County plans to charge businesses waste fee by volume

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Businesses across Sullivan County will be charged the new solid waste user fee based on how much trash they create.
The commercial fee differs slightly from the residential user fee, though both will be put on property tax bills in January.
For residential properties, the fee will be solely based on the specific property’s use (i.e., single-family home, apartment, bungalow, etc.).
For businesses, the fee will be tied to annual volume. That volume, however, will not be directly measured – it will be estimated based on the county’s understanding of the business’ use of its property.
• Low volume (less than 2 tons per 2,000 square feet of gross floor area) – $350
• Moderate volume (between 2.01 and 3 tons per 2,000 square feet of gross floor area) – $450
• High volume (between 3.01 and 6 tons per 2,000 square feet of gross floor area) – $650
• Very high volume (more than 6 tons per 2,000 square feet of gross floor area) – $850.
