walter in the early days of local television.
Mary was a member of the Rock Valley Church, as well as a member and organist of the Hankins Methodist Church for many years.
Mary and Walter had been married for 60 years on June 6, 1988 when on June 8, 1988, Walter had a fatal tractor accident on their farm which was very devastating to the family and the community.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Ethel Miller and her husband, Walter John Miller, of Jeffersonville and Alice Hadley Fredo and her husband, Pat Fredo, of Fremont Center; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Lindberg of Fernwood and Mabel Oestrich of Long Island; three sons-in-law, Walter J. Miller of Jeffersonville, Theodore Kutschera of Callicoon and Pat Fredo of Fremont Center; fourteen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four daughters, Eleanor Clark of Freeport, Fla., Phyllis Schaefer of Jeffersonville, Irene Oestrich of Fernwood, Linda Kutschera of Callicoon; three sons-in-law, Clarence Schaefer, Walter Clark, and Robert Hadley; one grandson, Gary Clark of Tennessee; two brothers, Emmett Emerich of Hancock and Fred Emerich of Deposit; and five sisters, Jennie Peterson of Spokane, Wash., Thelma Hubbard of Otego, Inez Murdock of Syracuse, and Elizabeth Goebel and Emily Staples, both of Rock Valley.
Services were held at the Stewart Murphy Funeral Home on Saturday, October 13. The Reverend Dennis Ubertini officiated.
Burial was made in the Rock Valley Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Heavy Equipment Operator, 52
Philip H. “Bubba” Goodell Jr. of Hasbrouck, a heavy equipment operator, died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at home after a long illness. He was 52.
The son of the late Philip and Marie LeMire Goodell, he was born on September 29, 1955 in Lawrence, Mass.
He was a member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. He loved riding in the wind with family and friends on his Harleys, as well as hunting, fishing and hitting golf balls with his grandson and attending motorcycle swap meets and shows with his best bud, Rick Newman.
He is survived by five sisters, Anne Greenwood and her husband Dave of Haverhill, Mass., Ida Newman and her husband Rick of Loch Sheldrake, Brenda Rogers and her husband Rick of Powder Springs, Ga., Valerie Courbron of Savannah, Ga. and Paula Karangelen and her husband Jeff of Santee, S.C.; one brother, Kevin Goodell and his wife Samantha of Caledonia, Canada; a stepsister, Pamela Navase of Manchester, N.H.; three nieces, Samantha Osterout, Robyn Rogers and Megan Goodell; four nephews, Robert Andersen, David Rogers, Noah and Joseph Goodell; his daughter-in-law Tonya and her husband Josh Lyons of Swan Lake; and five grandchildren, Dylan, Tiffany and Joshua Turk, Devlynn Chapman and Arianna Hatt.
He was predeceased by his brother, Edmund.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne.
A celebration of Philip’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Those who knew him are invited to ride in the wind to the services in his memory.
Cremation will be at the convenience of the family.
